Tchouaméni downplays boos by Real Madrid fans and turns attention to Atletico
Associated Press
MADRID (AP) — Aurelien Tchouameni can definitely hear the boos from the Real Madrid crowd.
He is not really listening to them, though.
The France midfielder has being doing his best to turn the cheers into applause after a tough stretch and has been playing well going into Madrid's decisive Champions League match against city rival Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Tchouaméni could be key for coach Carlo Ancelotti as Madrid tries to hold on to a 2-1 victory from the first leg at home in the round of 16.
'The whole team is ready, we will give everything to win the match,' the 25-year-old Tchouaméni said. 'Atleti will play a very attacking game, but we know what we have to do. We will give everything to win the match.'
Tchouaméni has been having to improvise as a defender because of a series of injuries to Madrid's regular starters, and he was targeted by fans after a few costly mistakes and poor performances in important matches, including a 5-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in January.
'Of course I hear the boos during the matches,' he said Tuesday. 'But it's not a problem, every match has its own story.'
He said he is fine playing in a different position than his natural one but admitted that it requires some changes to his game.
'Playing as a midfielder or as a defender is very different," he said. "In defense, you don't have the ball for as long and you have to adapt.'
With central defenders Raul Asencio and Antonio Rudiger set to start, Tchouaméni is expected to play as a midfielder again on Wednesday, when Atletico is likely to come out attacking at home. He will anchor the first line of defense that will try to keep Atletico from getting near Thibaut Courtois' goal.
Madrid is the defending Champions League winner and a record 15-time European champion. It has beaten Atletico twice in the final — in 2014 and 2016 — and eliminated the city rival the other two times they faced in the knockout stages of the Champions League — in the 2015 quarterfinals and 2017 semifinals.

Steelers star linebacker TJ Watt skips the start of mandatory minicamp
Associated Press PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers might be ready to take the practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. Watt is not. The star outside linebacker skipped the start of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Watt likely is eyeing a new deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. The seven-time Pro Bowler and 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. That number has been eclipsed several times over the last four years, including by Cleveland star Myles Garrett, who signed a deal in March that made him the most well-compensated non-quarterback in the league at $40 million a season. The decision to skip minicamp is a change from Watt's approach in 2021, when he did a 'hold in' during both minicamp and training camp before agreeing to a contract on the eve of the regular season. 'We expect him back at some point,' defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said Tuesday. 'We don't get caught up (in that) ... He's going to be in good shape (whenever he arrives).' Watt tied an NFL record by registering 22 1/2 sacks after signing the extension in 2021. He led the league in sacks again in 2023, though that number dipped to 11 1/2 last season, Watt's fewest in a year in which he didn't miss extended time because of injury since he was a rookie in 2017. Austin believes Watt's absence will provide opportunities for younger players like third-year outside linebacker Nick Herbig and rookie Jack Sawyer. Maybe, but neither has Watt's game-changing resume. Watt, who turns 31 in October, is the linchpin of a defense that has helped keep the Steelers in contention despite heavy churn at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement in January 2022. Rodgers will get his shot after agreeing to a one-year deal last week. The four-time NFL MVP was at the team facility on Tuesday and is expected to be on the field when afternoon practice begins. ___ AP NFL: recommended

Hermoso left out of Spain's squad for Women's European Championship

(AP Photo/Jorge Mendoza) MADRID (AP) — Spain's squad for the Women's European Championship does not include Jenni Hermoso, the player who was kissed without her consent by the former president of the Spanish soccer federation in the awards ceremony of the 2023 World Cup. The kiss led to a guilty verdict for sexual assault for Luis Rubiales earlier this year. Advertisement Spain stars Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati were among the 25 players called up by coach Montse Tomé on Tuesday ahead of the tournament in Switzerland. The training camp will begin next Thursday in Spain, with players from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — who participated in the final of the Copa de la Reina on Saturday, due to report Sunday. The team will play a friendly against Japan near Madrid on June 27, and two days later will travel to Switzerland ahead of its Euro debut against Portugal on July 3. The final roster will be 23 players. The other nations in Spain's Euro 2025 group are Italy and Belgium. Advertisement Hermoso, who plays for Mexican club Tigres, has not been called up for national duty since friendlies against Italy and Canada last October. She had played in the Olympic tournament in Paris, when Spain finished fourth. Hermoso, the all-time leading scorer for Spain's national team with 57 goals in 123 matches, was left out of the squad right after the scandal broke, when Tomé said she was protecting the player. Hermoso was back with the squad after that, but the coach had said after the Olympics that a new cycle was beginning in the national team. In addition to winning the World Cup in 2023, Spain also won last year's Nations League title. In February, a Spanish court ruled that Rubiales had sexually abused Hermoso when he kissed her without consent. Spain's National Court ordered Rubiales to pay more than 10,000 euros ($10,400 then) in fines and prohibited him from getting within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. ___ AP soccer:
