Several injured after Gaza church struck, patriarchate says

Saudi Gazette3 days ago
JERUSALEM — Several people have been injured at the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, with some unconfirmed reports that it was hit by Israeli artillery shells. Catholic Church leaders referred only to it being "struck by a raid" in a statement, but Italy's prime minister blamed Israeli forces. The Israeli military said it was aware of the reports of damage and casualties at the church, adding that "the circumstances of the incident are under review". Many displaced Christian families from the small local community have been living in the Roman Catholic church since the war began after their own homes were destroyed. While he was alive, the late Pope Francis called them on a near-daily basis. The Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem said the Argentine parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli, was among those injured and denied initial reports of fatalities. It added that the church had been damaged. A video and photos shared with the BBC showed the roof was hit, close to the cross, and that windows were broken. The Latin Patriarchate said it would provide additional details when they were confirmed. A video aired on Arab TV showed Father Gabriel walking unsteadily and checking on a man on a stretcher at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, where those injured are being treated. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni blamed Israel, saying: "The attacks against the civilian population that Israel has been carrying out for months are unacceptable." "No military action can justify such an attitude," she added. The Vatican has so far not responded to a request for comment. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem condemned the strike, which it called a "flagrant violation of human dignity and a blatant violation of the sanctity of life and the sanctity of religious sites, which are supposed to provide a safe haven in times of war". It estimated that 600 displaced people were sheltering inside at the time, the majority of whom were children as well as 54 people with special needs. The Holy Family Church falls within part of Gaza City that the Israeli military has previously told locals to leave. Israel launched its war in Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and led to 251 others being taken hostage. Israeli attacks have since killed more than 58,500 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The ministry's figures are quoted by the UN and others as the most reliable source of statistics available on casualties. — BBC

Israel Declines Visa Extension for Top UN Humanitarian Official

A UN spokesperson unveiled on Friday that Israel has refused to renew the visa for Jonathan Whittall, the senior UN aid official for the occupied Palestinian territories, according to The Washington Post. Eri Kaneko also noted that there were growing threats of reduced access to suffering civilians. 'Last week, it was indicated to us that our current Head of Office, Jonathan Whittall, won't have his visa extended by Israeli authorities beyond August. This came immediately after remarks he made at a press briefing about starving people being killed while trying to reach food,' Kaneko said. He added that Isarel has recently renewed visas for UN staff for shorter periods than usual. Meanwhile, it denied access requests to Gaza for multiple agencies. Moreover, Israel withheld permits for Palestinian staff to enter East Jerusalem. Israel has been under growing criticism from the UN during its war in Gaza that has internally displaced Gaza's entire population and caused one of the worst humanitarian crises worldwide. Call for Abolishing Investigation Body In a response, Israel has urged the UN Human Rights Council to abolish the commission of inquiry into human rights violations in the Palestinian territories and Israel, according to Reuters. It also accused the council of bias and discrimination. In the message sent on Wednesday, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Daniel Meron, said The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, discriminated against his country. Israel has repeatedly criticized findings by the UN-mandated commission, that has denounced the Israeli military's actions since it has launched its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Council spokesperson Pascal Sim said that Council President Jurg Lauber had already received the letter, but it would be up to the Council's 47 members to abolish the commission. In March, the commission concluded that Israel had carried out 'genocidal acts' against Palestinians during its war in Gaza. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Palestinians Protest against Settler Outpost at West Bank

Clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli army broke out on Friday during a march against a newly established Israeli settlement outpost in a village in the northern occupied West Bank, according to AFP. All Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law. However, approximately 1 million Israeli settlers live in illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in violation of international law. Meanwhile, settler outposts are also prohibited under Israeli law. During the march, a group of Palestinians walked from Raba toward a nearby hill on top of which settlers had established the outpost. 'We came to this area to express our protest and say: 'this land is ours, not yours',' Ghassan Bazour, head of Raba's village council, told AFP. They performed Friday prayer at the base of the hill and continued toward the outpost. At that time, Israeli soldiers arrived on the scene and dispersed the crowd with tear gas, an AFP journalist reported. As a result, 13 people suffered from tear gas inhalation and received medical care from the Palestinian Red Crescent. Bazour stated that settlers had originally taken over the hill's high ground to establish an outpost and prevent Palestinians from accessing nearby agricultural lands. 'There is now a settler outpost here (which) will continue to devour the land and empty these areas,' Muayad Shaaban, head of the Palestinian Authority's Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, told AFP. Mounting Violence Violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has been growing since the Hamas attack of October 2023 with increasing number of killings and attacks by settlers and security forces. OHCHR noted that settlers have launched 757 attacks on Palestinians or their properties since January 2025. In May, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel planned to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the occupied West Bank, according to Al-Arabiya. Katz's remarks followed Israel's announcement of the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. Hezbollah rejects US push for disarmament in Lebanon-Israel ceasefire framework

BEIRUT — Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem said Friday that the United States is pressuring Lebanon to accept a new agreement with Israel that would begin with Hezbollah's disarmament in exchange for a partial Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. In a televised speech aired by Hezbollah's Al-Manar channel during a ceremony honoring slain commander Ali Karaki, Qassem warned that disarmament would amount to facilitating Israeli expansion. 'We fully implemented the ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon, south of the Litani River,' he said. 'Now the U.S. wants a new deal starting with disarming us for a partial withdrawal by Israel.' Qassem reiterated Hezbollah's refusal to respond to any calls to hand over its weapons unless Israeli aggression on Lebanon stops. The remarks come ahead of a scheduled visit by U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack to Beirut next week. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed the visit Friday, saying that the Lebanese government had reviewed and commented on a U.S. proposal Barrack submitted via President Joseph Aoun. According to Salam, the American paper proposes a phased process tied to key elements: a complete Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory, extension of Lebanese state authority across the entire country, and exclusive control of weapons by the state. 'The proposal includes ideas related to arrangements for the cessation of hostilities, and we have conveyed our observations,' Salam said in comments reported by the National News Agency. He emphasized transparency, stating, 'We do not work in black rooms,' without disclosing the full content of Lebanon's feedback. A Lebanese official earlier told Anadolu Agency that Barrack's proposal, submitted June 19, links Hezbollah's disarmament and state monopoly over weapons to Israel's withdrawal from five remaining positions in southern Lebanon. It also includes provisions for releasing funds to rebuild war-damaged areas and implementing reforms in border control, smuggling prevention, customs collection, and public facility oversight. Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli forces erupted into full-scale warfare last September, despite a ceasefire agreement brokered in November. Israeli strikes have continued in southern Lebanon, with Tel Aviv citing Hezbollah activities as justification. Lebanese authorities have documented nearly 3,000 Israeli violations of the ceasefire, with more than 250 deaths and over 560 injuries reported since the truce began. Israel was supposed to fully withdraw by Jan. 26 but extended the deadline to Feb. 18, refusing to vacate five military outposts along the border. — Agencies
