Vigilance heat on SAD leader Bikram Majithia intensifies; judicial custody extended till August 2

Amid fears of protests by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers, the Vigilance Bureau of the Punjab Police on Saturday produced senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a Mohali court, which extended his judicial custody till August 2. Public Prosecutor Farry Sofat said, 'Majithia was produced in court after the completion of his 14-day remand. He remains lodged in New Nabha Jail, Patiala, and will be presented again on August 2.' On July 6, Majithia was sent to judicial custody for 14 days following the end of his police remand. The police arranged tight security outside the court on Saturday. The district administration, anticipating unrest, took preventive action by detaining several SAD leaders, including SAD Mohali District President Parvinder Singh Sohana, from their residences in the early hours. The Vigilance Bureau arrested Majithia on June 26 in a case registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Since then, vigilance teams have conducted multiple raids at his residences and offices in Amritsar and Majitha, and submitted details of the seizures to the court. The Vigilance Bureau has also launched a joint operation with the Special Investigation Team (SIT), targeting Majithia's alleged benami properties in Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi, including a Delhi-based Sainik Farms property. These assets, which are alleged to be illegally acquired, are estimated to be worth Rs 540 crore. Officials are also probing shell companies allegedly linked to Majithia and his family, suspected of laundering drug money. Over the last 14 days, Majithia has submitted two petitions in the Mohali court. The first one is a request for a 'change of jail barrack' and the other is a bail plea. His lawyer argued that Majithia, being a former MLA and cabinet minister, qualifies for 'Orange Category' privileges under jail rules. He demanded separate lodging from other inmates and special facilities. The court has issued a notice to the Punjab government on the matter, and the next hearing has been scheduled for July 22. June 26, 2025: Vigilance Bureau arrests Majithia. June 28: Former ED Deputy Director Niranjan Singh told Vigilance that Jagdish Bhola named Majithia during interrogation. June 29-30: Former MLAs Boni Ajnala, Dalbir Gill, and others recorded statements; a Vigilance team visited Shimla. July 1: The Narcotics Control Bureau sought records related to Majithia. July 2: Majithia remanded in police custody till July 6. July 3-4: Majithia's lawyers moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court; hearing deferred to July 8. July 6: Majithia sent to New Nabha Jail till July 19. July 8: The High Court scheduled the next hearing for July 28. July 11: Jail barrack change plea filed.

Crypto Market Booms As Ethereum Soars 70% In A Month, Trump's Company Reaps Massive Gains

Last Updated: Currently, Ethereum is trading at $3,538.23, while Bitcoin stands at $118,071.65. In the last 24 hours alone, Ethereum has seen institutional purchases worth $5 million News18 There's a surge of activity in the cryptocurrency market as the total market capitalisation has crossed the $4 trillion mark for the first time ever. After a strong rally in Bitcoin, Ethereum is now making headlines with an impressive rise. The world's second-largest cryptocurrency has jumped 20% in just five days and a whopping 70% over the past month. Its market cap has swelled by $150 billion in less than 30 days. US President Donald Trump's company, World Liberty Financial, has reportedly made significant investments in Ethereum. With the latest price rally, Trump is said to have gained enormously from the rise. Currently, Ethereum is trading at $3,538.23, while Bitcoin stands at $118,071.65. In the last 24 hours alone, Ethereum has seen institutional purchases worth $5 million. The GENIUS Act Fuels the Rally The driving force behind this crypto boost is a historic law passed in the United States, the GENIUS Act, which was signed by President Trump last Friday. The legislation has sparked fresh enthusiasm and confidence among investors, pushing 'Crypto Week' into high gear. Cryptocurrencies are now being seen as more than just a risky or speculative investment. So far in July, Bitcoin funds have attracted $5.5 billion (Rs 46,750 crores), while Ethereum ETFs have seen investments worth $2.9 billion (Rs 24,650 crores). According to sources, Trump's company has recently invested around $10 million (Rs 85 crores) in Ethereum. Blockchain data from Nansen reveals that World Liberty Financial bought 3,007 ETH at a price of $3,325 each. This isn't their first major investment as in March, the company had already purchased 4,468 ETH. In addition to Ethereum, Trump's personal gains from his $TRUMP meme coin have been remarkable. According to crypto analytics firm Gauntlet, he has earned $150 million (Rs 1,275 crores) from the token between January and mid-June. Research platform Messari suggests that a planned 'coin unlock' this week could increase his crypto wealth by another $100 million (Rs 850 crores). view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Chhattisgarh liquor ‘scam': Why ex-CM Bhupesh Baghel's son, Chaitanya was arrested

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday (July 18) arrested former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya on charges of money laundering in connection with the alleged Rs 2,161-crore liquor scam. He was later produced before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Raipur and remanded to ED custody for five days. This development comes a couple of months after the central agency raided 14 locations in connection with its probe into the alleged scam, including the Baghels' Bhilai residence. Here is what to know. The alleged liquor scam occurred between 2019 and 2022 under the Congress-led state government. A syndicate of senior state bureaucrats, politicians, and excise department officials stand accused of running a 'parallel' excise department, wherein liquor was sold to the public but no money came to the state exchequer, causing the government a loss of Rs 2,161 crore. The ED registered an Enforcement Case Information Report ECIR in April 2024 following an FIR registered by Chhattisgarh's Economic Offences Wing/Anti-Corruption Bureau (EOW/ACB). The prominent accused who have been named in the FIR and arrested in the liquor scam so far are former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma; Anwar Dhebar, who was the alleged mastermind of the scam and is the brother of former Raipur mayor and Congress leader Aijaz Dhebar; and bureaucrats retired IAS officer Anil Tuteja, then joint secretary in Chhattisgarh; and ITS Arun Pati Tripathi, then Special Secretary Government Commerce and Industry Department and MD, CG State Marketing Corporation Ltd. Neither Bhupesh Baghel nor Chaitanya have been named in the FIR. However, the ED raided the former CM's residence in Bhilai city, Durg, for the first time this March, to probe the duo's possible links to the scam. The ED's charges against Chaitanya According to the ED, Chaitanya was implicated in the statement of one of the former accused, Laxmi Narayan Bansal alias Pappu. Pappu claimed that he handled over Rs 1,000 crore in cash proceeds from the liquor scam in association with Chaitanya. According to Pappu, he would collect the funds from Anwar Dhebar through Dipen Chawda, then give them to former Congress treasurer Ram Gopal Agarwal, all while coordinating with Chaitanya. He also claimed he had given Rs 80-100 crore to KK Srivastava on Chaitanya's orders. The ED has also claimed that illegal money from the scam was used to build Chaitanya's 'Vitthal Green Project' through his company, Baghel Developers. A witness related to the project reportedly told the ED that the project's cost was falsely undervalued as Rs 7.14 crore, instead of its actual cost of Rs 13-15 crore. Further, one of the accused, Trilok Singh Dhillon, purportedly paid Baghel Developers Rs 5 crore to buy 19 flats for his employees. The ED has also alleged that one jeweller company, which has given an outstanding loan of Rs 4.5 crore to Chaitanya, had also bought six plots worth Rs 80 lakh from Baghel Developers. 'Thus, there are corroboratory reasons to believe that the funds so received by Chaitanya Baghel are against payment of cash to the proprietor of the Jeweller company, which is nothing but proceeds of crime,' said ED sources, adding that Chaitanya has received Rs 16.7 crores from the liquor scam. Dubious charges, politically motivated: Chaitanya's defence Chaitanya's lawyer Faisal Rizvi said the case has been ongoing since 2022, but his client's name was never mentioned in the ED's four prosecution complaints filed in court. He pointed out that the first raid at Chaitanya's home happened on March 10 this year, yet no summons was ever issued to question him under the money laundering law. The lawyer argued that Chaitanya was arrested based solely on statements from Pappu Bansal, against whom a non-bailable warrant was issued in May. 'ED did not ask him even once whether Pappu Bansal's allegations are true or not,' Rizvi said, questioning whether Bansal's statement was obtained under pressure. Meanwhile, former CM Bhupesh Baghel told the media that his son was arrested without any prior notice or inquiry. He claimed the arrest was politically motivated because he had opposed an Adani coal mining project in Raigarh district. 'This is happening clearly because I and my party raised the issue of trees being felled,' Baghel said, alleging that Adani's people cut down 5,000 trees overnight in the presence of forest officials. Baghel also criticised the agencies, pointing out that while Pappu Bansal has a court-issued non-bailable warrant against him, he continues to roam freely and give statements to different offices. 'It is understandable how these agencies, the government, and the people of the Bharatiya Janata Party respect the court,' he added.
