'It was a tough semifinal match against a great opponent,' Rotondi said. 'The series is wide open, and we are going home to define it in front of our fans.'
Cruz Azul beat Club America in the previous round to progress to the semifinals for the first time since 2022 and now is aiming to equal its crosstown rival as the winningest club in the region with seven titles.
La Maquina is seeking its first regional crown since 2013-14 when they beat Tijuana.
Tigres, meanwhile, advanced over MLS LA Galaxy and is trying to capture their first CONCACAF title since 2020.
The second leg will be played next Thursday at the Olympic stadium in Mexico City.

Serbian soccer club Partizan punished by UEFA for fans' Kosovo banner and offensive chants

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA fined Partizan Belgrade more than $100,000 on Wednesday and ordered part of the Serbian club's stadium closed at one European game for fans' racist and political statements. Fans displayed a 'Kosovo is Serbia' banner and chanted discriminatory and offensive slogans at two home games in Conference League qualifying rounds. The order to close a 10,000-seat section of Partizan's stadium will apply at the team's next home game in a European competition. Partizan faces possible elimination on Thursday in Edinburgh, trailing 2-0 from the first leg against Hibernian in the Conference League third qualifying round. The charges included 'racist and/or discriminatory behavior,' displaying an illicit banner and throwing objects, UEFA said. Serbia has never recognized the declaration of independence in 2008 by Kosovo, the neighboring former province which has been a member of UEFA and world soccer body FIFA since 2016.

Chelsea completes the signing of Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax

LONDON (AP) — Club World Cup champion Chelsea has completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax in a deal worth a reported 37 million pounds ($49 million). The 19-year-old Hato, who has been capped six times by his country, has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He becomes the Blues' eighth signing of the summer transfer window. 'I'm very excited,' Hato, who can operate in central defense or at left back, told the Premier League club's website. 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy.' Hato joined Ajax's academy from hometown club Sparta Rotterdam in 2018 and signed his first professional contract aged 16 four years later. He scored four goals in 111 appearances for the Eredivisie team, with his international debut coming as a substitute in a 6-0 win against Gibraltar in November 2023. Chelsea starts its Premier League season on Aug. 17 at home to Crystal Palace. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
