Jury urged to clear Charles Hanson after claim his wife lied to ‘build' her case

Independent27-02-2025

A jury has been urged to acquit TV auctioneer Charles Hanson after hearing defence claims that his wife had used the criminal courts as an extension of her 'vindictive' divorce battle.
A three-week trial at Derby Crown Court has heard allegations that Hanson put his wife Rebecca in a headlock while she was pregnant with a baby she later lost, repeatedly 'grabbed' her, locked her in a hotel room, pushed her, and scratched her as she tried to snatch a mobile phone.
The Crown claims WhatsApp messages sent by Hanson to his wife amount to a 'set of confessions' to the charges.
In his closing speech to jurors on Wednesday, Crown counsel Stephen Kemp said the messages, including one in which Hanson promised to never again 'lay a finger' on his wife, provide a clear picture of the couple's relationship.
Hanson – who has appeared on TV shows including Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip – denies charges of controlling or coercive behaviour between 2015 and 2023, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating.
He told the court he was 'almost a slave' to his wife, who left him 'a beaten and broken man' by controlling him.
His lawyer Sasha Wass KC claimed Mrs Hanson 'was not controlled in any sense of the word' and was instead unstable and unhappy and 'felt resentful and hard done by' at her husband's work commitments before their marriage 'imploded' in 2023.
Ms Wass, addressing jurors on Thursday, asked them to consider whether the incident involving an alleged headlock – which Hanson claims was simply a hug – was 'a real incident' which Mrs Hanson had distorted to 'build up a false case' against her husband.
The defence KC said of the incident, which took place in 2012 and is not part of the charges: 'Putting it shortly, if she is capable of lying about that, she is capable of lying about anything.'
Another alleged example of controlling behaviour – a threat to throw embers from a fire – was 'rubbish', while another in which Mrs Hanson had tried to grab her husband's phone was a 'family row' which 'really should not find itself in the criminal courts at all', Ms Wass said.
By the middle of May 2023, she added, Mrs Hanson was 'desperate to leave and get Charles out of the house', while he was trying to save his marriage.
Ms Wass alleged that Mrs Hanson, who married the defendant in 2010, had been 'vindictive' towards him and had 'capitalised' on the details of visits to Relate to make distorted allegations of 13 incidents of violence or controlling behaviour.
The lawyer told the seven women and five men on the jury: 'The entirety of the case rests on the testimony of Rebecca Hanson. There is nothing else. You have to be sure that she is reliable, accurate and truthful.
'The reality, I suggest, is that Rebecca Hanson is none of those things and she has used this court, a criminal court, as an extension of her divorce battle.
'She has not hesitated to lie.
'There is no way that Rebecca Hanson was coercively controlled.
'This is a criminal court with criminal standards (of proof) and I suggest that Rebecca Hanson has dismally failed to satisfy the standard that is required that Charles has committed any criminal offences whatsoever, and invite you to acquit him of all the charges.'
Mr Kemp has alleged that the account given to the court by 46-year-old Hanson, of Ashbourne Road in Mackworth, Derby, 'stretched credulity beyond any reasonable limit'.
Judge Martin Hurst is summing up the evidence to the jurors and has told them they will not be under any time pressure to reach verdicts.

Crook led police on 100mph Tay Bridge chase after ram-raid wrecking spree across Tayside and Fife

Businesses across Tayside and Fife were ram-raided by a crook who later led police on a 100mph car chase from Glenrothes to Dundee. A stinger was deployed after the Kia Rio blitzed across the Tay Road Bridge on the opposite carriageway. Property and cash worth more than £42,000 was either stolen or damaged after a gang smashed their way into small firms over a nine-day period last year. Ryan Paul Robertson, 24, has now been jailed after he was identified on CCTV footage. Dundee Sheriff Court was told how car garages, food trucks and a cycle shop were all targeted in September 2024. One business owner in Kirriemuir estimated a five-figure sum of damage was caused at his company as Robertson fled with just £40 in cash. Diagnostic equipment, wheel nut guns and an electric grinder – which the Crown said was worth around £13,600 – was stolen when Robertson raided Bob's Mechanical Repairs in Birnam. CCTV clocked Robertson arrive in the Kia Rio at around 3.20am before breaking through the lower half of the office door and leaving. Days later, Autosales in Kirriemuir had a car wash machine damaged, with Robertson only managing to nab £40 in the brazen break-in. Owner Barrie Ewart previously told The Courier: 'I'm pretty horrified by how desperate people are to go to lengths like this for a few pounds.' The court heard how Robertson and others tried to force the access panel off the pressure washer before using a pick-up truck to reverse into it and knock it over. Footage picked up Robertson driving towards the Eastport Garage in Newburgh before kicking the door and smashing the window. Prosecutor Emma Farmer said: 'At around 3.25am, the manager received a call from the alarm company that several sensors had been activated. 'She and her husband attended immediately and observed a large hole in the window. 'Police attended and the manager entered the shop and found the till open and empty. 'The key had been left in the lock of the till and £118 was missing.' Three electronic bicycles worth £13,697 were stolen from the Strathmore Cycle Hub in Coupar Angus, with £207 of cash taken after a break-in at Box Tacos in Guardbridge. Money was also taken from Got the Munch in Perth and Mad Macs Snacks in Glenrothes. Robertson was brought to justice after quick-thinking police spotted the Kia Rio that was linked to the raids. The car was driving in a normal and safe manner on the A92 northbound from Glenrothes until blue lights were activated by officers at around 2am. 'Mr Robertson began to drive on the opposing carriageway in excess of the speed limit,' Ms Farmer said. 'As the A92 extended into a rural setting after Freuchie, Mr Robertson continued to drive at speeds up to 100mph on the opposing carriageway while turning his lights off intermittently. 'As the pursuit passed Ladybank, he braked sharply and turned left towards Charlottetown, which is a narrow country road.' Robertson slammed on the brakes, reversed and rammed into the police car before speeding back onto the A92. The fiscal depute said: 'Officers, who were still in pursuit, saw him driving on the opposing carriageway along the dual carriageway prior to the Tay Bridge. 'He entered the Tay Bridge and travelled the entire length of the bridge on the opposing carriageway into oncoming traffic at speeds reaching 90mph. 'At about 2.30am, his vehicle was stung using a police tyre deflation device on the Tay Bridge.' Police used tactical contact when Robertson's car was immobilised after the rear wheel bent against the kerb. The determined crook was chased on foot all the way to the Wellgate Shopping Centre before eventually being handcuffed and remanded in custody. Robertson pled guilty to being responsible for the break-ins, the reset and theft of two cars, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, stealing property from unlocked cars, driving without insurance and driving dangerously between September 6 and 29 in Dundee, Angus, Perth, Perthshire and Fife. Solicitor Kevin Hampton said previous offender Robertson accepted a jail term was inevitable. 'Your offending has not been isolated to one area,' Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith told Robertson. 'It's quite clear that you and others that were involved were driving around Dundee, Fife and Perthshire identifying soft targets that security would be easily overcome and take small sums of money. 'You reversed into a power washer causing £12,000 of damage in order to get £40 of cash. 'A business like that could go under and those that run that business could lose their livelihoods and their homes for the sake of you getting £40.' Robertson was sentenced to two years in prison which was backdated to September 30 2024. He was also disqualified from driving for two years and four months.

The court heard that Meldrum in a white Skoda Octavia was involved in a serious road traffic collision on March 23 this year. CCTV inquiries then took place, which showed that Meldrum drove on a number of occasions between the dates specified, which included two on the same day. Sentence for Meldrum's latest matter was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Mary Shields.

The Firm: controversial fly-on-wall legal doc is back

Episode two finds the solicitor and campaigner set his sights on abolishing Crown immunity laws which prevent institutions such as the Scottish Prison Service being held criminally responsible for deaths in custody. The final episode focuses on several asylum cases being handled by The Firm's immigration team, including that of a Namibian woman who came to Scotland to claim asylum based on her sexuality and the domestic violence she faced in Namibia. The press release for The Firm says it promises 'a unique and unfiltered insight into all the tactical manoeuvres, setbacks, controversies and battles involved in lengthy legal proceedings, as well as highlighting Aamer and his team's personal motivations for taking on such challenging and unrelenting work'. The new series, narrated by Gail Porter and produced by STV Studios Factual, is a follow-up to The Firm, which aired on BBC Scotland in 2023 and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The first series attracted criticism for its blend of serious legal matters and light-hearted office politics. Review: Whose terrible idea was this? Aamer Anwar said: 'This series will show you the families we are honoured to work with, who inspire us, who symbolise what justice should be about, not a gentleman's club, not the vanity of wigs and gowns, but ordinary people who demand justice as a right and not a privilege. No lawyer should ever be afraid to raise their voice for the truth and I hope The Firm shows that is exactly what we fight to do.' The Firm launches on BBC Scotland at 9pm on Tuesday 17 June, with all episodes on BBC iPlayer the same day.
