They also have a passionate wider fanbase scattered across the country, who display their famous striped shirts as a proud symbol of identity.
But their big-club status has rarely been matched by on-field success, with several stints in the second tier testing the patience of long-suffering supporters.

On the subject of success, one big difference between Betis and Newcastle is that the former have a major rival in their own city.
And it is cross-town Sevilla who have hogged the headlines in recent years by winning the Europa League SEVEN times since 2006.
However, Betis are the better supported of the two clubs, as Seville native Javier Gancedo explained: 'Within the city, there's an even split between Betis and Sevilla fans.
'But across the rest of Andalusia, nobody else supports Sevilla because they are the traditional team of the city's ruling class who controlled everything.
'On the other hand, Betis have always been for the working class. And their green and white colours are the same as the Andalusia flag, showing how they represent people from all over the region.'
Andalusia saw around 1.5 million people emigrate there during the 1950s and 1960s to find work in cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
They took their love for Betis with them.
Andalusia is culturally unique — tapas and flamenco, hot sun and hotter emotions, fed by strong traces of Muslim and Gypsy cultures.
That mix comes together — expressive and creative football is a given, best embodied in the club's greatest ever player, Joaquin.

Caoimhin Kelleher: Brentford move 'a long time coming'

Caoimhin Kelleher is confident that playing on a weekly basis in the Premier League will help him to hold onto the Ireland No. 1 jersey. The Premier League winning keeper with Liverpool made his long awaited move to Brentford this week. signing a five-year deal with the Bees after six seasons at Anfield, where he made 67 appearances. "Obviously, it's been a long time coming," Kelleher told RTÉ Sport after tonight's 1-1 draw with Senegal. "Really happy to get it over the line and get it done. And looking forward to get going over there. "(I've) played well for Ireland. I think I've done well enough to keep the No. 1 position. I need to keep playing well to keep the position. But no doubt playing week in, week out is going to help my cause, for sure." Having vied with Gavin Bazunu for the starting keeper jersey under Stephen Kenny, Kelleher has been the undisputed first choice under Heimir Hallgrimsson. Tonight saw another strong display, with Kelleher pulling off a spectacular fingertip save from Krepin Diatta to preserve Ireland's lead in the second half. He was ultimately beaten from close range by Ismaila Sarr although only on the rebound after saving with his feet from Cherif Ndiaye. Despite the late concession of the equaliser, Kelleher was satisfied with the performance and the direction of travel under the manager. "It was a big save (from Diatta). You have to make those big saves if you want to be a top goalkeeper. I want to keep doing that and helping the team. "We're disappointed to concede and not keep a clean sheet. But throughout the game, we were solid and we limited them to a few chances from crosses. We've come in there a bit disappointed not to win the game which is a good sign. They're one of the best nations in the world. It's very positive and we're going in the right direction. "We were brilliant in the first half. We sustained attacks really well. We didn't give them any chance to counter attack and we created a good amount of chances as well."

World Cup round-up: Italy off to horror start after 3-0 loss in Norway

Italy made a terrible start to their World Cup qualification campaign after being brushed aside 3-0 by Erling Haaland's Norway. All three goals arrived in the first half, with Alexander Sorloth putting Norway ahead inside the first quarter of an hour before Antonio Nusa doubled their lead after 34 minutes. Two Premier League players combined in the 42nd minute as Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard teed up Manchester City talisman Haaland to score in the pouring rain in Oslo. Italy have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups and this was a major setback for the four-time champions at the outset of their campaign to reach the 2026 edition in North America. Norway made it three wins from three to remain top of Group I, with Israel second after coming from behind to see off Estonia 3-1 thanks to two goals from Dan Biton and Mohammad Abu Fani's penalty. Substitutes Franjo Ivanovic and Andrej Kramaric each scored twice as Croatia claimed a thumping 7-0 win in Gibraltar in Group L. Mario Pasalic and Ante Budimir struck in the first half before the visitors ran riot in the second half thanks to a brace each from Ivanovic and Kramaric, with Ivan Perisic also on the scoresheet. Luka Modric made a national record-extending 187th appearance from the bench, with the 39-year-old introduced in the 64th minute as Croatia started their campaign in ideal fashion. Czech Republic sit top of the group after goals from Adam Hlozek and Patrik Schick helped them to a 2-0 win over Montenegro. In Group J, Ezgjan Alioski's late strike earned North Macedonia a surprise 1-1 draw at home to Belgium, who had gone ahead through Maxim De Cuyper. Wales sit top of the group after Joe Rodon, Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore secured a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein.
