Chael Sonnen reacts to Conor McGregor's ‘unfinished business' with Michael Chandler while dismissing the Notorious' wish for a stadium bout
Conor McGregor
's stepping back into the Octagon has now become a far-from-reality thing, with the fighter being more interested in his political venture. His newfound passion to run for the presidential post of Ireland has raised uncertainties in terms of scheduling the last two bouts remaining in his contract. The fighter, however, tries to remain relevant within the combat sports community through his posts on the recent happenings in the
UFC
. Recently, the fighter wrote on X, expressing his only condition to return to the Octagon, i.e. if the bout ever happens in a
stadium
. American promoter
Chael Sonnen
joins the league to comment on the condition of McGregor's as well as criticize his '
unfinished business
' with
Michael Chandler
.
American promoter Chael Sonnen gets critical about Conor McGregor's rumored return to the Octagon
Following the recent event of
WrestleMania 41
on the 19th and 20th of April, 2025 and the roaring success of it, Irish fighter Conor McGregor reposted a clip from the extravagant event and captioned it as 'I'll only come back to a stadium'
The condition met with a lot of criticism from the fans, who even interpreted McGregor's words to be indicative of the fact that the fighter will never return to the Octagon. American promoter Chael Sonnen seemed awestruck by the condition of McGregor.
'Conor McGregor will only return for a stadium-sized event. That's a fascinating claim.' Sonnen got nostalgic about the one time when a boxing match headlined by Manny Pacquiao was organized at a stadium in Dallas. The American promoter went on to list a few prerequisites, even if McGregor is willing to comeback to a stadium.
'If I want to promote that and I go, get a stadium, can I have him? Because something tells me I am also going to need pay-per-view, something tells me I am going to need a guarantee. Something tells me I am going to need a guarantee, something tells me I am going to need to bring in his entourage, something tells me I am also going to need a section of seats and something tells me he is going to need a cut of the revenue, but it doesn't say that.'
Chael Responds to Conor McGregor Latest Demand for UFC Return…
Ideas for an unconventional setting for bouts to happen is not a new thing. Sonnen himself got an offer once to fight Mike Tyson on top of a skyscraper, which never really happened. He also cited the example of KSI wanting to fight on Alcatraz once. Sonnen instead proposes an alternative with a smaller venue but a bigger paycheck of almost $100 million fo McGregor, wondering if the second option is more viable and workable.
Sonnen further criticized McGregor for his 'unfinished business' with Michael Chandler post on X. The former MMA fighter straight clarified the disastrous results of The
Ultimate Fighter 31
.
'You and Chandler don't have any business. You did a season of the Ultimate Fighter. The ratings were so bad, they had to bring me and Daniel Cormier in to try to revive the whole story…You did real bad business the one time you did business…there has never been a main event in UFC history that would have more losses from both sides going into it.'
Sonnen doesn't believe that a show featuring McGregor would pull an audience as large the size of a stadium. Owing to his previous way of pulling out of the fight against Chandler because of a toe injury, the audience wouldn't be keen on watching the same guy.

Chael Sonnen, while emphasizing on his relationship with Michael Chandler, dismisses the fact the Notorious has any business with Chandler. The promoter even nullified the desire of the Irish fighter to get into action at a stadium, simply by reflecting on the latter's bout records in recent times.

Is Ilia Topuria Ducking Arman Tsarukyan? Sean O'Malley Says, 'Why Risk It...'
Last Updated: O'Malley understands UFC lightweight champ Ilia Topuria's hesitation to fight Arman Tsarukyan, citing bigger names like Makhachev, Gaethje, and Pimblett as better options. Sean O'Malley isn't surprised that UFC champion Ilia Topuria is hesitant to book a showdown with the division's No. 1 contender, Arman Tsarukyan. Fresh off his first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira to claim the lightweight crown at UFC 317, Topuria now finds himself weighing risk versus reward for his first title defense. And 'Suga" admits he understands the champion's calculation. 'Arman definitely has a chance," O'Malley told The Overdogs Podcast. 'He definitely has a shot." Yet when O'Malley considers Topuria's position, he sees bigger names and bigger paydays on the table. 'In Ilia's mind… Ilia's such a massive superstar right now. It's like, why fight Arman when you could fight Islam [Makhachev] or even Gaethje is a bigger fight than Arman. I think Paddy is a bigger fight," O'Malley explained. That trio—Islam, Gaethje, and Paddy Pimblett—garner more eyeballs and bigger promotional buzz than Tsarukyan, whose resume, though formidable, doesn't light up the marquee quite like the others. 'So it just depends on where Ilia's head's at. Does he want to just go out there and say hey, I want the next best guy? I feel like he's kinda past that," O'Malley added. 'He's kinda like, who's the biggest fight? What's gonna [get] the most attention? And in his mind, it's not Arman right now. So, I kinda get where he's coming from. Why risk it against someone that's not super popular, who's very, very, very dangerous? Arman's very dangerous. So, I kinda get that from Ilia's perspective." O'Malley's own title reign carries a similar storyline of calculated matchmaking. He defended his bantamweight strap once—dominating Chito Vera in a five-round decision at UFC 299—rather than facing then–No. 1 Merab Dvalishvili, who was locked in a ten-fight win streak. Ultimately, Dvalishvili ended O'Malley's 392-day reign at UFC 306 last September. Just as O'Malley once picked his spots, Topuria is choosing marquee names over mandatory duties. For now, fans will have to wait and see if the UFC champ switches gears and grants Tsarukyan his long-awaited title shot—or fights fate and forfeits gold altogether. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 15:10 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. SummerSlam 2025: CM Punk to beat Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship, but not leave with the title?
CM Punk is set to challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2025 on August 2. The match will be the main-event of Night 1, which means it will close the show. The placement of this bout on the card suggests that it will end on a shocking note as is the case with most featured bouts. Take John Cena and Cody Rhodes' WrestleMania 41 match for instance. Its finish saw Cena beat 'QB1' with help from Travis Scott and capture the Undisputed Championship. Given this trend, one can expect the unexpected when Gunther locks horns with CM Punk as well. Seth Rollins to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase at SummerSlam 2025? Seth Rollins has not been seen on WWE programming since he picked up an 'injury' during his match against LA Knight at Saturday Night's Main Event last month. This was described as a legit setback, which would see him miss an extended period of time. In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, journalist Dave Meltzer confirmed that the WWE had planned an injury angle with Rollins. The plan was for him to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract on the winner of Gunther and Punk's match after being absent from WWE programming with an injury. Meltzer added that it is not clear whether the company still plans to go in this direction. He, however, did not explicitly rule out the possibility of a cash-in. That said, everything will eventually depend on the nature of Rollins' injury. If he is fir or the injury was a 'work', one can expect him to cash-in at SummerSlam. However, if 'The Visionary' is not cleared, WWE may take a different route to ensure a shocking finish. Is Bron Breakker WWE's 'plan B'? Bron Breakker has been Seth Rollins' ally since the night after WrestleMania 41. His association with the former Shield member has essentially propelled him to the main event scene. In fact, he recently called himself 'the leader' of the group in Rollins' absence. Given this, there is a possibility of Paul Heyman using his 'influence' to give 'The Badass' an opportunity to cash in the briefcase. That said, in either case, the cash-in is likely to happen on CM Punk as he has a history with Rollins and his faction. This suggests that 'The Best in the World' will beat Gunther to capture the gold this Saturday. He, however, may not leave as the champ. SummerSlam will be held at MetLife Stadium on August 2 and August 3. To stay updated on the stories that are going viral, follow Indiatimes Trending.

‘2019 World Cup, I saw him crying…: Yuzvendra Chahal on seeing Virat Kohli cry post World Cup semis loss against New Zealand
It has been close to six years since the Virat Kohli-led Indian team lost the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand and bowed out of the tournament in their bid to win the world title. With Kohli not winning a World Cup under his captaincy, the former Indian captain won the IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the first time in this year's IPL. Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has now shared how he also saw Kohli crying in the bathroom after the 2019 World Cup loss. Chahal was replying to a question about having seen Kohli cry while talking about Kohli in tears after winning the IPL trophy. 'In the 2019 World Cup, I saw him (Virat Kohli) crying in the bathroom. And then I was the last batter; when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes. In 2019, I saw everyone crying in the bathroom,' Chahal said in a YouTube show hosted by Raj Shamani. The Indian team had lost the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand, a match in which weather played a part. With rain interrupting the match on the first day, the match resumed on the reserve day with the Kiwis resuming at 211 for 6 in 46.1 overs. New Zealand set a target of 240 runs on the reserve day, followed by the Indian team being bundled out for a total of 221 runs in 49.3 overs. It also turned out to be Mahendra Singh Dhoni's last ODI match, as the former Indian captain announced his international cricket retirement in 2020. Chahal, who took one wicket for 63 runs in that match, shared that he regrets his performance in the semifinal. 'It was Mahi bhai's last match. I could have done better. I still regret that. I could have pushed myself a bit more, bowled a bit better, and leaked 10-15 fewer runs. But sometimes you are in that flow; it happens so quickly that you don't get time to think. I thought if I was calmer, I could have done even better. I gave my best, but it was the semi-final, a bigger stage, and you have to give your 10-15 percent extra,' Chahal added. The 35-year-old leg-spinner also shared his experience playing under different captains, including Rohit Sharma. 'I love how Rohit bhaiya carries himself on the ground. He's a very good captain. With Virat bhaiya, it's the energy he brings, the same energy every day. It will only go up and never down. Same energy. Every day,' said Chahal.
