WSL: Aston Villa sign French defender Océane Deslandes

Yahoo26-07-2025
Aston Villa have signed Océane Deslandes on a free transfer from Montpellier following the expiry of her contract.
Aston Villa have added another star player to their squad ahead of the 25/26 WSL season. Deslandes is the fifth player Aston Villa have signed so far during the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old defender joins the club following the expiration of her contract with Montpellier, having played for the French side since 2022. A successful youth international for France, Deslandes began her career at Stade de Reims, rising through the ranks before making the move to one of France's top-flight sides.
Known for her composure, athleticism, and ability on the ball, Deslandes brings both experience and energy to Villa's back line.
Director of Women's Football Marisa Ewers expressed her excitement over the new addition: 'Océane has played very consistently in France and has gained a lot of minutes in recent seasons. She has impressed us with her energy and quality on the ball, and we hope we can aid her further development here at Aston Villa.'
Deslandes becomes the latest addition to the squad as Villa continue to strengthen ahead of the upcoming season. They finished sixth in the Women's Super League table last season with 25 points, three adrift of Brighton and Hove Albion, and ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Miserable start for Aussie star skipper in the Hundred

Beth Mooney, one of three Australian captains in the women's Hundred tournament in England, has endured a miserable launch to her reign at Manchester Originals, failing with the bat before overseeing a comprehensive six-wicket defeat. At the Originals' Old Trafford base on Wednesday, the 31-year-old Victorian wicketkeeper-batter star lost the toss against the Southern Brave - and things only went quickly downhill after her side were put in to bat. Opening the batting as ever, Mooney, who's taken over the captaincy from star English international teammate Sophie Ecclestone, had hoped to emulate fellow Aussies Meg Lanning and Grace Harris, whose brilliant batting on Tuesday had lit up the Hundred's opening day at Lord's. Instead, she first had to watch her partner Kathryn Bryce get bowled for a second-ball duck before her own struggles began. The perfect start for Southern Brave in their #TheHundred 2025 campaign 💚 — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 6, 2025 Mooney had managed to eke out just a single from the first five balls she faced before she failed to get on top of a delivery from English allrounder Mady Villiers that got a bit of extra bounce and cut straight into the hands of backward point Danni Wyatt-Hodge. Her exit was just the start of the collapse as the hosts were quickly reduced to 5-39 off just 41 balls, with Lauren Bell (3-28) and Villiers (2-18) doing most of the early damage. Only Seren Smale ralled for the Originals, scoring an unbeaten 40 from 34 balls to give Mooney's side a semblance of hope as they closed on 8-95 off their 100-ball allocation. Laura Wolvaardt and Wyatt-Hodge put on 48 from 36 deliveries to set the visitors on the road to victory, even though the latter got a beauty and was bowled for 32 by England colleague Ecclestone. Veteran Kiwi Sophie Devine was dismissed for a duck by Danielle Gregory and Ecclestone caught Freya Kemp off Ameilia Kerr, but Wolvaardt safely steered Southern Brave to a comfortable victory with an unbeaten 42 off 37 balls. It was a disappointing start for Mooney, who's been charged with helping restore the fortunes of the Originals as their on-field leader, as their women's side have yet to ever progress beyond the group stages of the event. Mooney's fellow Australian skippers - Ellyse Perry is in charge of the Birmingham Phoenix while Ash Gardner is leading the Trent Rockets - will be hoping to do better when they lead their teams into a duel at Edgbaston on Friday.

Aston Villa-Roma 3-0 - IN PROGRESS Roma, after many matches of varying levels, faces a direct rival in the upcoming Europa League: Emery's Aston Villa. The English side, in better shape, overwhelmed the Giallorossi in the first half, which ended 3-0. For Gasp, a draft of the starting lineup with Hermoso confirmed, Al Ayanoui-Koné in the middle, and Dovbyk up front. However, in the first 45 minutes, it was an English monologue with goals from Buendia, Ramsey, and Watkins. Buendia's goal was a gem from a free kick that Svilar could do nothing about. Overall, Roma did little, if anything, in a first half dominated by the Betis-Como 0-2 - IN PROGRESS Yet another tough test for Como, who, in the first 45 minutes, also outplayed last season's Conference League finalist. First Diao, then Da Cunha: Fabregas' Lariani overwhelmed the Spaniards in the first 2-1 Excellent test for Juric's Atalanta, showing strong progress in this outing against Monza despite falling behind to a goal from Birindelli. The comeback was completed in the second half for the Dea thanks to goals from Charles De Keteleare and Giorgio credit: AS Roma This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Sky: Newcastle agree personal terms with Milan defender Thiaw

Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with Milan defender Malick Thiaw, amid rumours the German centre-back could be leaving the Rossoneri this summer. According to what has been reported by Sky journalist Patrick Berger on X, Newcastle have agreed terms on a four-year-deal with the former Schalke man, whilst Bayer Leverkusen also remain keen on the defender. MADRID, SPAIN – NOVEMBER 05: Malick Thiaw of AC Milan controls the ball during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 match between Real Madrid C.F. and AC Milan at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on November 05, 2024 in Madrid, Spain. (Photo by) However, Berger suggests Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri does not want the player to leave this summer, as he sees a potential future for the German in a 3-man defence. What next for Thiaw amid Newcastle interest? At the start of the summer, it looked apparent that Thiaw was on the transfer list for Milan. However, Allegri has reportedly been convinced by the 23-year-old in pre-season so far and having additional options at centre-back may be vital for the way the former Juventus coach wishes to run things in Lombardy. MILAN, ITALY – FEBRUARY 18: Zepiqueno Redmond of Feyenoord is challenged by Malick Thiaw of AC Milan during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Knockout Play-off second leg match between AC Milan and Feyenoord at San Siro Stadium on February 18, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) Newcastle reportedly made a €30 million offer for Thiaw and talks between the two clubs continue but the Rossoneri are in a position to demand a large fee for the defender.
