EU Countries to Give Initial Verdict on Contentious Budget

European Affairs ministers meet today in Brussels to share initial feedback on the Commission's contentious proposal for the EU's long-term budget. Germany swiftly rejected the plan unveiled on Wednesday, saying the €2 trillion headline figure was too high at a time when many nations are striving for fiscal consolidation. Speaking during a visit to London yesterday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the EU must do more with the money it has and rejected a proposed levy on companies, setting up a clash with Commission president and fellow German Christian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen. Another point of contention is likely to be a €400 billion crisis tool, set to be backed by joint borrowing — a controversial mechanism that has long met resistance from Berlin and like-minded fiscal hawks.

Liverpool have reached an ‘outline agreement' with Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool have reached an outline agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the transfer of former Paris Saint-Germain forward Hugo Ekitike (22), as per . While formalities remain, the deal is expected to be completed within days and could become a record sale for Frankfurt if all add-ons are met. The striker enjoyed a blistering first full season in Germany after moving to Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain – netting 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last term. Those performances earned him a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season, and now appear set to earn him a blockbuster move to Anfield. Ekitike's form reignited interest from Newcastle, who reportedly had a €75m bid rejected earlier this summer. Liverpool then entered the race, having also made contact with Newcastle over Alexander Isak and showing a willingness to spend over £120m. With personal terms not expected to be an issue, the Frenchman could become a key attacking addition under new manager Arne Slot. His arrival may also accelerate departures: Luis Diaz is pushing for an exit, and Darwin Nunez is no longer considered untouchable. | George Boxall

Liverpool will make Newcastle PAY for Hugo Ekitike transfer deal

Newcastle's plans to sign Hugo Ekitike have unravelled in the last few days. The Geordies made an attempt to sign the Eintracht Frankfurt striker, submitting a bid which could not convince the German side to do business. And while Eddie Howe's side were reeling from the knock-back, Liverpool swooped in. Ekitike now appears Anfield-bound - and his arrival will take the Reds' spending to well over £250m this summer. LFC x Nike Air Max Buy Now LFC Retro Shirts Buy Now LFC Kits Buy Now LFC Nike Training Buy Now Newcastle have no choice but to move on to other targets and according to one report in Germany, they have got a Liverpool player in their sights. The Merseysiders have managed to claw back plenty of money in sales so far this window - with Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips all departing. Nunez stuck in transfer limbo But more outgoings will be required in order to finance a blockbuster deal for Ekitike - and this is where Newcastle's interest in Darwin Nunez could come in very handy indeed. Having seen a move to Napoli fall apart - due to the Italian champions' reluctance to meet Liverpool's asking price - 26-year-old Darwin was stuck in transfer limbo. Teams in Saudi Arabia are willing to meet his valuation - said to be around £70m - but the player's first choice had been initially to remain in Europe. And now BILD is reporting that Newcastle are ready to move on to Darwin to supplement their striking options. Newcastle have got Darwin Nunez on their radar Of course Alexander Isak remains the Magpies' first choice, but the reason behind a move for Ekitike was reportedly to give cover and competition to the Swede - as well as field the duo up top together. 'Newcastle have dropped out of the poker game and already have two other attackers on their radar: Victor Osimhen and Darwin Nunez,' the report reads. 'It became increasingly clear that the Frenchman was not convinced about a move to Newcastle. 'Experts were all the more surprised that Newcastle had already submitted an initial official offer (€80 million) to Frankfurt. 'It's clear that the Magpies wanted to put significant pressure on Ekitiké, hoping for a breakthrough.'

Liverpool reach outline of agreement with Frankfurt over Hugo Ekitike transfer

Liverpool have found the outline of an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the proposed signing of forward Hugo Ekitike. Work is still needed to formally get the deal done and that is expected in the next day or so. If all add-ons within the impending move are realised, there is optimism at Frankfurt that it would represent a club-record sale — surpassing the €95million (£82.3m, $110.5m) achieved when Randal Kolo Muani switched to Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. Advertisement The Athletic reported on Thursday that Liverpool were advancing in talks for Ekitike, with personal terms not expected to be an issue. Newcastle United previously saw a €75m offer for Ekitike turned down and after cooling their interest in the 23-year-old, began considering Brentford's Yoane Wissa as an alternative target. Liverpool had also contacted Newcastle over the potential signing of Alexander Isak, indicating their willingness to do a deal in the region of £120m. The Anfield club have been prioritising a striker this summer and, while sensitivities remain understandably high following the tragic death of Diogo Jota earlier this month, there is an awareness they need to make further additions after bringing in Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. There may also be departures in Liverpool's forward line, with the club open to offers on Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz having informed them of his desire to leave amid interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Ekitike joined Eintracht from Paris Saint-Germain initially on loan in January 2024 before signing permanently in the summer for €17.5m. He scored four goals and two assists in 14 appearances during his half-season loan spell in Germany, before registering 22 goals and 12 assists last term as he was named in the Bundesliga team of the season. The forward has been capped five times for the France Under-21s but has yet to play for the senior side. Ekitike came through the academy at Reims before joining PSG in 2022. He had come close to joining Newcastle in January 2022 before the move broke down on deadline day, then signing for PSG that summer. Additional reporting by Sebastian Stafford-Bloor Analysis by German football writer Sebastian Stafford-Bloor Ekitike is fast becoming an excellent player. The first few months of the 2024-25 season were characterised by his combinations and understanding with Omar Marmoush and, before the Egyptian's departure for City, they became one of the most dangerous pairings in the Bundesliga. Advertisement It was in that partnership that Ekitike showed the variety within his game. A goalscorer, yes, but also a devastating counter-attacker — as Tottenham Hotspur found out in the Europa League, against whom he scored brilliantly in the first leg of their quarter-final — and a forward capable of creating chances, with pieces of skill or well-weighted passes that befuddled defenders. Either through the middle or down the left of the attack, he was a menace. He seemed to grow into the gaps left by Marmoush, becoming more central to Frankfurt's attacking game in the new year. In addition, while most obviously a technical player, he can be a formidable penalty box target, too, and has shown an aerial presence that can take defenders by surprise. Combine that with his capacity to beat defenders one-on-one, either through speed or skill, and you have the portrait of a player evolving into a complete forward. There is no question that he is still developing. He must become more efficient and is occasionally prone to snatching at chances, but he is as talented as there is in German football and Premier League interest this summer was inevitable. ()
