A highlight for many are the 'special shapes' - depicting characters or items - but what does it take to make and fly a differently shaped balloon.
What are the special shapes to spot this year?
There have been many memorable shapes over the years of the festival and this year sees some new appearances and familiar faces. These ones will be flying:
Wednesday - the Addams Family character, star of her own Netflix series, casts a silhouette with her famous plaits.
UP - the balloon made of hundreds of balloons from the famous animated film.
Buster & Bella the Bulldogs - hear more about them below.
Astro the Alien - the green face will be watching you.
Oggy the Friendly Dragon - giving a thumbs up as he passes by.
Wera Screwdriver - shaped like the handle with the shank below the basket.
Wallace & Gromit's Moon Rocket - having a Grand Day Out.
Slither the Snake - twisted around a yellow balloon.
Lips - with a beaming smile and bright white teeth.
Daisy The Cow - the black and white Friesian floating above the fields.
Orange - a slice of citrus

How are they made?
Many of the special shapes are designed and produced in Bristol itself - at Cameron Balloons. The Director and Founder Don Cameron is credited with bringing ballooning to the UK and has overseen many special shapes over the years.
'It's difficult to have a favourite because your one at the time is the most interesting'
Concept
The customer will often approach the team with an idea in mind. Buster the Bulldog for example was created after a request for a dog-type shape.
Graphic Designer Will Offer explains, 'We've gone away and done some sketches and really thought about how it might fly. We've talked to the technical team - seen what they can produce for us - whether it will work as a shape and then we add more detail, artwork and it ends up hopefully looking fantastic'.
Technicals
This team has to make sure the idea works in practice and can actually fly.
Envelope Designer Steve Cocker explains 'It was a sketch and I said it can work - let's put it onto a standard balloon then let's just animate it."
"It's very easy to have two ears the same - so we have one ear going down, one ear going up, put the tongue to the side - it gives it a little bit more character. So it's a question of nudging it into the right shape and then saying yes we can do that.'
Assembly
Fleur Pryce is one of the seamstresses who then sew the shapes together.
'It's absolutely crazy - every day is a different day. It's so rewarding'.
She's been so charmed by ballooning she's becoming a pilot.
'I thought since I make them I may as well give it a go. So yeah I'm learning to fly."
After testing and delivery the shapes are ready to head to the skies.
As Don Cameron says, ' It's different from flying in an aeroplane. You can lean over the side of the basket and talk to people on the ground for example. It is just a magical thing.'

"And I get, part of that I get. I understand right? That's his inheritance, so to some extent it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution. "That day, a story came out that part of the reason why Meghan and I were leaving was because William had bullied us out. And once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother's name squashing the story about him bullying us out of the family. "I couldn't believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that. Prince Harry's UK PR team lead, Liam Maguire, was also present. A source told the publication: "There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in year. There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about." While Prince William's team were reportedly not invited to the shock summit, experts have revealed the hidden role he will have likely played behind the scenes as the future of the monarchy. They claim that while William is far less inclined to reconcile with his estranged brother, whom he's reportedly not spoken to in years, the meeting would have never happened without his 'support and understanding'. "He has undoubtedly been furious at the way the Sussexes have behaved and undoubtedly regards Harry's behaviour as treason of a sort. They reportedly have not spoken in over two years.' And royal author Phil Dampier said: "The King is more anxious to patch things up than William, who I believe will never be close to his brother again." Harry is due to head back to the UK in September for the annual WellChild events, an opportunity which could see him reunite with his dad for the first time in 18 months. Netflix makes huge Thursday Murder Club announcement and fans won't want to miss it
The Thursday Murder Club movie, directed by Home Alone's Chris Columbus, is coming to cinemas and Netflix later this month. Netflix has unveiled some thrilling news for fans eagerly awaiting The Thursday Murder Club movie, adapted from Richard Osman's hit novel. In a unique collaboration, the streaming service is teaming up with the Royal Horticultural Society to mark the release of the much-awaited film, directed by the renowned Chris Columbus. The star-studded cast of The Thursday Murder Club includes Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, and audiences can catch it in cinemas and on Netflix later this month. The plot synopsis reads: "Four irrepressible retirees spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, but their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands." For a limited period of one week, enthusiasts of the popular book series will be able to immerse themselves in a cosy crime experience at five RHS gardens, reports the Express. At these locations, murder mystery buffs are invited to "put their sleuthing skills to the test" through engaging scavenger hunts that "blend horticulture with homicide". From Friday August 22 to Thursday August 28, the event titled 'Murder Amongst the Marigolds' will offer visitors themed scavenger hunts, impressive floral billboards, and a special tearoom experience at RHS Garden Wisley. Participating gardens across the UK include RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, RHS Garden Bridgewater in Manchester, RHS Garden Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, and RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon. The event description teases: "Fans will enjoy exclusive activities, clues, and prizes; from interacting with film billboards meticulously brought to life in flowers, to channel their inner sleuths in scavenger hunts for themed prizes. Wannabe lawyer and true crime fan Kim Kardashian is even said to have been courted to help try and crack the case, according to TMZ, amid conspiracy theories that Amy was sex-trafficked. But author and YouTuber James Renner, who has done extensive research on the case and is set to release a new book next year, believes there could be a simpler answer. In an exclusive chat with The U.S. Sun, he said, "I think it's very interesting when you look at the facts of the case, such a small detail that doesn't seem to mean anything, but it might mean everything. "But if you've ever been on a cruise ship, you know that there are warning plaques in your room that say, 'Do not open the cabin door when the balcony doors open.' Because the hallway is pressurized. "So, if you open that cabin door, it creates a wind tunnel. And it often causes the cabin door to slam shut. "In fact, some people have lost fingers because it slammed shut so hard. "You cannot quietly leave a cabin room with the balcony door open. It would've woken everybody up." During his research for the book, Renner says he spoke to cruise staff who were briefed about what the FBI found in the cabin when they dusted it for prints. "I think it's possible she sat on the railing. I think what we might be looking at here is what the French call 'l'appel du vide' which we call 'call of the void.' "I think it's possible. She had a really rough night. She'd been drinking. She had a very big decision to make when she got home from that cruise ship. "And that was, does she live her life out in the open as a gay woman? Which is how she identified to everybody. "She didn't identify as bi, she identified as gay and lesbian. "So does she live that life and risk disappointing her parents and not having that close relationship? Or does she live a lie and turn her back on who she really is? So all that's going on in her mind. I think she's sitting on that balcony thinking, 'What if?' and by pushing off she causes action." When you're in places like that, just like when you're standing on the edge of a cliff, there is that voice inside you sometimes. that comes up and says, 'What if?' He said he will discuss his theory in full in his book, A Cruise to Nowhere, which will be released next summer. He said, "I talk about some stories where eyewitness testimony was faulty, and it's because memory doesn't work like it does on TV and film, where you see this flashback in technicolor. "Every time we access a memory, we rewrite it a little bit. "These people have the best intentions. They want to help this family. But you know, they're coming at it backwards, they've been shown the picture of Amy, and then it matches up with this memory in their mind.' On the theory that Amy was kidnapped and sex-trafficked, Renner claims there is no verified account of a caucasian woman being abducted and trafficked in the Caribbean. A white woman is gonna stand out in Grenada, and it's not worth the risk for the people that do this. "They have plenty of women from the Dominican Republic, from Columbia, from these poor countries, that can go there and make more money than their family could in a year working a couple of weeks for these brothels." Renner met with the Bradley family while researching his book several months ago, but he alleges they cut contact with him after an initial meeting. "I came to care for the Bradley family quite a bit. Iva [Amy's mom] is the type of person that loves hard," he said. "I met with them about a year ago and was invited to their house, and had lunch with them." He claims that before he arrived, Iva told him anyone who is invited into their home was considered family, a comment he did not take lightly and he was hoping to build a relationship with them. "Unfortunately, once they learned that I knew that Amy was gay and that I had spoken to her partners, that was the last contact I had with them," he claims. The U.S. Sun has reached out to Amy's family for comment, but did not hear back. Asked what drew him to the case, Renner said he likes unsolved mysteries that are "giant puzzle boxes." "It could be that they walked away to start a new life. It could be they committed suicide. It could be they were abducted. It could be they were murdered. So everything's on the table. "And those cases intrigue me because they're very rare. And, you know, one of the reasons they're still like that is because they haven't been properly investigated. "So what I like to do is just chip away at some of those other theories and see what's left. "And for me, I've narrowed [it] down, what happened to Amy Bradley ... to the point where I don't believe she ever came off that balcony. "I think it's highly likely that she is responsible for whatever took place there." Renner also previously spoke to The U.S. Sun about the now-debunked theory that Amy was taken from the ship and sex-trafficked by a bass player called Alister Douglas, known then by his nickname "Yellow". He took the same journey as Amy on the Rhapsody of the Seas and tracked Douglas down in Grenada, where the now-reverend granted him a brief interview. Douglas claimed the case had turned his life upside down, and he was still receiving hate from trolls online despite being ruled out by the FBI on more than one occasion. Tearing up, he admitted, "I've lost so many opportunities because of this," explaining that people Google his name and believe he had something to do with Amy going missing.
