BJP's Anurag Thakur urges Himachal govt to take serious action on devastation by flash floods, heavy rains
Speaking to ANI, Thakur pointed that a mass destruction has been occurred in the area and it will cost in lakhs for people to rebuild their shops and homes.
The BJP MP said, 'When you come here, you will see what a natural disaster looks like... There are many people here whose homes have been destroyed and shops devastated. In Thunag's market, where the mud was up to 12 feet high, the damage runs into lakhs. Now, people have to spend thousands to clear the mud, and setting up their shops again will cost them lakhs more. The compensation, however, is Rs 2500. What will happen in Rs 2500?'
'I urge the state government should look into this matter with great seriousness... I feel that government employees and officials need to step up their efforts... We do not want to play politics on this issue...' he added.
Thunag in Mandi district is severely affected by the torrential rains and flash floods on the night of June 30 and July 1.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for six districts of Himachal Pradesh, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, while also cautioning about continued rain activity across the state till July 20.
According to Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, moderate rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in districts including Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Mandi.
'For July 14 and 15, we expect light to moderate rainfall in most mid-hill and low-hill districts. However, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts are under Orange Alert for today due to the likelihood of heavy to heavy rainfall, and this activity will continue tomorrow as well,' Sharma said.
He further informed that for July 15, districts including Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur have been put under Orange Alert for very heavy rainfall, while Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kullu districts may witness isolated heavy rain for which a Yellow Alert has been issued.
'This spell of active monsoon is expected to continue from July 16 to July 20, during which Una, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts may receive heavy rainfall at isolated places,' said Sharma.
Discussing the seasonal rainfall trends, Sharma noted that there is an increase in monsoon rainfall above the normal.
Himachal Pradesh continues to face a grim monsoon season, with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirming a total of 98 fatalities between June 20 and July 13, 2025, across the state.
Of these, 57 deaths have been caused by rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 41 people have lost their lives in road accidents, as per the latest situation report issued at 10 am on Monday.
In addition to the human toll, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported widespread damage to essential public utilities, 208 roads remain blocked, including one national highway (NH-21 from Mandi to Kullu). And 139 Distribution Transformers (DTRs) have been disrupted and 745 water supply schemes are currently affected due to heavy rains and related damage.
As per the Cumulative Loss Report released by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), among the rain-related fatalities, 15 people died due to cloudbursts, 9 by drowning, 8 in flash floods, 4 due to snake bites, 1 each from a landslide and fire, and 19 others due to electrocution, falls, or other reasons. No deaths were reported due to lightning.
The worst-affected district is Mandi, which alone accounts for 21 of these rain-related deaths, along with 27 missing persons and extensive damage to property. (ANI)

Organised crime is Haryana's biggest industry, claims Congress MP Randeep Surjewala
Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday (July 20, 2025) termed Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also holds the Home portfolio, a 'complete failure' and demanded that he step down, alleging that 'organised crime is the biggest industry in the State today'. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on the prevailing law-and-order situation, Mr. Surjewala alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had turned Haryana, the land of the Bhagavad Gita, into the land of 'Gangs of Wasseypur', claiming that the State was ruled by 'mafias, guns, bullets and ransom' rather than by the Constitution. Asserting that crime cannot flourish without political patronage, Mr. Surjewala said the police functioned at the behest of the political leadership. Those in power, he alleged, were either 'weak', 'worthless' and 'incompetent' to govern or were offering shelter to criminal elements. 'In both cases, they should quit,' he said. Citing official figures, the former Haryana Minister claimed the deteriorating law-and-order situation was reflected not just in newspaper headlines but in official statistics. 'As per the National Crime Records Bureau, three people are murdered and five sexual offences are committed in Haryana daily. In 2024, 966 people were murdered and 16,743 crimes were committed against women, which means 46 women fell victim to these crimes every day. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 4,137 people have gone missing, most cases being related to kidnapping,' he said. Mr. Surjewala further said that during a meeting of seven Directors General of Police in February this year, the State government admitted that 80 criminal gangs — including the Lawrence, Bhau, Kaushal Chaudhary, Goldy Brar, Rana and Vikas Gulia (Dubai) gangs — were active in Haryana. Blaming part of the situation on unemployment, Mr. Surjewala claimed that police officials had stated that these gangs, operating from India and countries such as Dubai, Canada, and Australia, were recruiting unemployed youth by offering amounts ranging between ₹5,000 and ₹20,000. Mr. Surjewala, who is also the All India Congress Committee general secretary, said a report compiled by him based on press reports from nine districts indicated a 'dangerous trend'. According to him, Faridabad had recorded 41 murders so far this year, followed by 38 each in Jind and Gurugram, 25 in Panipat, 21 in Kaithal, 20 in Karnal, 18 in Kurukshetra, 15 in Yamunanagar and 11 in Sirsa. 'It was a similar situation during the Indian National Lok Dal's rule in 2005, and has now even worsened,' he said. Comparing the situation with the previous Congress government, Mr. Surjewala said that prior to 2014, headlines were about sporting achievements, rising investments in the National Capital Region and Haryana's performance in development indices. 'After the BJP formed the government under Manohar Lal, the headlines changed to reports about paper leaks, corruption in jobs and atrocities on farmers. Under Nayab Saini, we are now reading about drug and sand mafias, an unbridled bureaucracy, and criminal extortion,' he alleged. Reacting to the allegations, Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli said the police had taken strict action against criminals and the process of arrests had been expedited. He added that action would soon be taken against those issuing threats from abroad.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the BJP was under an 'illusion' of taking political advantage by creating a rift between him and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. When asked about the BJP leaders' claim that Mr. Siddaramaiah had 'insulted' his Deputy by skipping his name at the Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru on Saturday, the Chief Minister said the leaders of the saffron party were always trying to find fault where there was none. Pointing out that it was customary to take the names of only persons who were present at the function, Mr. Siddaramaiah said Mr. Shivakumar had already left the programme citing prior engagement. 'When he was not present at the programme, how does the question of insult arise?', he questioned. The BJP, which is under an 'illusion' of taking political advantage by creating a rift between the two of them, will remain under such an illusion, he added. Mr. Shivakumar, who was also present on the occasion, said he left the venue after informing the Chief Minister of his prior engagement. On his way to Bengaluru from Mysuru, Mr. Shivakumar said his convoy met with an accident, but nobody suffered any grievous injuries. The Deputy Chief Minister said he had left Mysuru early as he had to keep an appointment with an advocate. 'It was a private visit. There was no politics involved,' he said, adding that he finished his appointment and had returned to Mysuru.

I do not expect BJP to come to a public debate on development works in Karnataka: CM
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he does not expect the BJP leaders to come to a public debate on the development works in the State, in response to his invitation. When asked if he expected the BJP leaders to take part in a debate, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he had invited them several times earlier also. 'People who lie do not come,' he said, dubbing the BJP leaders as 'liars'. However, the Chief Minister said he was ready to participate in the debate if the BJP leaders came forward. The Congress government organised a convention in Vijayanagar earlier this year to mark two years of its rule in the State, he said, adding that the 'BJP's lies' about the State government were exposed with more than two lakh people participating in the programme. The State government was spending ₹52,000 crore every year on the guarantee programmes. He said the BJP, which criticises the State government, had copied its guarantee programmes in other States. GST WOES OF SMALL TRADERS With regard to complaints of small traders receiving notices from the Commercial Taxes Department for transactions through UPI, Mr. Siddaramaiah said his government will discuss the matter with the Centre and the department and will make a decision. He said Goods and Sales Tax (GST) Council does not come under the State government. However, the government will take up the matter with the Union government and discuss it with the State's Commercial Taxes Department. When asked about the invitation extended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's son and Minister for Information and Technology Nara Lokesh to companies to invest in their State following Karnataka government's decision to drop notification for land acquisition in Devanahalli, Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that no company will leave Karnataka. 'We did not say that we will not give land to investors. We will give land. No industry will leave Karnataka,' Mr. Siddaramaiah said, ruling out any capital flight from Karnataka despite the 'politics' played by Mr. Naidu and his son.
