Caerphilly space for businesses and community initiatives

Y Banc, located in the former Barclays Bank on Cardiff Road, will be the new hub for creative programmes and community-driven projects.
The opening is part of a wider initiative by Caerphilly County Borough Council to transform disused spaces across the region.
The council has been working with Urban Foundry, specialists in repurposing empty spaces for community and business use, for more than a year.
They have already successfully revitalised a location on the High Street in Bargoed, allowing small businesses to test-trade, network, and access support through workshops delivered by industry experts.
Following the success in Bargoed, the initiative moved to Ffos Caerffili, where a number of workshops were held in one of the retail shipping containers.
The sessions were created to meet the needs of local businesses, covering everything from funding advice to TikTok marketing strategies.
Cynefin Caerffili CIC, a creative community-led social enterprise working to transform Caerphilly through collective cultural activity, will be the first to move into Y Banc and director Ceri Davies called Y Banc a 'real game-changer for us'.
Jamie Pritchard, deputy leader and cabinet member for prosperity, regeneration, and transformation, said: "Putting empty buildings to use in our town centres and offering opportunities for community-driven projects and businesses to flourish is a great mix and brings new opportunities to the high street.
"We want this space to be active and full of ideas."
Tara Tarapetian, director of Urban Foundry, said: "It's not just about creating a place to work – it's about creating an environment where people feel empowered to grow their ideas.
"Confidence in the high street, increased footfall, and supporting local businesses to grow the economy are all big outcomes."
The project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and will contribute to long-term regeneration efforts in the county.
There are plans to further expand the project.

Owner of TikTok famous Ron's Quality Snax speaks about retirement

Ron McClure has been serving hungry customers from all over the world for the past 34 years at Ron's Quality Snax in East Kilbride. The 74-year-old chef is now preparing to retire and sell the well-known business, located on Albion Way, due to suffering from arthritis. Ron said: 'I'm sad to say I need to give it up. I don't want to, but I don't have a choice. The problem is caused by arthritis. 'I'm alright, but my hands are my tools. I've been a chef for 60 years altogether, and my hands are now very painful and sore. 'There's no cure, but it's just one of those things you get with old age. If I could've carried on, I would have carried on until I was 90 or 100. 'I love it and I have a passion for it. I can't do any more wrapping, tapping, and making it happen. I'm going to miss it dearly.' The social media star explained that it had been his grandson's idea to bring Ron's Quality Snax onto the global platform. (Image: Colin Mearns) Ron added: 'I'm not a technophobe, but I'm rubbish with technology. I was surprised by the way TikTok took off. 'I didn't know how to do it, and my grandson knows, so he said, 'I'll show you papa'. We closed at 1pm that Saturday, we'd cleaned up, and the customers were all away. 'I cooked something, and then he put it on TikTok. My phone was dinging like mad all day. By 5pm on Saturday night, it had half a million views. 'On Sunday morning, it was over one million; it just went viral. My business had suffered greatly during COVID, and TikTok, my goodness, it helped it go up and up. 'It made a difference.' More than two years later, Ron has gained 75,000 followers on TikTok and has amassed 1.2million likes across his videos. He also created a line of merchandise featuring baseball caps and aprons with his branding. Ron told the Glasgow Times he has had customers visit from places including Australia, Texas, Manchester, and London. Just six months ago, he says, two customers from Aberdeen hired a van to come down and visit the popular snack bar. Before opening Ron's Quality Snax, Ron worked in various restaurants, hotels, and even catered for the Queen. (Image: Colin Mearns) He said: 'I started my first job as a commis chef in 1966 in a restaurant in Glasgow. I cooked for some of the Rangers players at the time; that's my claim to fame. 'I later joined the Merchant Navy as a commis chef. I left after about two years, as I met my wife and got married. 'I did catering for the Queen in 1986. Then I was the manager of Buck Rodgers, a sci-fi themed restaurant on Queen Street. 'I opened a restaurant in Bathgate called Chef's Kitchen, and the last thing I did before this was I was the operations manager for Dunkin' Donuts. 'Then I was made redundant, and I decided to open up Ron's Quality Snax. The journey has been good. 'There have been ups and downs, but the business grew and grew. I've got good staff. All seven members have been with me for a long time. 'My staff stay because I look after them and give them respect, and we all give the customers respect, that's very important. 'It's the end of an era, and I don't know what I'm going to do.'

White House joins TikTok

Donald Trump 's supporters are jazzed about the White House's new TikTok account. Republicans in Congress have warned of national security concerns with the foreign app and pushed for the U.S. to ban TikTok if it does not sell to a non-Chinese owner. And even though Trump issued an executive order during his first term on the need to address the emergency threat posed by TikTok, the president's most loyal followers are pleased with the new account. It emerged on Tuesday night with three videos within a few hours of each other, all amassing hundreds of thousands of views. More than 110,000 users followed it by Wednesday morning with thousands more following by the minute. 'White House getting on TikTok is YUGE!' Gen Z political commentator Brilyn Hollyhand wrote on X. 'Posting behind the scenes videos, speeches, and accomplishments - that's how we keep Gen Z for the GOP !' he added. Another X user called MAGA Voice with 1.2 million followers wrote: 'President Trump just launched an official White House TikTok account with the most bad[expletive] 30 second video. This is freaking epic.' The White House said in a statement to the Daily Mail that the account is meant to communicate Trump's successes to Americans directly on as 'many platforms as possible.' TikTok is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, and Republicans in Congress have repeatedly threatened a U.S. ban if it does not sell to a company without ties to the CCP. Those threats have turned out to be empty with the president acknowledging his tariffs on Beijing might make a sale even more difficult. He has extended the must-sell-by date several times , and it doesn't appear a deal will happen before the current September deadline. On January 18 this year, TikTok was removed from U.S. app stores and those with it already downloaded were met with the message: 'Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately that means you can't use TikTok for now.' The app was back up and running in the U.S. just hours later after Trump announced he extended the deadline for ByteDance's sale. 'Thanks for your patience and support,' a message on the app read for users who regained access. 'As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!' TikTok's Singaporean CEO Shou Zi Chew, who attended Trump's inauguration, posted a video praising the then-incoming president. Many Republicans are against TikTok operating in the U.S., and warn that is causes a massive security concern because the CCP has access to users' data. In his August 2020 executive order, Trump even admitted that the app could be used to track federal employees, conduct espionage and facilitate censorship or disinformation. At the time, he called the threat of Chinese-owned companies operating in the U.S. a 'national emergency.' Some on X pointed to Trump now breaking with Republican lawmakers on the matter. 'In a clear nudge to Republican members of Congress who are still on the fence, the White House has officially joined the platform that helped propel President Trump back to the White House: TIKTOK,' wrote CJ Pearson, co-chair of the GOP's Youth Advisory Council. Chinese human rights advocate Yaqiu Wang posted to X: 'American politics has become such a farce.' 'Congress nearly unanimously passed a bill requiring the sale of TikTok over national security concerns. Yet, not only has the president illegally refused to enforce it, but now the White House itself is busy posting on TikTok,' she expanded. Additionally, Mario Nawfal, who posts pro-Trump content to X, wrote: 'Trump has praised TikTok as key to energizing young voters during his 2024 win over Kamala.' 'Intelligence agencies have long warned about the app's Chinese ties,' he acknowledged.
