GM L92 Engine Teardown Reveals Its Most Destructive Weak Point
However, even the most dependable engines have their breaking points. Our favorite mechanical CSI, I Do Cars, got its hands on an L92, which came from a 2009 Yukon Denali that had reached 268,000 miles before catastrophic failure. The vehicle was abandoned and purchased with zero history, so it's high time to discover what caused its demise.
Things looked grim from the get-go. The engine had multiple holes in the block, a cracked oil pan, and was packed with carbon deposits. The spark plugs told nothing different – one was completely flattened, and the others exhibited evidence of extreme oil burning.
Internally, things only got worse. A piston had been obliterated, its connecting rod snapped, and debris had scattered throughout the oiling system and crankcase. The cylinder head showed deep pitting in the combustion chamber, and the valvetrain was bathed in varnish, clear-cut evidence of prolonged poor maintenance.
However, the most telling clue came in the form of a tiny fragment: a piece of a valve seat – a known, if uncommon, issue in GM's rectangle-port LS heads like the L92's. Once the seat dislodged, it held the valve open just long enough for the piston to strike it, shattering both and triggering a chain reaction that destroyed nearly everything inside.
So what causes valve seats to drop in the first place? Overheating. The aluminum cylinder heads and steel valve seats expand at different rates, and when temps spike – often from low coolant, poor airflow, or simply neglect – the seats can loosen. Once that happens, it's only a matter of time.
I Do Cars notes that early detection can prevent total loss, but in this case, the signs were either ignored or went unnoticed. The L92 may be a tank, but even tanks are no match when the temperature goes excessively up.

And yet, in a world where your car can now change lanes for you, Ford and others are working on a digital manual shifter for EVs. Really. So which way is driving going? Fully hands-off—or back to the tactile, analog past? Let's take a look at both roads. Lucid's self-driving moonshot, Uber's big buy-In While Tesla and Waymo continue to dominate the robotaxi conversation, Lucid's entrance into the fray isn't just about a software update. The EV maker also announced a $300 million joint venture with Uber and Nuro, aiming to deploy 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs with Level 4 autonomy by late 2026. The Lucid-Nuro-Uber team plans to launch in a major U.S. city (they haven't said which yet), joining the ranks of Waymo, which already operates fully autonomous rides in Phoenix, LA, and San Francisco, as well as Amazon's Zoox, and Cruise, which is attempting to recover after a high-profile accident and DMV suspension last year. Lucid's entry confirms the ongoing trend: Many automakers seem to believe driving might soon become something we watch, not something we do. Hyundai says goodbye to manuals—Ford says 'not so fast' Earlier in July, Hyundai officially ended production of its last manual-transmission cars, citing low demand and the need to streamline for electrification. The move wasn't shocking—manuals now account for just 1–2% of U.S. new car sales, with automatics and EVs dominating at 96–98%. And Hyundai is hardly alone; the clutch pedal has been slowly disappearing from U.S. roads for over a decade. So will the stick shift disappear forever? It appears some automakers are hedging their bets. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Ford is developing a digital, haptic-feedback 'H-pattern' shifter—a fake manual gearbox for EVs. The idea? Let drivers pretend they're shifting gears even though they aren't. It's part nostalgia, part engagement play, and part branding experiment. BMW, Toyota, and yes, even Hyundai, are all exploring similar 'manual EV experiences.' It's a peculiar about-face: Hyundai publicly says no one wants to shift gears anymore, while secretly prototyping fake ones. Why? Because while most people don't need a manual, some still want the feel of one. The emotional science of driving The Continental Mobility Study (2024) found that a majority of American drivers still see themselves as 'traditional.' One side wants to automate every inch of the driving experience. The other is doubling down on connection, feel, and driver engagement—even if that feeling is simulated. Across the Atlantic, the divide looks different. Europe remains the stronghold for manual fans, with 50–70% of new car sales in the EU and UK still coming with clutch pedals. Italy leads with ~72% manual adoption, while Germany holds at around 61%. In the UK, the landscape is shifting fast: about 50% of buyers still say they'd pick a manual—but automatic-only driving tests are becoming increasingly common. In 2024, 21% of learners opted out of learning a stick, up from just 9% five years ago. The trends do signal a push towards automatic, and eventually fully automated driving, but a not-so-silent minority is clinging to the last vestiges of hands-on driving. Rivian finds the middle lane If Lucid is racing toward autonomy and Ford is reaching into the past, Rivian might be carving out the smartest lane of all: the middle one. The adventure-focused EV company just announced a slick new navigation software update, in partnership with Google Maps and Google Cloud. The upgrade brings dynamic trip planning, off-road routing, charger location intel, and real-time traffic—all integrated into Rivian's in-car OS. Digital Trends called it a 'juicy mapping update to rival Tesla,' and it's easy to see why. But beneath the software is a deeper philosophy: Rivian isn't trying to replace drivers. It's trying to support them. Rather than removing the driver altogether or pretending they're still shifting gears, Rivian's focus is on automating the boring parts—like parking, range management, and navigating backwoods trails—while preserving the joy of real, physical driving when it matters. Why Does Cadillac's Northstar Engine Get Such A Bad Rap?
The Cadillac Northstar V8 has, let's call it, a "negative reputation." And why is this? Some of you raised your hands like an A+ student who sits at the front of the class and shouted, "Head gaskets!" Very good, you get a gold star, but it is so much more complicated than that. The real question is why head gaskets tend to blow on early Northstar V8s. The biggest issue, and the one that makes many potential secondhand owners too scared to own one, is that the fine steel threads of the torque-to-yield head bolts on early engines would strip right out of the aluminum block. Over time, galvanic corrosion would eat away at the threads, and once the bolts were stripped, the heads could pull away from the block. Coolant would then get into the cylinders, and of course, compression would drop. Aside from head bolt problems, early Northstars could also develop an oil leak because the rear main seal wears down faster than it should. As explained by 8020 Automotive, GM didn't press the main seals into the block from 1993 through 1999, but changed the design in 2000 to prevent future leaks. Speaking of '93 to '99 examples, excessive oil consumption is common thanks to piston rings that build up carbon deposits, ruining their ability to seal against the cylinder wall. New rings fixed this problem in 2000. Oh, and GM still wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory, because from 2000 to 2002, the carbon just built up inside the cylinders instead, leading to overheating. Also, valve cover gaskets can leak and drip oil onto the engine mounts, alternator, A/C compressor, and exhaust manifolds, which are not ideal places to have oil dripping. Read more: These V6 Engines Put The LS1 V8 To Shame Don't Worry, GM Fixed The Northstar's Head Bolt Issue In 2000 Or 2002 Or 2003 Or 2004 Trying to find a definitive answer on when GM finally fixed the head bolt issue is like trying to find an objective answer about who's the alien at the end of John Carpenter's "The Thing". At least we know why the Cadillac logo used to have ducks in it. Northstar Performance's Swap/Interchange page timeline shows changes made to the engine over the years, including longer head bolts introduced in 2000. However, according to a service bulletin per Wise Auto Tools (opens a PDF) in late MY2002, GM introduced fixes for the stud issue, raising the thread start height and the block bolt hole depth by 7mm. While it might seem this negates Northstar Performance's timeline, looking at that same bulletin, we see that it recommends a specific TimeSert kit for fixing 2000-2003 Northstar head bolts, then shows a table with specific bolt dimensions, implying the bolts were the same during that four-year period. According to both the service bulletin and Northstar Performance's timeline, the fine M11x1.5 bolts were replaced in 2004 with coarser M11x2.0 bolts, so it seems that was the year that GM got serious about fixing the Northstar's issues. But, go to Repairpal, and see that 2004 and 2005 Cadillac DeVilles have reports of head bolt problems anyway. Then, go to the forums, as well as the comments section on Motorweek's review of the 2006 Cadillac STS-V, and people keep referring to 2003 head bolt revisions. It's possible people are conflating the head bolt issue with the cold start engine knock problem, which was, according to the service bulletin, a condition suffered by 2000-2003 Northstars. The Northstar Was Done Dirty These days, Northstar Performance offers a kit to permanently repair the head studs in your old Northstar and, as The Car Wizard explained, makes the Northstar totally reliable, though the fix is expensive and time-consuming. Can you imagine doing this fix on a Mosler Cadillac Twinstar with two Northstars? Shudder. You could avoid the 4.6-liter Northstar issues entirely by getting one of the two cool factory supercharged Northstar Caddies: The XLR-V or the STS-V. Watch the STS-V Motorweek review, even if for no other reason than to hear John Davis's perfect voice, and you'll notice that the displacement has shrunk from 4.6 to 4.4 liters, yet horsepower ballooned to 469 hp, rivaling the W211 Mercedes-AMG E55 (443 in the XLR-V). In addition to reducing the bore and decreasing compression in preparation for supercharging, the block is sand-cast instead of die-cast, the deck is semi-closed, the water jacket was improved for better coolant flow, and the head gaskets were changed over to coated multi-layer steel to handle the increased pressure. The best part? Owners report the LC3 is stout with no gasket issues, and STS-Vs are ridiculously cheap. Sure, the XLR-V has once been referred to as "the biggest disappointment in car history," but yesterday's awkward design is today's quirky and unique. Unfortunately, by the time the niche supercharged 4.4 version came out -- and the gasket issues were also largely solved for the N/A 4.6 -- the damage was done. Perhaps GM took too long to recognize and address the problem, or maybe the attention shifted to the LS as the performance V8 of choice, thanks to its durability and relative simplicity, but the Northstar was dead by 2011. C8 Corvette ZR1 Races A Lamborghini Revuelto
Read the full story on Backfire News Much has been said about the performance chops of the C8 Corvette ZR1, but watching one race a Lamborghini Revuelto is something else. After all, talk is cheap and actions speak much louder. It's time to see if the new American supercar can hold off the latest from the no doubt the C8 Corvette ZR1 is fast and capable. After all, the supercar has set a number of track records. It's no wonder, considering the twin-turbo 5.5-liter LT7 V8 produces a claimed 1,064-horsepower and 828 lb.-ft. of torque. But it's come out that GM perhaps understated the performance capabilities of the ZR1 by a smidge. After Car and Driver tested the American supercar, it concluded that the Chevy is faster than a McLaren 750S, doing 0 to 60 in 2.2 seconds, besting the factory-stated time by a tenth of a second. They also found it can do 0 to 100 in 4.5 seconds and polishes off the quarter mile in 9.5 seconds at 149 mph. Can that performance be replicated by this driver at the track, and will the Lamborghini Revuelto be able to keep up? The Italian bull is quite accomplished itself. After all, the 6.5-liter V12 engine works with three electric motors for 1,015-hp – the most any production Lamborghini or plug-in hybrid has ever made. Those three electric motors mean the Revuelto is an all-wheel-drive vehicle. Two of the motors drive the front wheels. The third is integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, helping to drive the rear wheels. That could give it an advantage launching off the line.
