Three held in Jeedimetla ATM theft case, property worth ₹20 lakh seized
The accused have been identified as Yasib Hussain alias Asif Haarun Khan, 28, a labourer from Palwal district, Haryana; Aamir Ansari, 24, a resident of Hyderabad; and Md. Abed, 31 from Nuh district, Haryana. They were arrested on Thursday by a joint team of CCS Balanagar and Jeedimetla law and order police.
The arrests come after a theft of ₹34.71 lakh from an HDFC ATM at Markhandeya Nagar, which was looted using gas cutters on the intervening nights of July 8 and 9.
According to Jeedimetla police, the gang had a history of targeting ATMs across multiple states, relying on a methodical and well-rehearsed modus operandi. They conducted recces of ATM kiosks with external shutters, disabled CCTV surveillance, used gas cutters to breach machines, and escaped on stolen two-wheelers. In this case, they abandoned one such vehicle in Gummadidala and later stole another from Kamareddy before fleeing to Adilabad, where they again ditched the vehicles and split up, returning to their native States in trucks.
The investigation involved combing through footage from over 500 CCTV cameras to track the suspects' movements. Technical and human intelligence eventually led to the identification and arrest of the accused.
The trio is currently booked in at least four criminal cases across Jeedimetla and Gummadidala police stations. They are also linked to over 30 past offences, including house burglaries, ATM break-ins, and vehicle thefts in various states.
Yasib Hussain has previously served a seven-year prison sentence for multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA) in Kotwali police station of Madhya Pradesh, while Aamir Ansari, convicted for 20 years in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case, is currently out on bail.

2006 train blasts: Bombay HC to pronounce verdict on death confirmation pleas today
Over five months after it reserved verdict on death confirmation pleas filed by the state and appeals by the accused against their conviction in the 7/11 train blasts case of 2006, the Bombay High Court will pronounce the judgement Monday. After conducting hearings over six months, special bench of Justices Anil S Kilor and Shyam C Chandak on January 31 this year reserved its verdict on pleas filed in the high court. In 2015, the special court convicted the accused who have been in jail for over 18 years. On July 11, 2006, a series of bombs ripped through seven western suburban coaches of a train, killing 189 commuters and injuring 824. After an over eight-year trial, a special court under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) in October 2015 awarded death penalty to five of the convicts and life terms to seven others. Death row convicts Kamal Ansari from Bihar, Mohammad Faisal Ataur Rahman Shaikh from Mumbai, Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddiqui from Thane, Naveed Hussain Khan from Secunderabad and Asif Khan from Jalgaon in Maharashtra were found guilty of planting the bombs. Those awarded life term were Tanveer Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim Ansari, Mohammed Majid Mohammed Shafi, Shaikh Mohammed Ali Alam Shaikh, Mohammed Sajid Margub Ansari, Muzammil Ataur Rahman Shaikh, Suhail Mehmood Shaikh and Zameer Ahmed Latiur Rehman Shaikh. One of the accused, Wahid Shaikh, was acquitted by the trial court after nine years in jail. The Maharashtra government in 2015 approached the HC with pleas seeking confirmation of death penalty granted to five convicts. On the other hand, the convicts filed appeals challenging the special court order. Ansari, one of the convicts on death row, died due to Covid-19 in Nagpur prison in 2021. As the accused sought speedy disposal of the matter, the HC in July 2023, constituted a special bench led by Justice Kilor, which conducted regular hearings through more than 75 sittings. The lawyers representing the convicts argued that their 'extra-judicial confessional statements' obtained by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) through 'torture' were inadmissible under the law. They also argued that the accused were falsely implicated, innocent and were languishing in jail for 18 years without substantial evidence and their prime years were gone in incarceration. The appellants said that the trial court erred in convicting them and therefore the said order be set aside. The Maharashtra government opposed the appeals by convicts and claimed that the probing agency had provided sufficient evidence to establish it was 'rarest of the rare' case to sentence the accused to death penalty.

Nashik city police to soon get two new forensic vans
Nashik: The Nashik city and rural police will soon receive forensic vans to improve evidence collection at crime scenes involving offences punishable by seven years or more. Senior officers from both city and rural police have confirmed that each police division will get one forensic van. These vehicles will enable forensic experts from the directorate of forensic science laboratory to reach crime scenes and gather crucial evidence. In Dec 2023, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. The introduction of these new criminal laws has significantly changed policing practices. Previously, in serious cases such as murder, the police conducted the panchanama (crime scene documentation) with assistance from forensic experts. Now, under section 23 of the BSA, a four-minute videography of the crime scene panchanama must be recorded and uploaded to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) directly from the scene. Currently, there is one forensic van with the city police and two with the rural police that are insufficient. In view of this, the forensic vans are being provided by the govt, which will enable swift panchanama and related legal procedures. DCP (HQ) Chandrakant Khandvi said the city police commissionerate would receive new forensic vans soon, which will be of great utility considering the city's expanding expanse.

25-yr-old labourer arrested for ‘sexual assault' of 4-yr-old
1 2 3 Guwahati: In an extensive search operation, which lasted for four days, Guwahati police late on Saturday arrested a 25-year-old man from Assam's Dhubri district for allegedly sexually assaulting a four-year-old minor girl. According to police, the accused had been working as a construction labourer in Guwahati and had allegedly abused the minor on July 16. Officer-in-charge of the designated police station, Uttam Tamang, said the accused had fled the scene immediately after committing the crime, before a case was registered against him on the same day, following a complaint filed by the girl's mother. "During the course of investigation, we traced him to Dhubri from where he was taken into custody," Tamang said. Following his arrest, the accused was brought back to Guwahati and was produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (Metro). He has been charged under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the recently implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. Sub-inspector Abdul Momin, who led the operation, said the accused had been working in Guwahati for over two months. The victim lived near a construction site and was often seen playing in the area, which is when the accused allegedly committed the heinous act. "We left on Thursday and apprehended him on Saturday night, where he was hiding in a remote area in Dhubri," the officer added.
