Pakistan never welcomed Lata Mangeshkar even though India hosted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, says Javed Akhtar: ‘This is one-way traffic'

Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar was asked if the ban on Pakistani artistes working in films was valid, as Fawad Khan's upcoming film Abir Gulaal has been banned by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Javed said that such a question had two answers and he proceeded to explain them both in an interaction with PTI on Tuesday.
The veteran lyric writer said that in the past, India has hosted many iconic Pakistani artistes like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Noor Jehan, but Pakistan has never returned the favour, which is perhaps why Lata Mangeshkar, despite recieving so much love from Pakistanis, never performed in the country as their system never made way for her to perform there. He also said that banning Pakistani artistes from the Indian space will please the fundamentalists as they want to create a wall between the two countries, so Pakistanis cannot see the liberties enjoyed by Indians.
Javed Akhtar told PTI, 'The first question should be whether we should allow the Pakistani artistes here. There are two answers, both of them are equally logical. You can toss a coin to find the right answer.' He then spoke about the many great Pakistani singers performing in India and how they received great reception here. 'It has been a one way traffic, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Noor Jahan came to India, we gave them a great reception. Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who is a poet of subcontinent, he was living in Pakistan, when he came to India during the AB Vajpayee regime, he was treated like a state head, the kind of respect given by the government,' he said.
Javed then added that even though many Pakistani poets wrote for Lata Mangeshkar, their government never honoured her in the way Indians honoured their artistes. 'I am afraid, this has never been reciprocated, I mean, I have no complain with the people of Pakistan. Big poets of Pakistan have written poems for Lata Mangeshkar. She was hands down most popular artist in India and Pakistan in the 60's and 70's, but why there was not a single performance of Lata Mangeshkar in Pakistan? We have received artistes with open arms but it was reciprocated by the establishment. I won't complain to people of Pakistan because they loved her, that's why she was so popular. They admired her but there was some blockage, the blockage was system, which I don't understand. This is one-way traffic,' he said.
Javed Akhtar then presented another point of view and said, 'If we block Pakistani artistes with a very solid logic, who are we pleasing in Pakistan? The Army and the fundamentalist? This is what they want. A tall wall between India and Pakistan. So Pakistanis cannot see what kind of freedom and liberty Indians enjoy. They want the distance, it suits them. Both these questions are equally valid.'
He said that the idea of banning Pakistani artistes must be revisited at a later moment as presently, there is no 'friendly feeling' towards them. 'At the moment, there is hardly any warmth or friendly feeling because of what has happened in Pahalgam. So this is not the time to think about it. This could be thought in better times and hopefully after some years, some sense will prevail and they will have better attitudes towards India from the establishment of Pakistan,' he said and added, 'But at the moment, this question should not be asked, not possible.'

"No Message Or Anything": Yuzvendra Chahal Reveals His Last Conversation With Ex-Wife Dhanashree Verma

Indian cricket team spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up on his relation with his ex-wife Dhanashree Verma, who is an actor-choreographer, in a recent podcast. Chahal and Dhanashree were granted divorce by the Mumbai family court in March this year, ending their five-year marriage. The duo tied the knot in December 2020 but as per their petition, they separated in June 2022. In February this year, the couple filed a joint petition before the family court seeking divorce by mutual consent. Now, Chahal has revealed that he has not texted or talked to Dhanashree for a long time now. He added that after 2024 T20 World Cup, the couple was left with formal talks only. "I had not seen her for a very long time, and then I saw her on a video call, where the lawyers spoke to us. That's it, no message or anything after that. Before the divorce, we weren't on talking terms for six to seven months. We would talk only if there was something very important; otherwise, nothing. It was like that for a while, but after the T20 World Cup, it started properly," said Chahal on Raj Shamani 's YouTube channel. When asked who started the talks of divoce between the two. Chahal said, "She brought it up at times, even I did on some occasions, and it happened one day mutually." Asked if there was any chance to work it out, Chahal said, "No, we tried enough. I tried my best." The divorce case of Chahal and Dhanashree grabbed headlines with scrutiny into both of their lives and the spinner spoke openly about his mental health struggles during the phase. Chahal made it clear that he never cheated on Dhanashree despite many rumours about him. He also said that they kept their separation a secret from the world till their divorce was finalised. "It was going on for a long while. We decided we do not want to show the people. Who knew if it did not happen. Maybe, it will become a different scenario. We were like until we reached to a point of end, we are not going to say anything. We will be like a normal couple on social media," Chahal said.

Prasidh Krishna On What Made Joe Root Angry: 'I Just Said, You Are Looking...'

Last Updated: Prasidh Krishna has revealed what he told Joe Root that led to their fiery on-field spat. Indian fast-bowler Prasidh Krishna has revealed he told England's Joe Root that he was 'looking in great shape' during the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which led to 'a lot of abuse' and an ugly on-field spat between the two. Prasidh was slammed on social media for riling up someone with as clean an image as Root, but according to the Karnataka man, even he didn't expect 'such a big reaction'. The incident happened soon after Root came to the crease in the second innings of the Test. His face turned red after the conversation, and he hit a few boundaries against Prasidh, who responded with a couple of bouncers in anger. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena didn't take long to involve himself in it, following Prasidh like a hawk from thereon. He was heard having chats with KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill, who didn't seem pleased with being asked to control the verbal attacks. 'I don't know why Rooty [reacted]," Prasidh told the BBC's Test Match Special. 'I just said, 'You're looking in great shape,' and then it turned into a lot of abuse and all of that. Later, at the press conference, Prasidh was asked if the plan was to distract the Englishman. 'That was the plan, but I didn't expect the couple of words I said to get such a big reaction from him," Prasidh said. Prasidh also conceded that Root was a legend of the game. 'That's just who I am when I'm bowling, when I'm enjoying. If it means that I have a bit of a chatter with the batter… and it does help me when I can get under the nerves of the batsman and get a reaction from them. But I love the guy that he is. He is a legend of the game and I think it is great when two people are out there wanting to do the best and be a winner at a given moment," he added. Eventually, Root got out LBW to Mohammed Siraj. England folded for 247, only 23 runs ahead of the visitors, and the third essay yielded 75/2 led by Yashasvi Jaiswal's fifty before Stumps.
