House, two vehicles destroyed in Kunak fire

By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: KUNAK: A single-storey house and two vehicles, a Proton Wira and Proton Waja, were destroyed in a fire at Kg Buang Sayang, Jalan Kunak Jaya on Tuesday morning. Kunak Fire and Rescue Chief Mohamad Omarbatha said they received the emergency call at 8:45am. Eight firefighters led by Operations Commander PBKI Rosman Gari were dispatched to the scene, about six kilometres from the station. The fire was extinguished using a 500-foot hose line with water from the FRT engine and nearby hydrant. The operation ended at 11:40am. No injuries were reported. Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce praises 24-hour licensing move
Published on: Friday, July 18, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 18, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) has praised the Sabah Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (Sabah LPKP) for the full activation of its 24-hour Integrated Public Transport Licensing System (ISPKP), describing the initiative as a progressive step toward improving regulatory oversight and service delivery. The commendation came during a courtesy visit by SUCCC representatives to Sabah LPKP, led by Wong Thart Sin, Chairman of SUCCC's Logistics and Transport Committee (LTC) and former Deputy Chairman of the same committee under the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM). Advertisement Wong represented SUCCC President Datuk Michael Lui Yen Sang, and was accompanied by LTC Deputy Chairman Koh Tze Eak and Secretary Amy Hiew Yen Mie. During the engagement, Sabah LPKP Director Dairin Unsir outlined the board's regulatory responsibilities, which include the licensing of all commercial vehicles in the state. In line with Sabah's autonomy and nationalistic economic priorities, LPKP Sabah requires applicants for commercial vehicle permits to meet a minimum local equity ownership of 70 percent. However, concerns were raised during the meeting over the presence of unlicensed commercial vehicles operating in Sabah, as well as the practice of heavy vehicles parking along roadsides, particularly in the Sandakan region, which undermines the board's safety compliance objectives. Wong stressed the importance of prioritising local logistics and transport operators, especially in underdeveloped regions of the state, to ensure the sustainability of SUCCC members' businesses in Sabah's growing transport sector. The session also touched on the expansion of safety and compliance systems such as ICOP and AIS, and discussed SUCCC's potential participation in LPKP Sabah's public engagement forums. No more extension for Pan Borneo contractors

LAHAD DATU: Deputy Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, has issued a firm reminder to contractors involved in the Pan Borneo Highway project, stressing that no further extension of time (EOT) should be granted for current and future phases of construction of the Package 1B. He said he had received a briefing about the Package 1A and 1B of the project, where work on 1A had been awarded some time ago, while contracts for 1B were only finalised at the end of last year. Advertisement Despite the differing timelines, he emphasised that no additional EOT should be considered, regardless of the reasons provided by the contractors. The minister said that approving an EOT for one company could set a precedent, potentially leading to a domino effect where other contractors also request delays. He explained that such a situation had occurred during the execution of Package 1A, which saw repeated extensions and substantial project delays. 'Delays in Package 1B would ultimately disadvantage the people, the government, and the contractors themselves,' he said. According to Ahmad Maslan projects that are carried out ahead of time (AOT) will provide benefit all parties especially the contractors. The AOT will also enable the people to enjoy the infrastructure and ends their misery. He said previously the road maintenance was handled by specific concessionaires, but areas under Pan Borneo are now the responsibility of appointed contractors. Failure to maintain these roads, he stressed, leads to damage that causes long-term hardship for road users. The Deputy Minister pointed out that several components under Package 1A had received as many as four or five EOT approvals, leading to delays of up to three years. He said that under his tenure—and that of Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi—the ministry would no longer tolerate excessive or frivolous EOT applications.
