Stockton Speedway, Lodi Lake fireworks shows canceled after Esparto warehouse fire
Thursday night's fireworks show at the New Stockton 99 Speedway is canceled, the Noceti Group, which operates the track, announced on social media. The Lodi Lake fireworks show, scheduled the evening of Friday, July 4, also is canceled.
The city of Lodi attributed the Fourth of July fireworks cancellation to the warehouse fire in Esparto, the small rural Yolo community where the fireworks for the show were kept. The warehouse had several explosions around 6 p.m. Tuesday. Other structures on the property caught fire and flames spread into grass fire, forcing evacuations in the area. The cause of the fire is still unknown, said the Yolo County Sheriff's Office.
"We are heartbroken to share that this year's Lodi Lake fireworks show has been cancelled," city of Lodi officials said Wednesday on social media. "We know how much this tradition means to our community, and this news saddens us deeply. Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out those affected by this tragedy. No alternate show is planned at this time."
The Esparto Fire Protection District and Cal Fire — Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a joint statement on Wednesday morning that seven people remained unaccounted for.
"This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements," officials said.
Regarding the show at the Stockton speedway, promoter Tony Noceti and his team explored every possible alternative, but replacements were unavailable due to the short notice, the group said.
"We ask that you please keep the families and all those affected by the Esparto explosion in your thoughts and prayers," the Noceti Group said.
Friday's Lodi Lakes fireworks show was set to begin around 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July.
City officials said the community can still enjoy Fourth of July festivities at Lodi Lake on Friday. The park will be open to the public from 2 to 8 p.m., with normal park rules in effect.
Tickets are still available for the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, set for 7 to 11 a.m. on Friday at 1101 W. Turner Road in Lodi. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, city officials said. Bike parking will be available in the West Beach lot.
Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for children 5 and younger.
The Boathouse will also be open for reservations. To make a reservation, visit lodiboathouse.com/4th-of-july/. City officials encourage visitors to walk or bike when possible, as parking is "extremely limited" and no vehicles will be allowed inside the park.

Former sheriff Alex Villanueva registers for 2026 sheriff's race
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has registered a campaign committee for the November 2026 election to win back his previous post. Villanueva's is the biggest name yet to declare in the race for the position he lost to Sheriff Robert Luna in 2022. Luna has already declared his plans to seek reelection. A filing on the California Secretary of State's website shows that a Villanueva for Sheriff 2026 committee has been registered. It's unclear when the filing was made. In an email to The Times Saturday, Villanueva did not immediately respond to questions seeking confirmation about his intentions but he said "I'll have something available next week." Luna has run the sheriff's department with a relatively calm hand, after Villanueva presided over a period of controversy and lawsuits. But Villanueva has maintained a high profile, using social media and appearances on broadcast platforms to weigh in on a wide range of issues concerning the department and county politics. Community mourns loss of parole agent with Sacramento ties
A beloved parole agent with strong ties to Sacramento is being remembered not only for his dedication to public service but also for the profound impact he had both through his work and through the game he loved. Joshua Byrd, a 39-year-old veteran with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday inside a state parole office in East Oakland. The former Navy servicemember had spent more than a decade working as a correctional officer before becoming a parole agent last year. But in Sacramento, Byrd's legacy stretched far beyond his day job. "He had the biggest smile, the greatest team player you can ask for," said Cary Trzcinski, director of the Pig Bowl, a long-running charity football game featuring local first responders. "He was just an overall great person, great guy to have on our team." Byrd played on the offensive line, a role Trzcinski said fit his quiet leadership style. "Josh was one of the anchors of the team," he said. "Not only on the field, but in the locker room, at practice, and during the community events he took part in. He just kept us all together." For more than 50 years, the Pig Bowl has brought first responders together to raise money for local causes. For those in that close-knit community, Byrd's death hits especially hard. "It hurts even more when one of those officers is one of your brothers," Trzcinski said. "He was family to us. So it hurts because he was one of us." Byrd leaves behind a wife and three children. An online fundraiser has been set up to support his family in the wake of the tragedy. As the investigation continues, friends and fellow first responders say Byrd's life spoke volumes about the kind of man he was, a selfless servant who lifted others around him. "Everything he did was for someone else," Trzcinski said. "He didn't do things to glorify himself or to get credit. He was there for people. He was just an overall good person." Organizers said next year's Pig Bowl will include a tribute to Byrd, ensuring his legacy lives on through a game and a community he helped shape.

Orange County pursuit ends when driver loses control, crashes after blowing tire in pickup truck
A wild pursuit through Southern California came to a sudden end on Saturday night when the driver of a pickup truck lost control and smashed into another vehicle in Norwalk. The pursuit began around 9 p.m. near the 405 and 605 Freeway interchange, which is about where Orange County and Los Angeles County meet. The California Highway Patrol said the chase was initiated by a law enforcement agency in the OC before being transferred to the CHP. The pursuit of a red pickup truck continued into L.A. County. The want was originally for weaving, the CHP said. When SKYCal located the vehicle around 9:36 p.m., the front driver-side tire was clearly blown out, as a large trail of sparks followed the speeding truck. Eventually, the driver turned onto Imperial Highway in Norwalk, where he continued driving at a high rate of speed. At about 9:37 p.m., the driver lost control and the truck spun into the back of a sedan that was waiting at a red light. The sedan's airbags clearly deployed upon collision. Two people were seen walking away from the vehicle while speaking to officers, appearing to be OK. The red truck spun onto the road's center median in the area of Imperial Highway and Studebaker Road. The driver exited through a window and began walking away from officers, but they quickly tackled him and took him into custody. It's not clear if the driver was armed during the chase. No additional details were immediately made available.
