Ballon d'Or 2025 Rankings: Top 5 contenders after the Club World Cup
Ousmane Dembélé has emerged as the leading candidate for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, and it's easy to see why. The Paris Saint-Germain star has been a force this season, leading his team to a Champions League triumph and a Club World Cup final appearance. With an impressive tally of 33 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, Dembélé's impact has been undeniable. His pivotal performances, including a goal against Bayern Munich and an assist in the Club World Cup semifinal thrashing of Real Madrid, have solidified his position at the top. Despite PSG's loss to Chelsea in the final, Dembélé's consistency and big-game mentality make him a strong favorite to claim the Golden Ball, potentially becoming only the fourth player in 17 years to break the Messi-Ronaldo dominance, joining Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, and Rodri. 2. Lamine Yamal
At just 18 years old, Lamine Yamal is making waves as one of football's brightest young stars. The FC Barcelona wonderkid has dazzled with 18 goals and 21 assists in the 2024-25 season, leading La Liga in successful dribbles with an average of 4.6 per match. His flair and maturity shone through in La Liga and the Champions League, though Barcelona's absence from the Club World Cup slightly dented his chances. Still, Yamal's individual brilliance and key contributions to Barça's domestic double keep him firmly in the top tier. If voters prioritize potential and impact, Yamal could make history as the youngest Ballon d'Or winner ever. 3. Raphinha
Raphinha has been a key figure in Barcelona's La Liga and Copa del Rey triumphs, finishing the season with 18 goals and 11 assists in La Liga alone, plus a joint-top 13 goals in the Champions League. His standout moments include a hat-trick against Bayern Munich and decisive contributions in El Clásico and against Dortmund. While Barcelona's absence from the Club World Cup limited his global exposure, Raphinha's creativity and consistency make him a strong contender, often ranked in the top five. 4. Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah's 2024-25 season was nothing short of historic, with 34 goals and 23 assists in the Premier League alone, leading Liverpool to the title under Arne Slot. His 47 goal involvements set a new Premier League record, and he claimed the Golden Boot. However, Liverpool's early Champions League exit and lack of international success in 2025 have slightly weakened his case. Despite a late-season dip in form, Salah's sheer output in Europe's most competitive league keeps him in the conversation, though his chances of topping the list are fading. 5. Kylian Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé was expected to dominate the 2025 Ballon d'Or race after his blockbuster move to Real Madrid, where he scored 40 goals and 5 assists in his debut season. A hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League was a highlight, but Real Madrid's trophyless domestic campaign and early Champions League exit hurt his prospects. His struggles in the Club World Cup, particularly against his former club PSG, further derailed his bid for the Golden Ball. While still a world-class talent, Mbappé's lack of team silverware this season has pushed him down the rankings.

Liverpool have reached an ‘outline agreement' with Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike
Liverpool have reached an outline agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the transfer of former Paris Saint-Germain forward Hugo Ekitike (22), as per . While formalities remain, the deal is expected to be completed within days and could become a record sale for Frankfurt if all add-ons are met. The striker enjoyed a blistering first full season in Germany after moving to Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain – netting 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last term. Those performances earned him a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season, and now appear set to earn him a blockbuster move to Anfield. Ekitike's form reignited interest from Newcastle, who reportedly had a €75m bid rejected earlier this summer. Liverpool then entered the race, having also made contact with Newcastle over Alexander Isak and showing a willingness to spend over £120m. With personal terms not expected to be an issue, the Frenchman could become a key attacking addition under new manager Arne Slot. His arrival may also accelerate departures: Luis Diaz is pushing for an exit, and Darwin Nunez is no longer considered untouchable. | George Boxall

Live updates: Messi, Suarez in starting lineup as Inter Miami faces the N.Y. Red Bulls
As Inter Miami looks to turn the page Saturday night on one of its ugliest losses of the season, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez remain in their starting lineup as they prepare to face the New York Red Bulls at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J. Inter Miami (11-4-5) enters the game with 38 points, in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, and looking to start climbing again after failing to secure any points this past Wednesday in a 3-0 loss at FC Cincinnati. Messi starts once again just three days after his MLS-record five-game streak of games with multiple goals was snapped against Cincinnati. Suarez also gets the start despite his recent struggles as he looks to find the back of the net for the first time since June 23 in a Club World Cup opening round game against Palmeiras. He last scored in an MLS league match on May 31 in Miami's 5-1 win over the Columbus Crew. Suarez has failed to score in Miami's past five matches across all competitions. As Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano announced Friday, goalkeeper Oscar Ustari is out for Saturday's game after suffering an injury on Wednesday. Rocco Rios Novo will get the start. Gonzalo Lujan (hamstring) returns to Miami's starting XI along with Federico Redondo, who missed Wednesday's game while dealing with an illness. The rest of Miami's starting lineup consists of Marcelo Weigandt, Maxi Falcon, Jordi Alba, Tadeo Allende and Sergio Busquets. Miami beat the Red Bulls 4-1 on May 3 at Chase Stadium. New York (9-8-6) enters Saturday's game with 33 points and in eighth place in the East.

Germany's Kathrin Hendrich red-carded for hair-pulling in Euro 2025 quarterfinal
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — A player was sent off at the Women's European Championship for pulling an opponent's hair, six days after a similar incident during the Club World Cup final. The Video Assistant Referee spotted Germany midfielder Kathrin Hendrich yanking the ponytail of France captain Griedge Mbock as a free kick was floated into the area. With less than 13 minutes played, Hendrich was shown a red card and moments later Grace Geyoro converted the resulting penalty to give France a 1-0 lead in Saturday's quarterfinal. It was a somewhat unusual red card but the second such incident in the space of less than a week. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder João Neves was sent off for pulling down Marc Cucurella by his hair, towards the end of Chelsea's 3-0 victory in the trophy match of the Club World Cup last Sunday. ___ AP soccer:
