A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl died after being beaten by her mother who tried to discipline her in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, China.
Oriental Daily reported that the 44-year-old woman, known only as Zheng, was earlier summoned to her daughter's school, where the teacher reported the girl's behavioural issues and declining academic performance.
This made the mother upset and led to her beating her daughter badly at their home in Ouhai district on May 9.
The girl lost consciousness during the beating and later died from her injuries despite rescue efforts. Zheng reportedly broke down on the spot.
Police detained Zheng on Thursday, with investigations still ongoing.
Chinese media reported that the girl's father was working abroad in pursuit of a better life, leaving Zheng to manage household affairs on her own.
> An allegedly intoxicated male passenger caused a major disturbance aboard a VietJet Air flight from Taichung, Taiwan, to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
During the incident on Wednesday, the man reportedly hurled verbal abuse at a female passenger seated beside him, threw punches and threatened flight attendants, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Crew members had to subdue him before securing him with red tape to restore order.
According to a female passenger known as Lin, the man suddenly became agitated mid-flight, shouting profanities and hitting the seat in front of him.
Video footage showed the man lunging at the woman seated next to him, resulting in a physical altercation that quickly got out of control.

No kid gloves for any bully

YOURSAY | 'Bully today, courtroom tomorrow.' Form 3 student 'beaten, stripped, nearly strangled' by Form 4 bullies Drkam: So, you almost killed someone from bullying… and the next scene? Six families marched to the victim's house, begging for the case to be dropped. Bravo! What a fine example of 'Malaysian problem-solving.' Here's an idea: instead of playing the sympathy card, let's make you famous. Try these bullies in court as adults. Put their names in the history books - a shining example for future generations that stupidity and violence come with consequences. Every school should tell this story to juniors and seniors alike: 'Once upon a time, some kids thought bullying was fun. Now they're learning about the consequences… from behind bars." Enough of this nonsense where families think they can bargain away accountability like it's a pasar malam (night market) discount. Malaysia doesn't need bullying as a culture. We need responsibility as tradition. So here's the moral: Bully today, courtroom tomorrow. Hrrmph: Why the necessity to have new laws and tribunals for bullying? Charge these bullies as criminals under the Criminal Procedure Code. Their actions are criminal, and they should be charged and, if found guilty, punished like any criminal. No kid gloves and no special treatment! Mano: The students in school have seen enough bullying to emulate. 1. Teachers bully students, especially minorities and the marginalised. Even with the minorities, teachers will often not try their tricks on the middle and upper classes. 2. They have seen enough of Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh-types bullying of minorities and egged on by probably their parents, relatives, even people they pray with. 3. They saw how a Chinese disabled Grab driver was assaulted by a police officer when the police officer should have been a protector. 4. They saw how activist Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam (and her parents), a bright, outspoken student who spoke up against a teacher for infusing sexual grooming during a school lesson, was harassed and bullied by the whole school, the district, state and federal education systems. 5. They saw, read and heard about how teachers bullied students by checking on their menstrual pads, and so far to date no action has been taken. So many examples to emulate. Mat M Din: Principals should enforce strict discipline in schools to prevent bullying from taking place. If bullying happens, principals should be held responsible for negligence. To enforce strict disciplinary measures in schools, it is advised that during the school morning assembly, principals have to make a strict announcement that students who are caught bullying will be suspended or dismissed from school. Students who are threatened with bullying should immediately inform their class teachers so that prompt action can be taken to stop it. Students who are caught making threats should be summoned to the principal's office together with their parents for admonition. If these measures could be strictly implemented, bullying could be prevented. Mechi: Slow action, inertia by top school authorities, bureaucratic practices, and interference by "politicians or those who are close to politicians" are some of the barriers to eliminating this problem. Principals are incompetent or indolent! Students to protest demanding Fadhlina's resignation World Citizen: Many people have said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek should be given the boot, but this is the ultimate. Her most important stakeholder, the students, are now protesting that she resign. This is utterly shameful. Fadhlina has failed on many fronts and has made many silly mistakes since taking office. Most importantly, she has failed miserably to reform and uplift the country's education system and standard of education. It is time for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to let her go and find somebody who can bring some real changes to our education system. Appum: Fadhlina, where art thou? Are we nurturing a sadistic culture in schools? School children are our future. Put on your thinking cap, if you have one, and consult with education experts of all races and come out with a curriculum or programme that can help produce useful citizens of tomorrow for our country. Don't bury your head in the sand! Fools seldom differ: Parents are partly to be blamed and fully responsible for not inculcating discipline in their families. They need to be charged for the violent and inhuman behaviour of their children. Looking back, our flip-flop educational policies are a let-down and a complete farce. Ministers come and ministers go. They are not doing anything but collecting their fat salaries and perks. I hope and pray our country will not descend into lawlessness. Hmmm: @Fools seldom differ, not completely true. Our latest education minister has just implemented a national flag badge for all students. This will surely solve our bullying problems as well as falling educational standards. GoldenParrot4280: Please lah. Bullying has existed for the longest time. Want to blame this education minister only? There are many others to blame as well. Note also that there are criminal laws against bullying. Want to blame the police as well? Really Tired of Idiots: Yes, the bullies must be punished. But more important is the follow-up of the victim and the bullies. Hopefully, they will be reformed. FYI, bullying is also common in the workplace, be it the office, factory or hospital. Latest Pontian flag blunder further emboldens rightist Akmal who asks 'am I racist to rebuke?'

ANOTHER flag gaffe at a dental clinic in Pontian, Johor has somehow vindicated UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who is due to be charged at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court tomorrow (Aug 22) over statements deemed to threaten public order in the recent Jalur Gemilang row which entailed war of words with DAP. 'I want to wait and see what the reason for this case is and I want to hear what excuse the back-up guy (taking a swipe at DAP) has to offer' he penned on his Facebook (FB) page. 'When we rebuke them, we're considered racist, we're considered politicising the matter yet they don't know how to take care of our feelings. 'This is not about race nor politics but about respect for our homeland! Anyway, rest assured for we (UMNO Youth) shall defend our homeland.' Pertaining to the Pontian flag blunder, Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan who happens to be its MP said the matter has been rectified with a female clinic staff admitted to putting up the flag incorrectly unintentionally. 'Both the dentist and his female employee have given their statement to the police while several quarters and NGOs have filed police reports,' revealed the UMNO supreme council member in a FB post last night (Aug 20). 'Tomorrow (Aug 21), I shall meet and discuss with the Deputy OCPD at 11.45am at the Pontian district police headquarters (IPD). Calling for calm, Ahmad assured that the relevant authorities are investigating the matter and will take the appropriate action. 'It's important to remember that has nothing to do with racism. It's a matter of sensitivity, thoroughness and patriotism,' he stressed, 'All races and quarters need to be careful when dealing with sensitive matters. The duty of those in power is to ensure that the law is always obeyed.' Meanwhile, the Pontian Municipal Council said four individuals, namely two Malay women, one Chinese man and one Chinese woman were brought to the Pontian IPD by the police for further investigation. 'The premises had committed an offence under the council's Flag Hoisting (Business and Industrial Trade Licensing) By-Laws 2019,' it added. – Aug 21, 2025

Love at first food delivery

Compiled by TAN SIN CHOW, DIVYA THERESA RAVI AND R. ARAVINTHAN DURING a delivery in Shenyang, Liaoning province, a Chinese food delivery rider encountered an American woman, with whom he bonded instantly and ultimately married. Oriental Daily reported that Liu Hao met Hannah Harris from Alabama, United States, when she ordered food in November last year. Harris worked as a teacher at a local kindergarten. Upon delivering the food upstairs, Liu encountered Hannah in the elevator, sparking an instant connection that felt akin to a romantic encounter. He recalled: 'It was my first time meeting a foreigner, and I did not know how to greet her. 'The only English words I knew were 'Hello, I love you', and that was what I said. She replied, 'I love you, too'.' They then started chatting through the food delivery app and eventually exchanged contact information, beginning their relationship a week later. During winter, Harris often accompanied Liu around the city while he delivered food, offering him warmth and support. Liu said, 'Although we do not understand each other's language, our hearts are the closest.' In January this year, Liu bought a ring and proposed to Harris, and the latter accepted. In March, they held their wedding in his hometown of Fushun, Liaoning province. Liu met Harris' parents via video call and praised his wife for being very understanding, adding that she did not ask for a car, house, or dowry. The couple mainly relies on translation apps to communicate and is learning each other's languages. Harris learns five Chinese phrases a day, while Liu learns five English words. > Sin Chew Daily reported that a nine-year-old girl in China stole her neighbour's safebox, smashed it open with a brick and used the cash to buy snacks. The child who lives in Zhengzhou, Henan province, had earlier gone over to play and, upon leaving, carried the safe box from the living room. She then proceeded to carry it down 15 floors using the stairs. The victim discovered the safebox was missing and immediately checked the surveillance footage, which showed the girl lugging the safebox down the staircase. 'It is unbelievable. She did not even take the elevator. She walked down 15 floors carrying the safe box,' the victim said. Reports said the girl later used a brick to smash the safe open, taking out more than 20,000 yuan (RM11,763) in cash, along with three informal debt acknowledgement documents. She then gave around 1,000 yuan (RM588) to her older brother and used the rest to buy a large amount of snacks. The victim confronted the girl, who returned just over 3,000 yuan (around RM1,764) on the spot. The remaining money and the debt documents were still missing. The girl's parents admitted that her behaviour was inappropriate and expressed willingness to negotiate a compensation.
