First up was Nicholas Bennett, who earned his place in the hot seat after fastest finger first.
The West Hampstead data analyst was supported by his family as he made his way through the questions, starting an impressive run as he made his way to his first safety net of £125,000 with no pressure.
In an impressive run of questions, Nicholas managed to make it to the all-important £1million question with lifelines still in his back pocket.
However, he then ran into trouble, and needed to use his remaining two lifelines in order to try and secure the win.
Jeremy asked him: 'Which of these words, each coined by a famous writer, was derived from the title of a fairytale about three princes: Pandamonium, Serendipity, Utopia or Yahoo.'
Using the lifeline to ask Jeremy, the host admitted: 'I'm loathe to say anything… because if I do say something…'
Noting that all four potential answers must have been coined by an author, Jeremy struggled before admitting: 'I can't think of a fairytale that's about three princes.'
Nicholas noted that it had 'twigged something in his head' – saying he had recently been to see a puppet show while in Spain about three princes, but it was in Spanish so he wasn't sure what they were saying… but thought someone was saying Yahoo.
Jeremy then sadly bowed out, saying he didn't know the answer.
So with that falling flat, Nicholas opted for his second lifeline to phone a friend in order to call his roommate, Meg.
Who Wants To Be A Milionaire contestant forced to use two lifelines on tricky pop star question - would you know it-
Once calling her, Jeremy told her just how much was on the line, but she didn't know either.
Despite this, Nicholas decided he was going to gamble and pick an answer anyway, leaving Jeremy stunned.
'£375,000 is what you're gambling,' Jeremy reminded him. 'I know you still go away with a lot but…'
But Nicholas had made his mind up, saying Yahoo as his final answer – prompting a round of grimacing noises from the audience.
Sadly, he was wrong – the right answer was Serendipity – and he walked away with just £125,000.
Despite not becoming a millionaire, Jeremy noted: 'A couple things I'm trying to work out is, is that the biggest loss we've had in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire history, and I don't think I've had a contestant that I've enjoyed more than you.'
But Nicholas seemed content with taking home the £125,000 – and walked away happy.
As the scenes played out on screen, one fan wrote: "Unlucky to the bloke for not getting the million-pound question. But fair play to him for giving it go.
"He seemed [like] a really nice guy. Gutted for him!" noted another, while a third said: "What a shame. Fair play to the lad for giving it a go."

Rebecca Loos bluntly shoots down Richard Madeley on Good Morning Britain as they clash over David Beckham - swiping 'we don't need to talk about this'
Rebecca Loos bluntly shot down Richard Madeley during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Monday as they clashed over David Beckham. The former glamour model, 48, appeared on the ITV breakfast show's sofa to talk about her appearance on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Speaking to Richard, 69, and Kate Garraway, Rebecca expressed her disappointment at David, 50, being brought up so much on the Channel 4 show. She said: 'It was a little bit disappointing that there was so much focus on [David Beckham] in the interrogation room, because I really did think that going in there was an opportunity for them to get to know me.' Rebecca added: 'That was a very small part of my life. It is what it is.' However, the interview turned tense as Richard insisted on pressing her on the subject. The daytime legend probed: 'Do you blame him? He was a married man with children, do you blame him? This is the last question about David Beckham.' As Rebecca desperately attempted to move on, she quipped: 'I think we should just focus on SAS.' Richard replied: 'But that's the last question. Do you blame him?' Standing firm, Rebecca doubled down on her reply, saying: 'I want to talk about SAS, sorry Richard... We don't need to talk about this this morning, we're here for SAS.' Rebecca's appearance on GMB comes after she was reduced to tears after she was punched in the face by a co-star on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins on Sunday night. After four departures in the first week, the latest episode aired on Sunday as the remaining celebrities were tasked with engaging in a one-on-one fight. Rebecca was paired with former X Factor star Lucy Spraggan who had control and dominated the fight from the beginning. Before the challenge got underway, Special Forces and former Royal Marine Commando Jason Fox told the group: 'Violence in its rawest form is hand-to-hand, you are eye-to-eye with your opponent and it is about overpowering them. 'We use controlled aggression, it is not blind anger. Anger is an emotion that we have not got any time for.' With the 34-year-old throwing punches, it left Rebecca spending the majority of the fight defending herself from the blows, including to the face. As she struggled on, fans could hear shouts for her 'throw a punch'. After being told to 'stop', Rebecca was visibly in tears as she removed her head gear, while wiping her nose. With Lucy declared the winner, a cutaway shot showed Rebecca also wiping her tears away with her sleeve and trying to catch her breath, saying: 'F***ing hell.' Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 from 6am and is available to stream on ITVX.

BBC Breakfast guest slammed for 'harsh and disrespectful' swipe at late Blue Peter star Biddy Baxter - with shocked fans gasping 'he clearly wasn't a fan!'
A BBC Breakfast guest has been slammed by viewers for his 'harsh and disrespectful' jab at Blue Peter 's Biddy Baxter - who died on Monday at the age of 92. Former presenter Peter Purves was invited onto the daytime news show to pay tribute to the late editor of the children's television programme. Having worked under Biddy for 11 years, Lancashire-born Peter offered a comment on Biddy's character and career. But angry viewers were shocked at his 'harsh' critique and were quick to question what they deemed a 'disrespectful' interview. Peter acknowledged Biddy's fierce professional prowess, and told hosts Sarah Campbell and Jon Kay: 'Oh, she was an absolute powerhouse. 'The programme would not still exist if it had not been for her, she was very controlling and she controlled the show wonderfully.' Former presenter Peter Purves (L) has been slammed by viewers for his 'harsh and disrespectful' jab at Blue Peter's Biddy Baxter (R) - who died on Monday at the age of 92 Former presenter Peter was invited onto the daytime news show to pay tribute to the late editor of the children's television programme (Biddy pictured in 1997) Peter, 86, recalled how Biddy had been offered the position of the BBC's head of children's programmes in the 70s, but she turned down the promotion in favour of continuing her 'hands-on' Blue Peter role. But Peter repeatedly highlighted Biddy's 'controlling' nature, saying: 'I mean, she controlled everything about the programme and with quite a rigid hand - we didn't always get on because of that.' The former Doctor Who actor successfully painted a picture of Biddy as a determined high-achiever, who led Blue Peter to the great fame it enjoyed. 'She knew exactly what she wanted the programme to be and it was a success absolutely because of her,' he said. 'She was a remarkable woman, she was very fixed in her views, always consistent, she wasn't inconsistent in any way.' But Peter added: '[She was] sometimes quite difficult to work with because of the way she wanted to do it, but she was very innovative, the programme would not have had the spread that it did have without her influence.' He continued: 'She didn't let us,' before catching the blunt phrase and laughing at himself, rephrasing: 'She didn't let us - autocue was not available to us. 'We got a script the day before the programme and we did it live, having learnt it, and we had to learn it.' Peter praised the 'highly produced' work of Biddy, but told how she would sometimes 'muck it about' by changing things last-minute before the live broadcast. Peter said: 'Literally sometimes seconds before you were on air, she was changing things on the programme that we'd rehearsed during the day. 'In the worst cases she would come down about ten minutes before the programme and alter the running order completely, and that affects everybody.' 'It could be very, very testing,' he admitted, before adding: 'But it was very gratifying and she was a very, very clever lady.' Biddy did not have children of her own, said Peter, but this didn't stop her from 'understanding the audience better than we did.' Peter looked back on his work days, saying: 'I remember her saying very clearly to me, when I'd been on the programme for about a year, that I was still being too "schoolmasterly" and she didn't want that.' He concluded: 'She knew what she wanted and what she wanted, she got.' But Peter's candid tribute did not sit well with fans, who flocked to social media to swap notes on the unusual segment. Peter's candid tribute did not sit well with fans, who flocked to social media to swap notes on the unusual segment 'Peter Purves bashing Biddy Baxter was obviously not the best person to speak on her death announcement,' one person wrote online. 'It was just a dig followed by a compliment followed by another dig. So disrespectful.' Another echoed the sentiment, writing: 'It's well known Peter Purvis was not a fan of Biddy Baxter. 'He has just been on BBC Breakfast and, yes, he said a few good things but basically laid into her. Bit harsh surely?' Other watchers saw the comedic element, with one writing: 'I'm here for Peter Purves not letting sh** go.' And one person defended Peter and his fellow Blue Peter colleagues from Biddy's era, writing: '[Biddy Baxter was] hugely talented, she created children's magazine form especially in the best John Noakes/Peter Purves era. 'BUT she was also, by all accounts, a bullying tyrant to them.' And on summed it up simply: 'Peter Purves wasn't a fan then.'
