Charles Leclerc in bluntly-honest Lewis Hamilton verdict amid Ferrari team-mate's woe
Charles Leclerc said he is "desperate" for Lewis Hamilton to get back to his best amid the darkest period of the Brit's Ferrari career. The Hungarian Grand Prix was a particularly chastening experience for the seven-time Formula 1 champion who qualified only 12th and made no progress in the race.
After Saturday's session, he declared himself "useless" and suggested the team should replace him in a difficult-to-watch interview. And his mood was no better after the race itself, stating bluntly that "nothing had changed" from the previous day.
The summer break has arrived at the perfect time for Hamilton who had the air of a man who desperately needs to reset. And Leclerc hopes that is team-mate can get it together soon to help push the team on to new heights.
The Monegasque said: "At the end we are one team, and as much as I want to finish in front of Lewis, I want both of us to be successful, and Ferrari to be successful.
"Obviously, this weekend has been a tough one for Lewis, but I have no doubt it is a one-off and I am sure the second part of the season will be a lot more positive."
Leclerc has been by far the stronger Ferrari driver so far this year. He is only one place above Hamilton in the championship, the Scuderia duo fifth and sixth, but has 151 points compared to the Brit's 109 and has stood on the podium five times so far, while Hamilton has yet to record a top-three finish.
Leclerc has also regularly had Hamilton's number in both qualifying and the race. He has outqualified his team-mate 10 times out of 14 so far this year, and finished ahead of the Brit on 11 occasions – that figure would have been 12, had they not both been disqualified from the Chinese Grand Prix back in March.
Despite their struggles at times, Ferrari head into the summer break second in the championship, 14 points ahead of Mercedes. Leaders McLaren are 299 points clear and almost guaranteed the title, meaning the best the Scuderia can hope for is to be the best of the rest behind them.

Ferrari also face the prospect of a first season since 2020 without a Grand Prix win, which was the only year in which they failed to take a single victory in the 21st century. And Leclerc does not have much hope that they will be able to prevent that from happening.
He said: "I don't think we are going into the second half of the season thinking that we can win anywhere, and that's what makes the frustration even bigger, because we knew that this was one opportunity probably over the season and we had to take it, but unfortunately with [his car issue suffered in the Budapest race] we couldn't do much."

If they were to make a change, they would in theory turn to one of their reserve drivers, Zhou Guanyu and Antonio Giovinazzi, both of whom are former F1 racers with Sauber, or British academy graduate Bearman who is currently plying his trade with customer team Haas and who is seen as Hamilton's eventual successor. But Bernie Ecclestone believes there are a couple of other rookies on the grid who should also be considered. "If I could steal him, I would take Isack Hadjar from Racing Bulls," the former F1 supremo told Mail Sport. "He has done super well in his first year and is a great guy. I also rate our friend from Brazil [Sauber driver Gabriel Bortoleto ]. He is talented. Both of them are sensible, too." While it is unlikely that Hamilton will give up on his dream of winning an eighth F1 title just yet, Ecclestone believes it is time for the 40-year-old to move on. Fernando Alonso's cheeky dig at F1 driver who overhears Spaniard mid-interview
Fernando Alonso was overheard by another Formula One driver as the Spaniard shared a joke after the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading to an on-camera reaction from the young racer Fernando Alonso playfully claimed Aston Martin"were a lot faster than Sauber", just as their driver and his close friend Gabriel Bortoleto walked past him. The Spaniard was speaking following the Hungarian Grand Prix, where the 20-year-old Brazilian had been breathing down his throughout the race. The pair scrapped it out for fifth place, with Alonso ultimately passing the chequered flag seven seconds before Bortoleto, securing 10 championship points for Aston Martin. Despite this, the F1 rookie managed to keep Alonso's team-mate Lance Stroll at bay by a slender two-second gap to claim sixth spot. Following the race, the Aston Martin star spoke with the media ahead of the sport's three-week summer break. Whilst Alonso was reflecting on his display, he noticed Bortoleto walking behind him and seized the opportunity to have a cheeky pop at the Sauber driver. Alonso said: "Yeah, it feels good and we were a lot faster than the Sauber you know," beaming as he watched Bortoleto turning around to give him a little bit of grief. Bortoleto wandered back over, and the duo shared a warm embrace after having a good chuckle about it. Alonso has maintained a strong friendship with the promising driver for quite some time, ever since the legend helped launch Bortoleto's career back in 2022. Speaking to the rising star recalled the moment he was battling to secure a place in an F3 team, when his father happened to meet Alonso at a Red Bull event. Bortoleto said: "We had so many issues in 2022. We were not being followed by anyone at the time. It was just me and my father and I didn't have an opportunity to go to F3 at the time. "We didn't know how difficult it was to get a seat in F3. We thought, 'Oh we're still in July, we have time.' Then I started hearing PREMA was full, Trident was almost full and I thought maybe we should start pushing for it. "It's not easy, you need to find the sponsors to help you get there. Then my father went to race in the Red Bull Ring with some friends. He met Fernando and Alberto and Albert." After this chance encounter with the F1 icon, Bortoleto secured a deal with Alonso's management company, A14, which he runs alongside his two associates, Alberto Fernández Albilares and Albert Resclosa Coll. Reflecting on this partnership, the 20-year-old added: "Fernando knew who I was as I raced for his team in FRECA [the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine]. I had some great results for the team like the first podium, the first front row. "Both of us wanted to be together, me having a good management team, and them trusting in a young driver who could potentially do good results in the future. "They called Trident and it was quite a crazy thing. Everything worked out very well. We signed, we won the championship – and it became very nice." Following that breakthrough, Bortoleto secured F3 and F2 championships in 2023 and 2024 before signing a deal with Kick Sauber for the 2025 F1 campaign. The promising youngster acknowledges Alonso's impact as a pivotal moment in his racing journey, explaining how the Spaniard's backing has enhanced his reputation within the sport. "We have a very good relationship with each other," Bortoleto said. "I think it's mainly a professional relationship. Always when we talk, it's mainly about racing. When I see him on track, if I have any questions, he always helped me in F3 and F2. "I can say I'm very grateful for all the advice he has given me the last two years. He has been very good to me. He's willing to help and teach me. It's a great thing to have him behind. "It's a strong name to have behind you. When you have Fernando Alonso managing you, it's a bit different because they know it's someone like him trusting you can be a future talent."
