ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, has honoured Emirati runner Salem Abdullah Al Hashmi, a member of the Abu Dhabi Running Team, in recognition of his remarkable achievement in completing the Abbott World Marathon Majors — one of the most prestigious and challenging series in the global long-distance running calendar.Al Hashmi successfully completed all six races in the series with an average finish time of under three hours.The major marathons in which Al Hashmi participated include the New York Marathon in November 2023, the Boston Marathon in April 2024 where he achieved his fastest time of 2 hours and 53 minutes, followed by the Berlin Marathon in September 2024, the Chicago Marathon in October 2024, the Tokyo Marathon in March 2025, and the London Marathon in 2025.In addition to these achievements, Al Hashmi also participated in several other international and regional races, including the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, the Dubai Marathon, the Barcelona Marathon, and the Valencia Marathon — reflecting a distinguished and accomplished athletic career.During the meeting, His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised Al Hashmi for his exceptional dedication and efforts, noting that this achievement embodies the spirit of determination and perseverance that defines the Emirati people and their ability to represent the nation at the highest international levels. His Highness emphasised that Al Hashmi's outstanding performance in this elite global series serves as an inspiration to young athletes and further strengthens the role of both community and competitive sports within the UAE.His Highness affirmed that supporting national talents across all sectors — particularly in sports — remains a top priority for the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in line with the vision of the wise leadership, which continues to invest in empowering athletes and promoting excellence.He further stressed that success stories like that of Al Hashmi reflect the fruitful outcomes of investment in grassroots and professional sports alike. They also serve as evidence of Emiratis' ability to compete and succeed in the world's toughest athletic arenas, thanks to the nation's supportive environment and strategic direction.His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan also received members of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council team and commended their exceptional efforts in organising impactful community events. His Highness highlighted the important role such events play in raising awareness about the benefits of sport, encouraging active and healthy lifestyles, and discovering and nurturing local talent within a motivating and supportive atmosphere. He expressed his appreciation to all teams and departments for their unwavering dedication and commitment to fulfilling the emirate's ambitious sporting and social objectives.For his part, Al Hashmi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the honour, affirming that the unwavering support of the UAE's leadership and the continuous encouragement of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council played a vital role in turning this sporting dream into reality. He described his participation in the marathons of New York, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo and London as a unique experience and a significant challenge that contributed immensely to his athletic development and global exposure.Al Hashmi also acknowledged the importance of the support and encouragement he received from his teammates in the Abu Dhabi Running Team, in addition to his regular participation in the community races organised by Abu Dhabi Sports Council. These races, he noted, offer an ideal environment for nurturing talent and are a major driver for excellence and commitment in sport.Al Hashmi, who works as an engineer at TAQA Distribution, began his athletic journey as a football player in the youth categories of Al Wahda Club, before transitioning into recreational running.
Over time, he has evolved into one of the UAE's leading marathon athletes, successfully balancing a professional career with sporting achievements — making him a role model in combining personal ambition with national pride.

5 Aug 2025 22:12 AL AIN (WAM) The inaugural Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025 has concluded its three-day schedule at ADNEC Centre Al Ain with outstanding by International Vision Sports Management (IVSM) under the banner of Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP), the event brought together more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries to the Al Ain Region and has been widely praised for its world-class organisation, international turnout, and high competitive in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the event marked a significant step forward in Al Ain Region's emergence as a global venue for top-tier sporting General for Tourism at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, said, 'The Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship reflects our commitment to supporting world-class sporting events that inspire and engage. Sport is a cornerstone of our tourism strategy — it brings communities together, highlights the diversity of our destinations, and draws international visitors to explore beyond the capital. Hosting this championship in Al Ain Region not only celebrated the growing local enthusiasm for combat sports, but also reinforced the area's growing role in shaping Abu Dhabi's dynamic tourism landscape.'General Manager of IVSM, Tareq Al Bahri, added, 'The inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship has been a massive success. The numbers speak for themselves: more than 1,000 athletes from over 120 clubs and academies competed across various categories, supported daily by 25 referees and 40 volunteers.'The energy inside the arena, the professionalism on display, and the support from our community made this a truly special edition. We are grateful to every athlete, referee, volunteer, fan, partner, and academy who contributed to this success. We will be back soon with more exciting grappling events in the near future.'The championship featured youth, amateur, professional, and masters divisions across multiple weight classes, attracting a diverse field of under official AJP Tour regulations, the championship awarded 2,000 ranking points and cash prizes to winners, ensuring a high-performance environment throughout the terms of rankings, the Best Academy (Under-18) title went to the UAE's ADMA International, which secured 49,100 points. Samat Ramazanov Academy from Kazakhstan came second with 12,000 points, followed by Brazil's Melqui Galvao Academy with 8,000 the Best Academy (18+) category, it was an all-Emirati affair. Commando Group, ADMA International, and M.O.D UAE claimed the top three spots with 48,200, 31,640, and 29,360 points, respectively. In the country rankings, the UAE, Brazil, and Russia occupied the top three positions.

The 21-year-old Mexican launched a decisive attack on the steep Alto de Pike climb with 16.5km remaining, distancing the field and holding off the chase to seal a dominant win.'After a really hard day yesterday in San Sebastián, we find again the good legs like the last weeks,' said Del Toro. 'Yesterday was super good, and today also with the team, the guys are trying to fight super well. It is something I am very proud to be part of.''Thanks to the guys, me and Juan are able to fight [for the win] again, and try to do again first and second,' he added. 'It was a super nice day for us, we suffered with the heat and also with the level of the race, but we enjoyed today.'Del Toro's effort was backed up by a textbook team performance. UAE Team Emirates XRG had earlier taken control of the peloton, reining in a 10-man breakaway with strong turns from Marcos Freire, Domen Novak and Jay Vine. Their pace set the stage for a fierce finale as the race reached the base of the Alto de Pike (2km at 9.6%).Juan Ayuso set a brutal tempo on the climb, softening up the competition and paving the way for Del Toro's explosive move. By the summit, Del Toro had opened a 10-second gap. On the descent and across the final flat kilometres, Ayuso marked the chasers – first Alex Aranburu (Cofidis), and later Lidl-Trek riders Héctor Álvarez and Toms Skujiņš – as Del Toro maintained his slender the final uphill drag to the finish in Getxo, Ayuso outsprinted Aranburu to secure second place, ensuring a 1-2 finish for the Emirati team – its 69th win of the season. The result capped a strong weekend in the Basque Country for UAE Team Emirates XRG, after Jan Christen's runner-up finish at Saturday's San Sebastian classic race, where Del Toro also featured with a gritty fifth-place finish.

5 Aug 2025 10:35 GYŐRZÁMOLY (WAM)Emirati junior rider Ali Al Ali achieved a remarkable milestone on Monday, securing second place and the silver medal in the Jet Ski World Championship (Ski Junior 3.3 category), held in the city of Győrzámoly, 13-year-old collected 64 points over three highly competitive rounds, finishing behind Estonia's Ander Hubert Lauri, who secured the first place. Lajos Komonyi of Hungary took third place, while France's Maxime Arthebise came in Al Ali expressed pride in raising the UAE flag on the international stage, extending his gratitude to the UAE Marine Sports Federation for fostering young talent. The Hungary championship is one of the officially sanctioned events in the International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) calendar, aimed at developing junior athletes for progression to major global competitions, including the annual World Finals held in the United States.
