Cardiff: Vulnerable children's details at risk in data breach
A council document stated "a failure in cyber security results in a data breach and therefore a potential safeguarding risk to children" and said the situation had been escalated in January of this year.The council's director of children's services, Deborah Driffield, mentioned the data breach while presenting an update on risk management to committee members.She said: "[There are] some issues around cyber security."We have had a data breach that we are currently managing and drawing up... new arrangements in relation to this world of people stealing data and sharing it on the dark web and trying to understand how we can mitigate against that."That is a fairly new area for us, but we have shared the risks there and certainly are working with the Welsh government and Data Cymru and all of the other… local authorities on that."The council document also stated work had taken place with the national cyber security team and risk assessments were being undertaken, with an action plan is under development.The failure affected Data Cymru, which is a Welsh local government company with a board of directors elected by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) that supports councils and their partners to collect data.

Body found in sea off Welsh coast after major search operation
The body of a man has been found near a Welsh beach following a major search operation. Dyfed-Powys Police told BBC Wales officers were called to the Manorbier area in Pembrokeshire at around 11am on Friday. It follows concerns for the welfare of a person. A spokesman for the force said: "Sadly, a body of a man was found during the search." The force said enquiries are being made to establish what happened. The search saw the Tenby all-weather and inshore lifeboats and a Coastguard helicopter deployed.

Hero uncle drowns saving the lives of young nieces at Welsh waterfall
A shopkeeper tragically drowned at a Welsh waterfall after he went into the water to save the lives of his young nieces. A coroner has ruled the death of 27-year-old Mohananeethan "Mohan" Muruganantharajah, 27, an accident when he died at Bannau Brycheiniog, or the Brecon Beacons. Mr Muruganantharajah - a qualified pilot who ran an off-licence in Swansea - visited the Sgwd y Pannwr waterfall at Ystradfellte with his extended family on September 1, 2023, Pontypridd coroner's court heard. Coroner Patricia Morgan said: "The purpose of the visit was to walk and enjoy the scenery, reports WalesOnline. "When arriving at the waterfall, a number of members of his family decided to enter the water as the weather was pleasant. "Due to a number of Mohananeethan's family getting into some difficulty, he assisted them to safety. However, sadly Mohananeethan was pulled under the water and did not resurface. "Emergency services attended but were unable to rescue Mohananeethan. He was recovered from the water on Saturday, September 2, 2023, when he was declared deceased." The court previously heard the two children rescued by Sri Lankan-born Mr Muruganantharajah were his nieces. After helping them to safety he became stuck under a ledge. In her conclusion Ms Morgan recorded the death as an accident. A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said at the time: "We were called to Sgwd y Pannwr waterfall, Ystradfellte, at approximately 4.40pm on Friday, September 1, to a report of a man having gone into the water to rescue two children and not come out. "A multi-agency response was commenced with representation from the police, fire service, mountain rescue, HART (hazardous area response team) and both the UK Air Rescue Team and the Wales Air Ambulance landing their aircrafts nearby. "At shortly after 7pm the fire service located the body of 27-year-old Mohananeethan Muruganantharaja in the water with an underwater camera. "Unfortunately, due to conditions at the site recovery was not possible that evening, and specialist divers were brought in the following morning. His family is being supported by specialist officers."

The worst speeding drivers, and roads, in Gwent revealed
Gwent Police issued more than 35,000 Notices of Intended Prosecution (NIPs) for speeding offences in a year, with the number of offences increasing by 85 per cent compared to two years ago. Legal Expert obtained the data, which showed that 35,112 people were informed they had exceeded the speed limit in the year ending March 2025. The number of NIPs issued has increased by almost 5,000 compared to the 30,437 sent out in 2023/24, with an 85 per cent surge in offences compared to two years ago. Speeding drivers receive a minimum of three points on their licence, with 12 points within three years resulting in disqualification from driving. The fixed penalty for speeding is £100, resulting in a potential penalty total of £3,511,200 in 2024/25. However, many NIPs did not lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice. The top 20 roads for speeding offences in Gwent have been identified. A constant stream of drivers on Lower Race, Pontypool, received NIPs, with 4,064 notices issued, averaging around 11 per day. The Newport stretch of the M4 appears nine times in the top 20, including seven of the worst 10 roads. The eastbound section of the motorway from Junction 25 to Junction 24 had the highest number of offences, with 2,953 drivers issued with NIPs. The A48 Southern Distribution Road, which topped last year's list, is absent from this year's top 20. The worst speeding offenders have also been revealed, with the highest speeds recorded between Junctions 26 and 25A on the M4, with one driver clocked at a massive 118mph. Another offender was caught travelling at a staggering 111mph on Lower Race, almost three times the 40mph speed limit. GoSafe said: "Excessive speed is one of the largest contributory factors to collisions on our roads. "Higher speed collisions often means a higher severity and a devastating impact on families. "GoSafe will continue to use the '4E' method to improve road safety: engineering, education, engagement, and enforcement. "Enforcement is always the last option and is considered where the risk to people is highest. "We'll continue to use these methods to reduce the number of people killed or injured on Welsh roads." Gwent Police declined to comment.
