BYD previews electric Porsche 911 rival with Denza Z concept

West Australian24-04-2025
BYD already has an electric sports car with the
Yangwang U9
, and now it has previewed another with the Z concept from its other premium brand, Denza.
It may be labelled a concept car, but the four-seater Denza Z looks quite production-ready.
Denza hasn't confirmed outputs from the electric powertrain, so it's unclear how much more grunt it has than the 710kW tri-motor
Denza Z9
. However, Denza has detailed some of the hardware used by the Z.
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal.

It features DiSus-M, which Denza claims is 'the industry's first intelligent magnetorheological body control system exclusively for new energy vehicles'.
It says this system scans the road thousands of times per seconds and adjusts the suspension continuously in real time.
The Denza Z also features what the brand is calling 'China's first full-stack self-developed steer-by-wire system', supported by 'AI's deep learning of driving style'.
The system is claimed to be able to adapt and evolve by itself, while also simulating road feedback 'in a real way'.
Another intriguing feature is a folding steering wheel, which Denza says can help make it easier to extricate a driver from the vehicle should it be involved in an extreme crash.
The Denza Z looks the business, with headlights and tail-lights that call to mind Lamborghini models, but bulging haunches and graceful curves that are more Ferrari-like.
It's all topped off with details like an enormous rear wing and vents atop the front fenders, with yellow brake calipers and matching yellow highlights on the wing, side skirts, front apron and rear diffuser.
The proportions are suggestive of a traditional mid-engine sports car.
Inside, there are racy carbon-fibre bucket seats with four-point harnesses, finished in microfibre and leather.
The folding steering wheel is squared-off, while there's a digital instrument cluster ahead of the driver, a large free-standing infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard, and a slim tertiary display on the passenger side.
Below the touchscreen is a row of physical buttons, while a sharply angled centre console features some more switchgear plus the gear shifter.
It's unclear when a production Z will launch.
Denza, previously a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz, offers sports sedans and wagons, people movers, and SUVs in China, with both plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
The brand is locked in for a local launch during 2025, and while Denza has yet to confirm which models it'll sell here, the large Bao 5 off-roader from fellow BYD brand Fangchengbao has been spied testing and the Denza B5 name has been confirmed for other markets.

Ram teases HiLux competitor with Chinese roots

Ram has teased a body-on-frame ute to take on the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, but the new model may be exclusive to Latin America. The company posted a teaser video (bottom) on its social media accounts for several South American markets, including Argentina and Brazil. In it we're treated to shadowy shots of the ute's tailgate, headlights, bonnet, grille, and wheels. There's prominent Ram lettering and Nightfall badging on the tailgate, and Turbo badges on the bonnet bulge. The latter suggests it will be powered by a turbo-diesel engine. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. From what we can see the new ute will be based on the Peugeot Landtrek sold in Africa and Fiat Titano available in Latin America. Both the Landtrek and Titano aren't indigenous Stellantis designs, though, as they are in turn based on the Changan F70/Hunter, which is also sold by the Deepal marque. Notably, the new ute's name has yet to be revealed. Ram already sells a version of the Landtrek/Titano in Mexico as the 1200 (below), but rumour has it the brand will revive the Dakota name that was used until 2011 by Dodge for its 'global mid-size pickup'. Compared to the existing 1200, the new ute has LED headlights connected by light bar to a more aggressive grille with humungous Ram lettering, chunkier alloy wheels, and will be available with a roof-mounted light bar and amber lights on the bonnet. Overall it promises to be meanest looking model yet derived from the Changan/Peugeot/Fiat ute. In Latin America, the Landtrek/Titano is offered with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel making 147kW and 450Nm. It's paired to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive. In all likelihood, the Ram version will use the same drivetrain. The new Ram ute will reportedly be built in Argentina alongside the Fiat Titano (above). It will sit above the Ram Rampage dual-cab, which features a monocoque body, and a platform shared with the Jeep Compass SUV and Fiat Toro ute. Rumours have swirled for years that Ram is planning a smaller body-on-frame ute to sit underneath the 1500 for global consumption. A July report from Mopar Insiders claimed Ram was planning to start production of just such a ute in 2027 at its plant in Belvidere, Illinois. This US-built model is thought to use a smaller version of the STLA Frame architecture that underpins the Ram 1500. If true, it will be quite a different beast to the Changan-based model heading to Latin America. While Ford has one mid-size ute in the Australian-developed Ranger, which is sold around world including at home in America, Toyota has two different models: the Tacoma for North America, and HiLux for the rest of the world. The Tacoma is larger and uses a more modern platform shared with the LandCruiser, while the HiLux employs a tried-and-true architecture that dates back to the early 2000s. It remains to be seen which strategy Ram emulates for its new ute. Previous Ram CEOs indicated its US-bound mid-size pickup would also be produced for right-hand drive markets, like Australia.

Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5: More kit and more models complete EV SUV range

Volkswagen is giving its ID.4 and ID.5 duo more features as the full range of mid-size electric SUVs becomes available locally. The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro join the entry-level ID.4 Pro and flagship ID.5 GTX that reached local showrooms in July. They're arriving here as model year 2025.5 (MY25.5) vehicles, and all MY25.5 ID.4 and ID.5 variants now come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus massaging front seats. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. The updated electric SUVs carry the same price tag as before, but buyers who opt for leftover MY25 stock of the ID.4 Pro and ID.5 GTX will pay the same list price but get a free 7kW home EV charger. This includes installation by a certified installer, and the total package is valued at $1899. Volkswagen is continuing to offer all ID.4 and ID.5 variants with an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty and Guaranteed Future Value (GFV) through Volkswagen Financial Services. The single-motor rear-wheel drive ID.4 Pro opens Volkswagen's mid-size electric SUV lineup, priced at $59,990 before on-road costs. The more curvaceous ID.5 Pro is $3000 more expensive at $62,990 before on-roads. Pro variants come with a 210kW electric motor that's claimed to give them a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds. Range is 543-544km on the WLTP cycle. The sportier, dual-motor all-wheel drive GTX variants are priced at $69,990 and $72,990 before on-roads, respectively. Total power output is 250kW and their claimed 0-100km/h time is slashed to 5.4 seconds, but range takes a dip to 511km in the ID.4 and 522km in the ID.5. You can view a full breakdown of pricing and specifications for the ID.4 and ID.5 in the articles linked below.
