‘The music is in good hands': SFJazz names new CEO following yearlong search
A seasoned arts executive and longtime leader at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center, Armand will officially assume the position on July 1, guiding the Bay Area's premier nonprofit jazz institution through a pivotal moment of both challenge and opportunity.
'It's the right time for me to make a big move like this and come into a city so deeply rooted in the arts, creativity and vibrancy,' Armand said. 'San Francisco is in a moment of regeneration, and there's so much excitement about its next chapter. It felt like a natural fit.'
Armand has nearly two decades of experience in arts marketing and strategic partnerships, most recently serving as chief marketing officer and vice president of brand, sales and marketing at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
There, she led transformative initiatives in media, corporate sponsorships and audience development that significantly elevated the organization's national and international presence.
She now brings that expertise west, joining SFJazz as it contends with financial pressures, changing demographics and the lingering effects of a pandemic that disrupted the live performance landscape.
'The richness of her experience at Jazz at Lincoln Center combined with her lifelong passion for the art form makes her the perfect leader for us,' said Coye, the board's president. 'We are excited for the opportunities ahead as Gabrielle helps expand the reach of jazz regionally and nationally, while deepening our commitment to education and artist support.'
Armand steps into her new role at a critical juncture. SFJazz, widely recognized as one of the most influential jazz presenters in the country, faces growing questions about its long-term sustainability, community engagement and strategic direction, like many local arts institutions.
She replaces Susie Medak, the former managing director of Berkeley Repertory Theatre, who served as interim CEO following Greg Stern 's decision to step down at the end of December after 4 ½ years with the nonprofit.
Armand will work in close partnership with Blanchard, an Emmy-winning trumpeter and twice Oscar-nominated film composer known as a leading figure in contemporary jazz.
'I see myself being on a listening tour for at least the first few months and spending real time with Terence to understand all the things that he wants to do,' Armand said, 'and then work together to kind of put together the priority list and the action plan.'
Their collaboration pairs Blanchard's artistic vision with Armand's strategic leadership.
'We're both keenly aware of our responsibilities in our respective lanes,' Armand noted. 'We see opportunities to cross-pollinate where it makes sense, but most importantly, we're committed to supporting one another. Terence is such a versatile and accomplished musician, I have enormous admiration for his artistry.'
Blanchard echoed her sentiment, calling Armand 'an outstanding leader with a deep understanding of the jazz world.'
'I'm excited to partner with her in advancing the vision and impact of SFJazz,' Blanchard said in a statement.
During her time at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Armand spearheaded a bold expansion into digital media, launching an in-house record label, a dedicated streaming channel and award-winning broadcast content.
'Both of our organizations have been intertwined in many ways over the past decades and this is a sign of our maturation,' said Wynton Marsalis, managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. 'Gaby's leadership will reflect a deep understanding of the civic, cultural and mythological significance of jazz. She will make ethical, fiscally responsible, and intelligent decisions that will bring new energy to our ecosystem. The music is in good hands.'
Armand sees similar opportunities at SFJazz, which has already experimented with online concerts and expanding its educational programming.
'SFJazz has an incredible foundation,' she said. 'My goal is to build on that and elevate the organization to new heights. It already has the essential ingredients every arts institution needs in times of transition: strong artistic leadership, an amazing staff and a supportive board. Those are the key elements you need whenever you're trying to turn things around, start a new chapter, or go in a different direction.'
With more than 30 years of experience across music, media and nonprofit sectors, Armand is no stranger to leading complex organizations. Still, she acknowledges the unique significance of this role — and this moment.
'SFJazz has long been a beacon in both the San Francisco and national arts communities,' she said. 'It's a place where diverse voices and ideas are nurtured and celebrated. As we approach the country's semi-quincentennial, it feels especially meaningful to lead an institution rooted in jazz, a uniquely American art form that has always taken a lot of different cultures within this country, integrated them and made space and been a place to support all kinds of different artists.'

‘Severance' star Tramell Tillman on keeping fans guessing about Milchick — and hoping for a Beyoncé sighting at the Emmys
Season 2 of Severance didn't just deepen the mystery of Lumon, the nefarious corporation that splits the psyches of its employees, but also one of the company's most loyal employees: Seth Milchick. The verbose floor manager played by Emmy nominee and recent Tom Cruise scene partner Tramell Tillman has become a fan-favorite character on the mind-bending series, despite doing everything he can to keep the series' heroes trapped in workplace limbo. More from Gold Derby The 5 most memorable moments of 'Adolescence,' ranked by cocreator Jack Thorne Jason Isaacs on exploring dark depths in 'The White Lotus': 'I want to live these vicarious, extreme experiences to find out who I'm meant to be' Ahead of the awards, Gold Derby spoke with Tillman about the humanity of Milchick and the moment he finally broke down after hearing the good news. Gold Derby: How does it feel to be an Emmy nominee? Tramell Tillman: I'm still processing it. This has been an incredible journey. I'm so fortunate to do what I love to do. There are so many people that don't have that opportunity, and to be seen and respected for what I love to do is such a treat. Working with such incredible artists and telling a really funny and wild and creative story, it checks so many boxes, and it almost feels as if I'm in a dream. But in the midst of it, I have to remind myself that this is life, this is happening, and this is real. Milchick has become a very beloved character, despite him acting as a direct antagonist to the heroes. Why do you think that is? What I love about the fandom around Milchick is the mystery of who this guy is and the debates about whether he's a good guy or he's not. I love playing characters that are a bit mysterious and that have that sense of humanity that we can't really figure out. How aware are you of wanting to ride that line and maintaining that mystery when calibrating your performance? I try not to think about how people respond to the character and do my best to play the character as honestly as I can, given the circumstances he's under. He's the kind of guy who will do whatever it takes to reach a goal. And with that, because he has so many different personalities that he has to navigate and so many different scenarios that he has to finagle, we see different colors of him. So because I tend to focus on meeting the goal as a character, I spend less time worrying whether or not someone likes him or not, because I don't really think that's his motivation. What was your reaction to hearing you had been nominated? I pretty much held it together until I called my mom and asked her to be my date for the Emmys. When she started crying, I started crying. How is Mom going to be at the Emmys? Is she going to play it cool during commercial breaks? My mom is quite the party person. She is not a wallflower at all. She told me, "I'm gonna let you take your pictures, but I will be out there and having my fun." I would not be surprised if she has rubbed elbows and chatted up and befriended everyone in that room, because that's just who she is. Do you know who she is looking to meet? She's a big fan of Sheryl Lee Ralph. I hope that Beyoncé and Jay-Z will be there. She would probably love to meet them, and I would like to meet them, too. ‘Severance' star John Turturro reflects on how his ‘The Batman' villain spawned ‘The Penguin'
'You a big man now, Oz, eh? Because to me, you were always just a gimp in an empty suit.' Such are the final words of Carmine Falcone in The Batman. The slaying of the mob boss, memorably played by John Turturro, creates a power vacuum in Gotham City that various players, from former underling Oz 'The Penguin' Cobb to daughter Sofia Falcone/Gigante, scramble to fill — events that form the backbone of the Emmy-nominated HBO limited series The Penguin. More from Gold Derby Reality Rematch: Alan or RuPaul? Emmy voters have a whole host of choices 'Kiss of the Spider Woman': Everything to know about Jennifer Lopez's return to the Oscar race as new trailer drops Turturro, an Emmy nominee himself for Severance, joined Gold Derby for a wide-ranging interview (watch this space for the full Q&A) in which he briefly discussed his indirect role in spawning The Penguin. 'I had a wonderful time doing that film. I really did,' says Turturro, who had no idea during production that director Matt Reeves would eventually do a television spin-off triggered by Falcone's demise. The actor had high praise for The Penguin stars Colin Farrell, reprising his role from The Batman, and Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia. 'I think the leads on the show are both great," he says. "He's great. She's great. So I watched them just a little bit.' But while he's a fan of The Penguin performers, Turturro says he was ready to move on from the Gotham underworld without seeing how the struggle ultimately panned out. (Spoiler alert: Oz gets the last laugh, and Sofia gets locked up in Arkham Asylum, where she receives a note from another alum of The Batman, half-sister Selina "Catwoman" Kyle, played in the movie by Zoë Kravitz.) 'I feel like I had done my thing with [The Batman],' he says, 'and sometimes it's better for me to leave things to the imagination.' The Emmys could prove to be a reunion of sorts for the extended Falcone family (or the burgeoning Turturro Cinematic Universe), with Turturro's Best Drama Supporting Actor bid among the 27 nominations for Severance, Milioti and Farrell's nominations for lead actress and actor in a limited series among the 24 nods for The Penguin, and Kravitz up for her guest turn on The Studio. The TV Academy might want to have Batman on call, just to be safe.
