May gardening jobs
The Sun's Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the tasks you need to crack on with in May.
GARDEN growth can go from nought to ninety in May, depending on the weather. The last UK frosts are generally seen at the beginning of the month, so all of a sudden there's so much more to do and grow.
Plant out dahlia tubers
It's a joy to finally plant out your dahlia tubers. Remember how big they can get - and space accordingly - anything up to half a metre apart.
It's a good idea to put your support stakes in now instead of trying to work around them.
And make sure you include lots of well rotted manure or decent compost to feed it and then mulch to keep it moist and suppress weeds. They generally start blooming in July.
Final feed to Spring flowers
You can give a cheeky feed to all your remaining tulips and daffodils.
Although the majority of bulbs aren't guaranteed to come back year after year any more, as long as you've left them to die back naturally there's a good chance they'll have stored enough energy to come back again. Tomato feed is fine.
Tie up climbers
Your clematis, honeysuckle and rambling roses should be well on their way by now - try to use plastic free string to tie them back into their support, or tuck them round each other to make sure they don't sprout off in crazy directions.
Feed the lawn
It's not too late to give your lawn a good feed.
Whether you use granular or liquid, it can give it a good boost to see it through the harsher summer months.
While mowing, don't go too low with your cut length yet and never take more than a third off the grass height.
Get creative
It's also time to get creative with hanging baskets and pots.
Trailing pelargoniums, which a lot of people call geraniums, and Begonias are a good, low cost way of getting lovely returning blooms throughout the summer in your baskets.
And pots can be planted with spring bulbs.
Don't forget the greenhouse!
Give your greenhouse a good tidy and clean the glass inside and out.
The improved light will help plants grow quicker inside and tidying is good for the soul.
You can just use a household white wine vinegar and water solution - or even neat if you're feeling spendy - which gives a really good shine.
It works as a hot-air blower which gets three jobs done as one single gadget.
On the Aldi website it states: "Grab yourself a multi-functional hot-air blower which performs as a weeder, BBQ lighter and hot air gun for removing paint and varnish to conquer all those garden tasks this year.
For those looking for a slightly swankier version, B&Q has a weed killer on their site for £38.99.
This Electric Weed Burner & Killer heats up air and channels it onto unwanted shrubs.

Morrisons teetering as UK's fifth-largest supermarket

Beleaguered Morrisons could lose its place as the UK's fifth biggest supermarket when industry figures are published this week. The Bradford-based retailer has already been elbowed out of the top four by discounter Aldi and is now close to being overtaken by cut-price Lidl too. Britain's supermarket sector – where Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons previously formed the big four players – has been transformed by the German-owned brands. The pair have offered an alternative for increasingly cost-conscious consumers worried about rising bills. Industry research group Worldpanel will provide latest figures on the grocery market tomorrow, that could see Lidl clinch the number five spot. Morrisons' boss Rami Baitieh has been attempting to revive the business after its fortunes slumped following its takeover by private equity.

Dunelm's plug-in wall lights 'look way more expensive' and 'add a premium feel'

Shoppers have praised how easy the lights are to install Dunelm customers have been singing the praises of a plug-in wall light that doesn't need an electrician to install. The retailer's range of lamps that simply need a plug socket nearby to get up and running are proving extremely popular, with buyers praising both the look and ease of getting them set up. One of the them with an extremely high rating is the Churchgate Harby Plug In Wall Light that's priced at £40. The stylish light is designed with a white ceramic glazed head, and finished in an antique gold metal and complete with a white twisted cable. For those concerned about having a cable on show, after all that's traditionally avoided, this particular one is designed in such a way that it's made to look stylish and natural, not like an ugly wire drooping down. It is worth noting that a bulb is not included, so that will add a bit extra on top. Dunelm has lots to choose from, including the Lois Globe LED Dimmable Bulb (£8), while fancier options include the Status Spiral Filament Bumpy Bulb (£22). Amazon also stocks the £55.89 KEESFU Plug in Wall Lights. These particular lights have an industrial design and come in a pair, so they cost a more affordable £28 each. The Amazon lights also have an adjustable height option which is a nice added feature. B&Q also has options like the Harbour Studio Vara Plug-in LED Wall light priced at £37. This features an antique brass finish that B&Q says "adds a touch of vintage charm to your space". The Dunelm Churchgate light has averaged 4.7 out of 5 from more than 150 reviews to date. One said: "Beautiful Lights, look way more expensive. Thoroughly recommend these." Another continued: "Looks lovely, good quality and easy to install. Would recommend." A third went on: "Amazing quality and really adds a premium feel to the bedside. Added these to a room refresh for a beachy look and feel and the quality is great. We've had lovely comments already and love the look." Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, there were a couple of drawbacks highlighted. One such issue mentioned: "Lovely lamps, look more expensive than they are. My one gripe is the switch is a horrible cheap looking plastic one so you have to sort of hide it behind the lamp." Another noted that the cable was "very kinked".
