Move over stealth wealth, ultra-rich dressing is back
Let's be clear, haute couture has always been for the ultra-wealthy. The clue's in the word haute. But with the leaders of the planet's richest, most powerful tech companies doggedly sticking to a wardrobe that looks more Aldi than Armani Privé and film stars not paying for anything they wear on a red carpet (although often they are paid), it has been hard to see couture's purpose of late.
Meanwhile, ready-to-wear labels such as Lora Piano, Brunello Cuccinelli and The Row, all makers of sublimely luxurious, loosely cut clothes that to the untrained eye might look like quite nice blankets, have cleaned up.
Yet with
In the seven years she has headed the creative side of Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri, often derided by the social media gallery for being 'too commercial', has made Dior one of those high end luxury brands that sells not just accessories, but a lot of tailored clothes. She placed its meticulously tailored Bar Jacket (first introduced in 1947 as part of Dior's iconic New Look) front and centre and constantly updated it. It is already a
Now she's turned it into something quirkier and more gothic: a frock coat, sometimes jet beaded and long enough to be worn as a (mini) tuxedo dress. At first sight these frock coats appeared to be cut away at the front, and buttonless. But as she explained backstage, the nehru neck lined gilets and filmy chemises underneath were buttoned into the frock coats. They could be worn as a combination or separately. More practicality.
The frock coats were part military, part Mad Hatter – there was definitely something of the Victorian
Alice in Wonderland
afoot. Black goth jackets with puff sleeves, trompe l'œil feathery capes (the feathers were fabric fronds), airy crinolines and Mohican hairdos intercut white broderie anglaise baby dolls. All nicely discombobulating.
It was Yves Saint Laurent, barely into his 20s, who, in 1958, came up with the baby doll silhouette when he was at Dior. Although it has been far eclipsed as a Dior signature by Dior's 1947 New Look, the baby doll (or trapeze as it was known) has been much copied ever since. Bypassing the waist in a triangular whoosh of fabric, it's so different from the chiselled bar jacket it's hard to imagine the same customer wearing it.
But as Chiuri says, 'fashion is all about shape shifting and transforming our bodies.' It was smart of her to pivot to a more youthful mood – and smarter still to ensure there was plenty of recognisably Bar Jacket tailoring. There are plenty of inexpensive dupes of The Row's tailoring which are fairly convincing until you feel the fabric. But I've never seen a bar jacket copy that comes close to the real thing. Chiuri is a maestro of unmistakably expensive but never vulgar polish.

Roseberry is a big talent who, since he joined it in 2019, has taken Schiaparelli from an also ran heritage house to one that attracts a disproportionate amount of media attention. In the beginning, he achieved this with slickly orchestrated gimmicks guaranteed to stir up controversy. Remember the dresses he designed two years ago featuring what looked like
This collection was gimmick free however, unless you count that tiny waist (the nearest I've ever seen on a catwalk, to the waists in John Singer Sargent portraits). Instead there were plenty of cantilevered bustiers, cleverly framed behind drape-fronted corsets – and sweeping skirts.
I'm sure Roseberry was working on this collection long before

Lily James stuns in a pale yellow floral yukata as she shares a series of glamorous snaps from her Tokyo getaway with best pal Gala Gordon
Lily James took to Instagram on Monday to share a series of glamorous snaps from her recent Tokyo getaway with close pal Gala Gordon. The actress, 36, looked effortlessly elegant in a pale yellow floral yukata as the pair took part in a traditional Japanese cooking class. For the occasion, Lily styled her brunette locks in a chic updo, finishing the look with a matching yellow flower tucked behind her ear as she beamed for the camera. Gala, 34, looked equally stunning in a white yukata adorned with a purple and pink floral print. She mirrored her pal's hairstyle with a sleek updo and accessorised with a delicate pink flower. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newslette r to stay in the loop. In another stylish snap, Lily turned heads in a white semi-sheer blouse featuring a unique black spray-paint print as the duo enjoyed an evening of delicious cuisine. Meanwhile, Gala looked effortlessly chic in a black bandeau top as she grinned alongside Lily during their fun-filled trip. Sharing the stunning snaps to Instagram, Lily gushed: 'Tokyo, I love you.' The holiday snaps come after Lily cut a chic figure as she joined Elle Macpherson at Dior's runway show in Kyoto, Japan in April. The actress showed off her sophisticated sense of style in a plunging black dress as she posed at the event held at the Toji Temple. She boosted her height with pearl-adorned heels and accessorised with gold hoop earrings while styling her honey tresses into perfect waves. Model Elle, 61, meanwhile wore a gorgeous silk embroidered white jacket which she teamed with wide-leg trousers. She clutched a small white handbag from the luxury brand and sported a perfect bouncy blowdry. Lily's appearance at the fashion show comes after she celebrated her 36th birthday earlier this year at a Michelin-starred restaurant in North London with her famous friends. The star splashed out on a private dining room at modern Italian restaurant, Luca, not far from Lily's Grade-II listed £3million home. Hiring a private space at the lavish eatery which has a minimum spend of £650, with the chef's fixed menu, including a wine pairing with each course, costs nearly £200 per person. Lily was all smiles as she was joined by several close friends including her Mamma Mia! co-star, Dominic Cooper, his girlfriend, actress Gemma Chan, actress Gala Gordon and socialite Poppy Delevingne, older sister of model Cara. Gala and Poppy took to Instagram to share pictures showing Lily looking happier than ever as she celebrated her day. She looked relaxed in a khaki sleeveless dress cut away at the waist, showing off her slender frame. The Surrey-born star and her friends drank champagne and red wine while feasting on a menu with mouth-watering items including £68 beef ribeye, £49 lamb with spiky artichoke and pine nuts and fresh pasta dishes such as £46 prawn taglierini. At the end of the meal, Lily was treated to a big white birthday cake adorned with multi-coloured candles, meringue balls and an icing photo of herself as a child in an early acting role. 'Keep shining my girl - this is your year,' her close friend Gala captioned a video online. Gala is an executive producer of Swiped, the film starring Lily as Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of dating app Bumble, due out this year. Gala is also co-founder of a film production company, Parados Productions, with Lily.

Rochelle Humes stuns in Next's linen co-ord hailed as 'perfect'
The tailored set consists of a waistcoat and either a skirt or a pair of city shorts Rochelle Humes looks absolutely stunning in her latest Next campaign, where she's seen modelling a chic new summer collection. The latest drop features tailored pieces in lightweight materials that are ideal for summer in the UK and on holiday abroad. A blue, textured, linen co-ord, as modelled by Rochelle, is already proving to be popular with shoppers who have praised it for being 'flattering' and 'perfect'. The TV presenter and pop star wore the powder-blue tailored co-ord with kitten heels and oversized earrings. The set is made from linen, so it's suitable for summer wear, ensuring consumers will not feel overly hot. It includes a longline sleeveless waistcoat (£39) with tortoise shell buttons—available in sizes 6-20. And then, prospective buyers can either choose from a longline skirt (£34, in sizes 6-22) or a pair of city shorts (£26, in sizes 6-22). The waistcoat and the skirt seem to be the most popular, with the most reviews. Similarly, New Look is selling an on-trend butter yellow co-ord as part of its summer collection. It is made up of a tailored pair of wide-leg trousers on sale for £34.99, and a matching bandeau waistcoat priced at £35.99 - it is also available in black and white colour options. Back to Rochelle's Next co-ord, a shopper said they have received lots of compliments on the waistcoat, explaining: "Lovely waistcoat and very flattering. Received so many compliments. It's washed well, too." Another had issues finding their right size, writing: "Sizing too big for a size six horrible, it's so massive. Lovely quality but too big size six fits a size 10 person." For shoppers after a boho-inspired co-ord look to Nobody's Child where this Blue Tie Dye set is offered. It comprises a bow-tie cami with spaghetti straps (£49) and a matching long, floaty skirt (£99). Back to Next's linen co-ord, another fashion fan wore the waistcoat with jeans instead of buying the full co-ord and said it 'looked brilliant'. Adding: "Very comfy to wear and a perfect length for me." There are also rave reviews for the longline skirt. A buyer complimented its 'beautiful colour' and lightweight material, but had a gripe, adding: "If I had one downside it would be that it is long. I'm 5ft 4 and had to turn the waist strap up one." Another shopper concluded: "Omg! Perfect linen skirt for the summer! Long, loose and cool. Very flattering and perfect length (I'm 5ft 4in and it rests just above my ankle. Perfect with a pair or wedges and a floaty top! Love it and will wear it to death!"
