WhatsApp users urged to stay on high alert this week as money stealing scam resurfaces
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging services, with billions of users all over the globe. Whether it's to catch up with friends and family, or keep in the loop with changes at work, this Meta service is the go-to app for many smartphone users.
However, this service isn't just popular with everyday users, scammers and fraudsters constantly make WhatsApp a target for their crimes. With cyber crooks doing anything they can to try and steal your personal data, experts are wanting to make sure users of the popular messaging app are on high alert for any unusual messages.
Particularly, UK users are being warned about a highly popular and effective scam that frequently makes the rounds on WhatsApp. One of the easiest scams for criminals to pull off on unsuspecting victims is the infamous 'Hi mum' attack, reports the Express.
This scam starts off with a simple 'Hi mum' or 'Hi dad' message. If the user responds, then the scammer will usually start by saying that they have lost their phone and need money to buy a new one.
While many people may believe this scam is easy to spot, in the UK alone criminals have managed to steal hundreds of thousands of pounds from their victims.
According to recent stats from Santander UK, the most successful form of this scam seems to be when the fraudsters pretend to be someone's son. Pretending to be a daughter was the next most effective trick, which was followed by being a mum.
As this is such an effective scam, experts from Action Fraud have released a reminder to WhatsApp users on social media on what to do if they receive an unusual message from a 'family member'.
Posting on X, Action Fraud said: "Beware of fraudsters posing as friends or family, and claiming to need urgent financial help.
"If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person outside of WhatsApp to confirm their identity."
As well as being alert, Action Fraud is urging users to block any weird messages and report it if you believe it could be part of a wider messaging scam.
Action Fraud went on to explain: "Report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. Press and hold on the message bubble, select 'Report' and then follow the instructions.
"If you lost money as a result of the scam message, please report it to Action Fraud."
For those unsure about a message they have received, one of the easiest ways to verify the true identity of the person is to head to your contacts and phone the person who is supposedly messaging you from the number you have saved. You will quickly know if the message you received is a scam or not.
This isn't the only scam that Action Fraud is alerting social media users about. They are also urging people to stay alert when buying tickets for upcoming concerts. You are advised to make sure you are using official ticketing websites and to pay with your card instead of making bank transfers.
Scammers will also try to abuse the generosity of people by impersonating well-known charities or say they are raising money for a fake cause.
No matter what messaging service you prefer, everyone should make sure they are double checking messages they receive and reporting them if they feel like they are about to be scammed.

Mum arrested after stabbing baby to death in horror attack
Jacinta Beth Sells, 31, is accused of brutally stabbing her baby to death during a drug-fuelled rampage in front of horrified family members. A mum has been charged with murder after her seven-month old baby boy was found stabbed to death in a horrific incident in Australia. Jacinta Beth Sells, 31, was said to be under the influence of drugs when police were called to the family home in Perth, Western Australia, in the early hours of July 14. Emergency crews raced to the scene just after 3am following reports of a "family violence incident", reports the Mirror. As they entered the home they discovered the infant had suffered fatal knife wounds and Sells having been "drug affected". Sells was taken to hospital before being arrested and charged. According to ABC News, the mother appeared in court this week, where she wept as the murder charge was read out. She spent most of the hearing staring at the floor and was remanded in custody. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said emergency responders arrived at a scene that will "haunt" them for the rest of their professional lives. He added: "There would be very few cases where you would have a crime scene of such a horrific nature for our officers and for first responders involved. It's something that will most likely haunt them for the rest of their careers." It's understood other family members, including a man, a woman and a young person, were also in the house when the tragedy unfolded. The state's premier, Roger Cook, said the case was "dreadful". He added: "Our hearts go out to everyone involved in that. Obviously, there's family and friends who are impacted by the information that's coming through." He also praised the emergency workers who were faced with the harrowing scene, saying they "would have gone into that scene confronted by some very, very difficult circumstances". Sells is due to appear at Stirling Garden Magistrates Court on August 20. The heartbreaking case comes just months after another shocking child murder made headlines across Europe. Earlier this year, a teen mum was accused of stabbing her newborn baby to death before sending a horrifying video to the infant's father in France. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The baby boy's mother, aged 17, was identifiedas the main suspect after the tragic incident at a flat in Tarare, eastern France. Local reports alleged she sent footage to a man, reportedly the child's father, shortly after the killing, who then phoned the police. The Lyon public prosecutor's office has now opened an investigation into the murder of a minor under 15 years old, according to news broadcaster BFM TV. The body of the baby was reportedly found under a bed, wrapped in a sheet. Investigators believe the baby may have been stabbed with a pair of scissors, and initial examinations suggested the child had likely just been born at the time of the killing.

Man sucked into MRI machine while wearing large metal necklace dies
The man, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries but he sadly died a day after the horror incident. A man wearing a metal necklace has sadly died after being dragged into an MRI machine in a freak accident. Before an MRI scan, patients are told to remove all jewellery and piercings to remain safe because the machine generates strong magnetic fields. The tragic incident took place around 4.30pm local time on Wednesday, July 16 at the Nassau Open MRI on Old Country Road in Westbury, Nassau County police said. Local cops were told a 61-year-old man had entered an MRI room where a scan was being performed, reports the Mirror. Police said he was wearing a large metallic chain around his neck at the time of the incident which caused him to be pulled into the machine. That resulted in a "medical episode," according to police. No other details were immediately provided, reports NBC news. The man, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries but he sadly died the next day, less than 24 hours after the horror incident. It is not clear if the man was a patient at the MRI center at the time of the incident or why he entered the room. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! One witness told CBS News the man had defied orders to stay out of the room after he heard his relative screaming from inside and got concerned. MRI machines use intensely powerful magnets that can draw in metal objects, making it unsafe to bring metal of any kind near the machine. The magnetic field is always on, and even small objects can turn into projectiles. Injuries can range from minor burns and cuts to severe wounds. No details were released on the nature of the injuries to the man in Wednesday's incident. An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances, but police have said there is no criminality involved and it appears to have been an accident. The Mirror has reached out Nassau Open MRI for comment but at the time of publication they had not responded.
