Henderson veteran graduates with two degrees at 60
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) announces a 60-year-old Henderson Navy veteran will soon graduate from its institution with two degrees.
UTA says John Shirley is a Navy veteran who has overcome several obstacles, including a cancer diagnosis and homelessness, in achieving his educational dreams. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for eight years, including three on active duty in the late 1980s aboard the USS Cochrane. After leaving the military, Shirley spent the next couple of decades working a variety of jobs, primarily as an electrician, while also facing serious medical challenges, including a diagnosis of colon cancer.

The university says following six surgeries and with his cancer in remission, Shirley made the decision in November 2021 to pack up and move to Dallas, Texas. He briefly stayed at a homeless shelter in South Dallas, before landing a job. However, he believed a college degree was the key to a better life. In August 2022, he enrolled at UTA, and on May 9 he will walk across the graduation stage at Globe Life Field in Arlington as a double major, earning bachelor's degrees in real estate and finance. UTA says since Shirley is now holding two degrees, Shirley is exploring opportunities with major financial institutions and even considering starting his own real estate company.
'As far as I know, I'll be the first one in my family to graduate with a bachelor's degree. It means everything,' Shirley said. 'It's a major life accomplishment. Education is always a pathway to a better life. Being around younger students helps me feel young again. It's encouraging to see others pushing through similar struggles. My message to anyone considering going back to college—if I can make it, they can make it.'

HCS announces appointment of 2 assistant superintendents
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Hopkins County Schools (HCS) has announced the appointment of two new assistant superintendents for the district. HCS says the two new appointments include a current district administrator and another with 'deep ties' to the district. Dr. Ann Love, district director of human resources, and Jason Clark, most recently an assistant superintendent in Caldwell County, will start their new positions on July 1. HCS officials say Clark earned a Master of Arts in Education in School Administration, a second Master of Arts in Education, and a Bachelor of Science in Teaching from University of Southern Indiana. He also holds a Certification for School Superintendent. UE receives $33K in grants for visual arts and student experience HCS says Dr. Love has served as HCS director of HR since 2018. She has a 27-year career in education, all in Hopkins County Schools. She previously was principal of Grapevine Elementary School and instructional leader and teacher at Pride Elementary School. According to HCS, Dr. Love holds a Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership from Oakland City University; a Master of Arts in School Administration from Murray State University; a Rank 1 in General Education and Master of Arts in K-12 Education, both from Indiana Wesleyan University; and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University. HMP&L launches new outage map, reporting system
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Henderson Municipal Power and Light (HMP&L) has launched a new way for customers to report outages and stay informed when the power goes out. Officials say the system, called Hometown Grid, requires no app or login. Customers can report an outage at any time by texting or calling 888-579-2726. The system automatically confirms the report and asks a few quick follow-up questions to help utility crews pinpoint the issue. Outages are shown on a public map in real time, so residents can see where issues are occurring and follow the progress as updates come in.
