Wave of syringe attacks hits France's street music festival, over 140 victims reported
PARIS, June 23 — French police have detained twelve suspects after 145 people reported being pricked with syringes during the country's annual street music festival, officials said Sunday.
Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting 'unprecedented crowds' in Paris.
Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities.
The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital.
Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault.
'Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests,' the ministry said.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents across Paris, prosecutors said.
All three reported feeling unwell.
Across France, 12 suspects have been arrested, the interior ministry said. Among them were four people in the south-western city of Angouleme suspected of having targeted around 50 victims, said a police source.
Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris.
Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen.
Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured.
The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that 'no major incident has been reported'. — AFP

'The syndicate allegedly offered lucrative returns on initial investments to gain victims' trust to continue investing through a self-developed app. 'It operated under two unregistered companies, and police are currently investigating another company believed to have been used to facilitate fund transfers from victims,' he told a press conference today. Muhamad Farid said checks on the application revealed a total of 2,597 individuals believed to have fallen victim to the scam, comprising 2,482 Malaysians, 111 Indonesians and one each from India, Mongolia, South Africa and Bhutan. 'During the raid, police seized three computer monitors, two CPUs, six laptops, 14 mobile phones and a Wi-Fi modem, all believed to have been used in the illegal operations, with a total seizure value estimated at RM45,000,' he said. He said none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs. 'The suspects were initially remanded for one day and released on police bail, but have since been re-arrested in connection with a report lodged in Taman Melawati,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013. — Bernama

PARIS, June 23 — Former France midfielder Paul Pogba, who wants to resume his career after a doping ban, said on French television on Sunday he is 'talking' with a club, which sources close to him said was Monaco. The 32-year-old also said he had re-established contact with his brother Mathias, sentenced to a year in prison last December for his involvement in a plot to extort €13 million (RM64 million) from the 2018 World Cup winner. Disneyland Paris hosts €130,000 staged wedding for Ukrainian girl, now ‘groom' and organiser under fraud probe
PARIS, June 23 — French police were on Sunday probing the circumstances of a bizarre stunt at Disneyland outside of Paris, with a group of adults suspected of hiring the theme park and paying hundreds of extras to stage a fake marriage for a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl. Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called 'marriage' was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney 'princess' for the day. 'The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras' invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. 'So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding,' he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them – suspected of fraud and money laundering – was extended on Saturday evening. They are the so-called 'groom' who is believed to be behind the event, 22 years old and 'presumed to be British', and a Latvian woman, 24, said a source close to the case. However, the other two people detained – a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman, and a 55-year-old Latvian man – were released. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that 'she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts,' the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros (US$150,000) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint.
