Owen Davies Joins GlobalWelsh as Placemaking Associate
This new appointment formalises an already successful collaboration between Owen and GlobalWelsh and strengthens the organisation's place-based strategies and regional development efforts across Wales.
Owen Davies will take on this role alongside leading his consultancy practice, Owen Davies Consulting. Through this dual role, Owen will provide strategic advice and support to GlobalWelsh's local and regional initiatives while remaining active in his ongoing consultancy work with towns, cities, and local authorities across the UK.
Owen, a Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) and Fellow of the Institute of Place Management (FIPM), has more than 30 years' experience in placemaking, masterplanning, and regeneration. He is the founder of Owen Davies Consulting and Gwagle, a shared workspace in Abergavenny. His consultancy has supported more than 80 towns and cities, and he has served on the UK Government's High Street Task Force Experts Panel and the Welsh Government's Transforming Towns Ministerial Task Group. He also led the delivery of Wrexham's successful City Status bid and its City Centre Placemaking Plan.
This appointment marks a significant step in the ongoing partnership between Owen Davies Consulting and GlobalWelsh, who have already collaborated on innovative place-based diaspora engagement projects in regions across Wales, including Blaenau Gwent. By formalising the relationship, the two organisations aim to further strengthen GlobalWelsh's approach to inward investment, localised diaspora engagement, and place-based economic development.

In this new role, Owen will also act as a public sector advisor and ambassador for GlobalWelsh's work with councils, regions, and government partners.
Owen's broader experience includes heritage restoration as Chair of the Plas Gunter Mansion Trust, and he is also a committed cyclist, British Cycling qualified coach and advocate for local cycling initiatives.
He said:
'The Welsh diaspora—people who've left but remain deeply connected to the places they call home—has been largely overlooked in traditional economic strategies, despite being one of Wales's greatest untapped assets. Working with GlobalWelsh, I'm excited to help change that—leveraging the platform and its growing momentum to connect skills, investment, and lived experience with the communities across Wales that need them most.'

New chief executive announced for education body in Wales
Dr Gwenllian Lansdown Davies, who currently leads Mudiad Meithrin, will take up the role as head of Wales' new professional learning and leadership body for the education sector. The organisation, launching on September 1, 2025, will support the development of teaching staff and education professionals in Wales. "I would like to thank Tegwen Ellis for her contribution to educational leadership over recent years, particularly in her role as the chief executive of the National Academy for Educational Leadership. "Her dedication and vision have made a lasting impact on the sector. "The professional learning and leadership body will incorporate some of the functions of the National Academy for Educational Leadership alongside a wider range of national professional learning opportunities." Dr Lansdown Davies said: "Having spent 11 years in the Welsh-language early years, childcare and play sector, I look forward to starting this new role and making a tangible impact by working alongside the education sector and delivering both local and national priorities." The new body will deliver professional learning to support educators and advisors in maintained schools and Pupil Referral Units across Wales.

Newport domestic abuse advocate starts unique business
Suzanne Bailey, from Newport, launched Informed Steps in 2024, a consultancy that helps employers identify and support staff who may be experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence, or exploitation. The business delivers in-person workshops and online consultancy to equip organisations with the tools to create safer, more supportive workplaces. Ms Bailey, an independent domestic violence advocate (IDVA) with 20 years' experience, said: "I never set out to be an entrepreneur, but years working with individuals facing challenges like domestic abuse, it was clear that noticing the tell-tale signs of harm in professional environments is extremely difficult. "I realised there was a gap in the market for a service that truly addresses these needs. "That is where Business Wales came in." Ms Bailey turned to Business Wales for guidance on starting her business. Senior business adviser Nichola Thomas helped her develop a business plan, conduct market research, and forecast cash flow. Ms Thomas said: "When Suzanne first came to me for assistance, her idea for the business was something I knew would be an extremely unique service here in Wales, that could make a real difference. "Providing this kind of service could be life-changing for so many people and Suzanne's passion for helping people was clear from our first conversation. "It has been a privilege to be able to work one-on-one with Suzanne as she establishes herself. "I look forward to our continued work together and seeing how the company will grow in the near future." Ms Bailey also received support from Welsh ICE and Cwmpas, attending a course for new business owners and networking events that helped her build contacts and refine her offering. She now hopes to expand Informed Steps with community-focused training sessions and new grant-funded projects. Her work aligns with the Welsh Government's priorities to support survivors and hold perpetrators to account. Ms Bailey said: "I had zero clue where to start setting up a business, so having Nichola has been instrumental in helping me to navigate my start-up. "She really has been there for me every step of the way."

CARAS award for Pembrokeshire County Show chairman
Mike Davies, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society's board of trustees, received the Associateship of the Royal Agricultural Societies (ARAgS) from CARAS at the Royal Welsh Show. Mr Davies said: "I am very proud to receive this award from CARAS. "It means a lot to me. "I don't seek recognition for the work I do but it is gratefully received." CARAS, the Council for Awards of Royal Agricultural Societies, honours individuals who have made a significant impact on agriculture and the wider rural sector. Mr Davies has played a key role in organising and running the Pembrokeshire County Show for many years. He began stewarding Welsh Mountain ponies in 1999, joined the executive committee in 2001, and went on to serve as chief steward of Welsh horse breeds and as show president in 2013. During the covid-19 pandemic, he led the society through a period of uncertainty, making difficult decisions to safeguard its future and ensure the county show could continue. Mansel Raymond MBE FRAgS, chair of CARAS Cymru and a former president of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society, said: "Mike Davies is a very worthy recipient of the ARAgS for his outstanding contribution to agriculture and the farming community in Pembrokeshire. "His commitment and dedication to the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society is very clear to see, and his skilful leadership has helped steer the society through difficulties and has helped ensure the continued existence of our beloved Pembrokeshire County Show and ensured that we still have this fabulous event in the county to showcase our farming industry." Mr Davies farms in partnership with his brother Martin and their families. He manages the dairy and arable unit at Good Hook alongside his wife Ann and sons Danny and Joe. Meanwhile, Martin runs a poultry unit at Cuckoo Mill Farm, producing turkeys for farmers' markets and the catering sector across south-west Wales. In addition to his work with the agricultural society, Mr Davies serves as chairman of the Pembrokeshire Hunt and chairman of Fallen Stock. Other Pembrokeshire recipients of the ARAgS award included Delme Harries, a director and trustee of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society since 2021. Mr Harries is also vice chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council and a long-serving representative of NFU Mutual. Additional honourees included Janet and Perkin Evans, William Pritchard, and Sam Kurtz, while Huw Thomas of Puffin Produce was elevated to Fellowship. The awards were presented by Mr Raymond at the Royal Welsh Show.
