KUCHING (May 21): Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong insisted she was not making a mountain out of a molehill over Affin Bank's depiction of the wrong hornbill on its Kenyalang Card, calling it a serious misrepresentation of Sarawak's identity.
Speaking during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, she criticised the bank for featuring the Great Hornbill instead of the Rhinoceros Hornbill – Sarawak's official state bird – on a card launched by the Premier and marketed exclusively for Sarawakians.
'This is not a trivial issue – it distorts Sarawak's heritage and is an insult to our people,' she said.
Yong pointed out that the Great Hornbill is not native to Sarawak and cited local zoologist Jason Teo, who confirmed the bird depicted is indeed the wrong species.
She further revealed that the image used was not custom-designed, but lifted from a stock photo website without any Sarawakian input or cultural consideration.
'Affin Bank claiming it as a 'creative tribute' is misleading and disrespectful,' she said.
Adding on, Yong criticised the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders for staying silent, saying their lack of response reflects a disconnect from Sarawakian values.
She also took aim at Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng for making personal attacks rather than addressing the core issue.
In view of this, she urged the Sarawak government to use its 31.25 per cent stake in Affin Bank to withdraw the current card and redesign it with the correct hornbill.
'They have made profits, so don't tell us there is no budget to fix this,' she said.
Having said that, Yong expressed sympathy for the Sarawak Tourism Board, saying the misstep undermines years of work to promote Sarawak's identity.
She also criticised Tourism Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim for dismissing the matter, calling his remarks 'damaging and tone-deaf'.
'I wouldn't have raised this issue if the card hadn't been marketed as a symbol of Sarawak pride – but it was,' she said, warning that leaving the error uncorrected could confuse future generations about the state's iconic bird.
Yong concluded by calling for immediate correction and a formal apology, adding that the dignity of Sarawak's identity must be upheld without compromise. Afffin Bank DUN hornbill kenyalang violet yong

Sarikei to host 2025 Sarawak-level National Day celebrations

SIBU: Sarikei will host the 2025 state-level National Day celebrations on August 30 and 31, says Sarawak's Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah. She said this year's celebration carries the theme "Malaysia Madani: People in Harmony", which underscores the importance of prioritising the people in national development, ensuring shared prosperity and fostering appreciation for cultural diversity and human values. "The National Day celebration is not merely an annual event. It is a manifestation of the spirit of struggle of past generations which must continue to be nurtured in the hearts of every citizen. The theme reminds us that true independence is when the people are protected, valued and treated with respect in all aspects of life," Fatimah said at a press conference on Monday (Aug 18). Fatimah, who is the minister in charge of the celebrations, said the two-day programme is expected to draw around 10,000 people. Highlights of the two-day event include performances by artists such as Nai Dinamik, Bob, and Zizi Kirana as well as cultural showcases and a fireworks display. On Aug 31, a Unity Walk will be held at Sarikei Stadium starting at 7am. "The event will bring together participants from all walks of life as a symbol of community strength and unity," she said. Participants will receive Unity Walk shirts but are also encouraged to wear traditional Sarawakian ethnic attire or accessories. Fatimah called on all Sarawakians to come together and enliven the celebration by flying the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, business premises and vehicles as a sign of loyalty and love for the nation.

He said its Bumiputera members were still underrepresented in its party committee structure. 'The SUPP Batu Kawah branch currently has over 3,400 members. 'With the voting age being lowered to 18 years old, the number of voters in the Batu Kawah constituency has reached nearly 40,000. Half of these total constituents are Bumiputeras, while the other half is Chinese,' he said after receiving a courtesy call from a SUPP Kuching delegation led by its chairperson Datuk Lily Yong on Saturday. He recalled that he had joined SUPP in 2006. 'Back then (in the party's formation in 1959), our forefathers with a broad vision founded a multi-racial party to united Sarawakians of all races. This has proven to be ideal and will remain valid and necessary for generations to come,' he said. Lim said the Batu Kawah branch previously had visited several other branches to foster closer ties and enhance better mutual understanding. He opined that being multi-racial was a strength of SUPP that needed to be upheld at all costs to ensure it remains robust and proactive. He hoped the branch would continue to draw in new blood and play an active role in engaging new and young voters. 'Branches should conduct frequent meetings to offer an avenue for members to get to know each other and promote unity within SUPP. 'Through mutual visits, we will be able to better understand the current situation and strengthen cooperation. Only through this way can SUPP become more relevant and see stronger representation,' he said. Bumiputera lead lim ah ted Sarawak United People's Party

SUPP will continue pushing for S'wak Cancer Centre's development, says Engkilili branch chairman

Kua Jack Seng KUCHING (Aug 18): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili branch yesterday said that Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong's attempt to stir up the issue about the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre's progress was uncalled for. Its chairman Kua Jack Seng, who is also a political secretary to the Premier, said the Sarawak government had already outlined its development plan for the centre, which had been tabled at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur. 'The necessary steps are being pursued progressively. 'Unfortunately, Violet Yong continues to shout slogans such as 'the government should announce progress' as if she were the first to discover that Sarawak has cancer patients,' he said in a statement yesterday. Kua questioned what Democratic Action Party (DAP) had done for Sarawak when it was part of the federal government back then. 'The cancer centre is indeed an urgent need. But the real question is this — when DAP was part of the federal government, what exactly did Violet Yong and her colleagues do to fight for Sarawak's healthcare facilities? 'Even when Sarawak General Hospital's (SGH) oncology department was overwhelmed and hospital beds were insufficient, where was she then? Or is this simply a case of selective amnesia?' he asked. He said the Sarawak government was already in the preparatory phase and awaiting federal funding support, as far as the proposed centre was concerned. He found it ironic that Yong insisted there should be no further delays, adding: 'Her DAP colleagues in the federal cabinet were themselves the very embodiment of delays.' Kua pointed out that Sarawakians needed builders, not political loudspeakers who repeated the same lines. 'SUPP will continue to push for the cancer centre's implementation to ensure that Sarawakians receive proper medical facilities instead of being treated to political theatrics.' On Saturday, Yong had called for an update on the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre, urging the state government to keep Sarawakians informed as the centre was a life-saving necessity, especially since the SGH's oncology unit was stretched beyond capacity.
