20 Restaurant Experiences That Disappeared

Buzz Feed20-05-2025
Restaurants have changed a ton over the last few decades. Everything from the food to the decor to dining culture itself has evolved in ways new generations might never realize once existed.
If you've ever wondered what restaurants used to be like, you're in luck. A few weeks ago, Tasty readers took a trip down memory lane and shared the restaurant experiences they had in "the good old days," and it's giving me a serious case of secondhand nostalgia. Here's what they had to say:
"As a kid, I remember all the adult meals came with a side salad. And most importantly, those salads came with croutons and a pack of crackers. The croutons and crackers the adults didn't want were my original appetizers!"
"The first thing that would happen once you were seated in the restaurant is that the waitress would come to the table with a glass of ice water for each diner at the table, then ask everyone for their drink order. You also got a napkin, a knife, a fork, and a spoon. Nowadays, you're lucky to get more than just a fork."
"Just the quality and taste of the food was better. Now the food looks and tastes like frozen microwave dinners."
"I would love to walk into a Pizza Hut again with the brick walls and the glass lights hanging down. It was such an atmosphere."
—ChihuahuaMom
"Oh my god, Ponderosa used to have student nights where you could go to their buffet for under $10. During college, my friend and I used to not eat the entire day, hang out with our good friend 'Mary,' and then eat there. We normally wouldn't even want to eat the next day. Great deal."
"I miss the three silver containers that came to the table that had sour cream in one container, butter in another, and chives in the other. I also miss apple dumplings from Wendy's."
"I remember going to the A&W drive-thru. They would bring your food out in roller skates, and the root beer was in real glasses: big ones for adults and little ones for kids."
—Heather, 57, Ohio
"There used to be a completely separate area labelled for truck drivers at truck stop restaurants, and they gave a truckers discount as well (and they had smoking or non-smoking sections, too). This was only in the US, though. Canada never had that."
"KFC used to have a buffet! It was amazing home-cooking-style country food like beans, biscuits, gravy, and mashed potatoes."
"I miss the way McDonald's restaurants USED to be. Many of them were often uniquely decorated to reflect the city in which they were located. When we traveled when I was younger, we would often see a McDonald's that had different decor than any other we had ever been to. And Ronald McDonald and his friends were often a colorful presence."
"Now, McDonald's restaurants all look alike, with nothing to really tell them apart from each other. I find that really sad, since the McDonald's of my childhood were COOL!"—jomariem
"It used to be easy to find a nice Chinese-style food restaurant that was not a buffet with menu items like Flaming PuPu Platter, Happy Family, Phoenix and Dragon, and an extensive drink menu. You would all order one dish apiece, which you could share with your dinner mates."
"Personally, I miss restaurants with crayons and coloring page menus or other little games for kids. A lot less annoying to see kids busy with those, instead of on a tablet without headphones."
—sportypear867
"The Little Caesars in Kmart is the only time Little Caesars has been good. It must have been something special in those little kitchens."
"If they brought back an old video game that takes one quarter to play, like Centipede, Asteroids, Defender, or Pac-Man, there would be people on that machine all night long. I stopped playing them when they came out with games costing more than a quarter that only last for a couple of minutes."
"Parsley was put on plates as a garnish. It's a natural breath cleaner that you can chew on to remove any bad breath or taste from whatever you ate at dinner. I discovered that working in a Chinese restaurant. Pretty cool."
—Gerry, 72, Washington
"They used to have kale as just a salad bar decoration. It was not meant to be eaten."
"Instead of bread and butter, restaurants served WisPride cheese spread in a crock or ball covered in slivered almonds and an assortment of crackers."
"I would kill for a great salad bar. Buffets in general these days just don't hit the same."
—marvelousbubble
"I miss having real maple syrup at the table. I miss real pepperoni on my pizza. I miss my Burger King beef patty coming fresh off the flame broiler and not from a stainless steel drawer. I miss when Arby's would steam their beef sandwiches."
"I miss the lunch counters at department stores. Our dad used to take us girls to JCPenney's counter for cocoa after our Saturday morning dance lessons. My mom and I would stop into Rea & Derick (a drug store) for a cherry coke, and when we'd go to the mall with friends, we would go to the counter at McCrory and get their French fries. They were the best."
—Blinky Bo

6 months after toxic mine spill in northern Zambia, US Embassy orders personnel out of the area

LUSAKA, Zambia -- The United States Embassy in Zambia ordered all U.S. government personnel Wednesday to leave a region in the north of the country affected by a toxic spill from a Chinese-owned mine that happened six months ago. The embassy said in an alert on social media that new information revealed that 'hazardous and carcinogenic substances' including arsenic, cyanide, uranium and other heavy metals had polluted a major river system flowing through the town of Chambishi and the nearby city of Kitwe, and had possibly become airborne, following an accident at the mine in February. The embassy didn't immediately say how many U.S. government personnel were in the copper mining area. It also advised other U.S. citizens in the area to take precautions against exposure to harmful heavy metal contamination in water and food. Around 700,000 people live in Kitwe, one of Zambia's biggest cities and a hub for international mining companies. Environmentalists and others raised concerns over the extent of the damage months ago following the spill at the mine run by Sino-Metals Leach Zambia, a division of China's state-owned China Nonferrous Metal Mining group. China is the dominant player in copper mining in Zambia, which is one of the world's biggest producers. The spill happened when a tailings dam that holds acidic and heavy metals waste from the mine collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia, resulting in some 50 million liters (13.2 million gallons) of toxic materials flowing into the Kafue River system. Within days of the spill, dead fish could be seen up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) downstream, raising fears that the contamination could affect millions living along the Kafue River, which runs for 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) through the heart of the southern African country. Sino-Metals apologized and committed to help with cleanup efforts, which included the Zambian Air Force dumping hundreds of tons of lime into the river in an attempt to counteract the acidic waste.

Russia and China's Navies Hold Submarine Rescue Drills

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Russian and Chinese navies have conducted simulated submarine rescue operations as part of a bilateral war game, after which they commenced a joint patrol in the Western Pacific. Newsweek has emailed the Russian and Chinese defense ministries for further comment. Why It Matters Russia and China have formed a quasi-alliance to challenge their mutual rival, the United States, and are pushing for closer military cooperation. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies' ChinaPower project, more than half of the 113 military exercises involving Moscow and Beijing since their first in 2003 have occurred in the past six years. The submarine rescue drill comes as both Russia and China bolster their underwater forces. Russia has modernized a Far Eastern naval base to homeport nuclear-powered submarines, while China—operator of the world's largest navy by hull count—is expanding its fleet through the integration of new technologies and the growth of its shipbuilding capacity. What To Know Citing the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Tass news agency reported on Tuesday that Russia and China each deployed a naval rescue vessel, an underwater rescue vehicle, and a diesel-electric submarine to simulate rescuing the crew of a damaged submarine on the sea floor. Rescue vessels of the RuNAVY and the PLAN practiced the task of rescuing the crew of a conditionally damaged submarine lying on the ground. Type 927 submarine support ship "Xihu" («LR-7»)➡️🇷🇺Sub. Pr. 21300 rescue vessel "Igor Belousov"(DSRV«АС-40»)➡️🇨🇳 — Massimo Frantarelli (@MrFrantarelli) August 5, 2025 According to the report, both participating units took turns conducting the rescue simulation in the designated area of the Peter the Great Gulf, near Vladivostok in Russia's Far East. The Chinese military's media outlet, the People's Liberation Army Daily, revealed that after locating the Russian submarine in mock distress, CNS Xihu, a Chinese rescue ship, deployed its submersible to dock with the submarine in a simulated rescue. Wang Yunfei, a Chinese military expert, told China's Global Times that the participation of submarines in the exercise shows the deepening military ties between China and Russia, as much submarine data—including noise characteristics—is considered classified. The drill was part of the larger Joint Sea 2025 exercise, held near Vladivostok from Friday to Tuesday, according to statements from both sides. It aimed to improve joint search-and-rescue operations, rehearse anti-submarine warfare tactics, and operate air defense systems. Russian Defense Ministry Press Service photo via AP Following the conclusion of the naval war game, the Russian and Chinese navies proceeded with a maritime joint patrol in the Western Pacific on Wednesday, China Central Television reported. However, the exact patrol area has yet to be officially announced by either side. What People Are Saying Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China's Defense Ministry, said at a press conference on July 30: "[Exercise Joint Sea 2025] is an arrangement within the annual cooperation plan between the Chinese and Russian militaries. It is not targeted at any third party, nor is it related to the current international and regional situation." The Center for Strategic and International Studies' ChinaPower project commented in a report on July 17: "Unlike military aid and arms sales, which have waxed and waned over the decades, joint exercises are a newer and thriving element of China-Russia military ties and a driver behind the strengthening of China-Russia relations in recent years." What Happens Next It remains to be seen whether the Russian and Chinese navies will stage a show of force during their joint patrol. This comes as the U.S., along with its allies, has deployed four warships capable of operating F-35 stealth jets in the Western Pacific for an exercise.

Top-10 burgers list deals blow to McDonald's, Burger King

Which fast-food chain has the best hamburger has no definitive answer. Some people love the familiarity of a Burger King Whopper or McDonald's Big Mac while others swear by regional favorites by In-N-Out Burger, Culver's, or Five Guys. There's no real correct answer here as taste is subjective and what people expect from a hamburger can vary, but USA Today did its best to solve the problem. "USA TODAY 10Best editors and a panel of burger lovers teamed up to find the tastiest picks on the menu. Then, readers stepped in to vote for the best of the best," the newspaper shared on its 10Best website. The results will likely spark endless water-cooler debate: 10: Double Char from Habit Burger & Grill (They took first place in 2024)9:Papa Burger from A&W 8: Jumbo Jack Cheeseburger from Jack in the Box7: Double-Double from In-N-Out Burger6: ButterBurger Cheese, Double from Culver's5: Cheeseburger from Five Guys4: ShackBurger from Shake Shack3: Freddy's Original Double from Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers2: Whopper from Burger King1: Double Meat Whataburger from Whataburger The results are especially embarrassing for McDonald's (MCD) because the chain has gone through a multi-year process to improve its burgers. That's something the chain bragged about in a press release: "Our chefs have been cooking up small but tasty improvements to the Big Mac sandwich, McDouble burger and our classic Cheeseburger, Double Cheeseburger and Hamburger – and we can't wait for fans across the U.S. to get a taste. The magic is in the details: Softer, pillowy buns that are freshly toasted to a golden brown Perfectly melted cheese that will make you want to savor every last bit off the wrapper Juicier, caramelized flavor from adding white onions to the patties while they're still on the grill Even more of everyone's favorite Big Mac sauce, bringing more tangy sweetness in every Big Mac bite Those efforts may have helped the chain sell more burgers, but it did not crack the top-10 list. Related: Burger King CEO shares key news on the chain's future Still, McDonald's seems happy with its efforts. "We found that small changes, like tweaking our process to get hotter, meltier cheese and adjusting our grill settings for a better sear, added up to a big difference in making our burgers more flavorful than ever," shared McDonald's Senior Culinary Innovation Director Chad Schafer. While it wasn't the winner, Burger King executives are likely happy that The Whopper made the list. Restaurant Brands International (QSR) CEO Josh Kobza talked about his chain's iconic burger during its second-quarter 2024 earnings call. "Recent menu initiatives, such as the Adams Family Menu, featuring Wednesday's Whopper, the Million Dollar Whopper campaign and the Melts platform have reinforced that guests crave innovation and high quality food at a great price," he said. Melts were a variant on The Whopper which have proved popular both in a burger and a breakfast variant. He clearly sees The Whopper as a pillar of the company's success. "For 2025, we'll continue leading into our key differentiators of Flame Grilling, the Whopper, and 'Have it Your Way,' while enhancing quality and consistency through menu renovation and operational improvements," he added. Kobza believes The Whopper is something the company can keep coming back to. "You'll also see us focus on the Whopper again. We had some very successful activations, things like the Million Dollar Whoppers where we had guest created versions of the Whopper that really appealed to guests and I think puts the Whopper in the right place as a premium product. So you should expect to see more Whopper innovation in 2025," he added. Burger King's Whopper ranked No. 2 on USA Today's best burger list McDonald's Big Mac didn't make the top 10 - despite recent upgrades BK is doubling down on Whopper innovation for 2025 The fast food burger battle is heating up and so is the value Burger & Grill took the top spot two years in a row.
