PM urges governance with a sportsman's spirit
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that the players of the national cricket team were heroes, and the nation expected them to win the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the state-of-the-art renovation of Gaddafi Stadium, he expressed his joy over the completion of the stadium's renewal within 117 days.
He appreciated Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi for supervising the stadium's construction. He congratulated all PCB members and directed the chairman to reward all individuals involved in this significant achievement.
The premier remarked that after "Shehbaz Speed," it was now time for "Mohsin Speed." He also lauded the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) for its role in the stadium's up-gradation.
Shehbaz Sharif praised the national cricket team for their recent performances and expressed hope that they would become champions of the upcoming Champions Trophy. He also voiced his confidence that Pakistan would defeat India in the tournament, winning the hearts of 240 million Pakistanis.
He highlighted the importance of teamwork, not only in sports but also in governance. He stated that financial stability in the country was a result of his cabinet's collective efforts. Reflecting on the past eight months, he compared the economic crisis to the fast pace of Australian bowler Dennis Lillee's deliveries. However, he emphasized that his team of ministers remained steadfast, helping Pakistan emerge from financial difficulties.
The prime minister congratulated the nation on hosting a major international sports event in Pakistan after 29 years. He also thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for providing facilities to the construction team through the Punjab government.
The prime minister assured that the government would provide top-tier security arrangements for the matches, allowing cricket fans to enjoy world-class cricket.
He welcomed US Consul General Kristin Hawkins at the ceremony and expressed optimism that the US cricket team would visit Pakistan soon for international matches.
Earlier, the Prime Minister officially inaugurated the renovated stadium. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also addressed the gathering.
The event was attended by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Federal Ministers Attaullah Tarar, Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazir Tarar, Rana Tanveer, and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad, provincial ministers, senior journalists, and dignitaries from various fields.

Azhar Mahmood's contract poses major challenge for PCB
Azhar Mahmood's contract has become a major hurdle for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as terminating him before the end of the agreement would require paying him six months' salary. As a result, he has been appointed interim head coach of the Test team. According to details, Azhar Mahmood was recently appointed by PCB as the interim coach of the red-ball (Test) team. The official press release had stated that he would continue until the completion of his contract. However, sources indicate that the situation is more complicated than it appears. Reportedly, PCB's white ball head coach, Mike Hesson, had outright refused to include Azhar Mahmood in his coaching setup. Sources close to Azhar claim that during the tenures of Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, he was told to continue grooming himself as an assistant coach with the promise of becoming head coach later. When that did not happen, Azhar became disappointed. At one point, he was informally told by an official that he would be given the Test team responsibility, but when no formal announcement was made, he grew concerned and even considered legal options. The main issue for PCB is a contract signed by the previous administration with Azhar Mahmood, which stipulates that early termination would require payment of six months' salary. Azhar had even offered to work with the U19 team, but that proposal was rejected. His salary is paid in US dollars, which translates to around PKR 7.5 million per month, making him one of the most expensive coaches in Pakistan's cricket history. To reduce expenses, PCB recently let go of several mentors — including WaqarYounis and SaqlainMushtaq — who were each earning around PKR 5 million monthly. However, removing Azhar before his contract expires would cost PCB tens of millions of rupees. His contract is set to end in March or April 2025, during which he will likely remain with the Test side for only two series: one against South Africa in October-November, and the other against Bangladesh in March-April. Sources also revealed that Director of High Performance, Aaqib Javed, is not impressed with Azhar's coaching and has openly voiced his concerns in meetings. Pak's WI tour may be reduced to T20Is

Photo: AFP/File Due to the West Indies Cricket Board's rigid stance, there is an increasing likelihood that the Pakistan tour will be limited to just three T20 matches. According to details, the Pakistan cricket team is scheduled to play three T20 Internationals against West Indies in the USA this August. Initially, the tour was also supposed to include three One Day Internationals (ODIs) in the Caribbean. Given the upcoming Asia Cup this year and the T20 World Cup next year, the PCB had requested the West Indies Cricket Board to convert the ODI matches into T20s. However, despite ongoing discussions, the host board went ahead and began selling tickets for both T20 and ODI matches. Further talks during the ongoing ICC meetings in Singapore failed to convince the West Indies board, which insisted on sticking to its original plan, saying, "We will not backtrack from what has already been announced." Due to this obstinacy, there's now a strong possibility that the ODI series will be scrapped, and the tour will be limited to just three T20 Internationals. An official announcement is expected soon. Sources revealed that the announcement of the Pakistan squad for the tour had been delayed due to this uncertainty. Once the situation is clarified, the squad will be announced. Most players from the recent Bangladesh tour are expected to be retained. It should be noted that the Pakistan-West Indies T20 matches are scheduled for August 1st, 3rd, and 4th. The host board had earlier announced ODI matches on August 8th, 10th, and 12th, but it will now have to issue a revised schedule.
