ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ernie Clement homered and Spencer Turnbull worked two scoreless innings to win his Toronto debut as the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
Clement finished with three hits but did not take the field in the ninth at third base after suffering an apparent leg injury. He dove for a grounder in the eighth and needed some attention but finished the inning.

Clement's fourth homer gave Toronto a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Toronto won for the seventh time in eight games and is 22-10 over its last 32.
Turnbull (1-0) worked the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two. He signed with Toronto last month and began the season in the minors. Turnbull played five seasons with Detroit and was with Philadelphia last year. Yariel Rodríguez pitched the ninth for his first major league save.
The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.
Matthew Liberatore (3-6) and gave up five runs, three earned, and eight hits in five innings.
Yohel Pozo's second homer gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the second.

Cardinals infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan didn't play after leaving Tuesday's game with a sore big left toe. The club is awaiting MRI results. He leads the team with a .310 average and 77 hits.

ATLANTA (AP) — Xander Schauffele isn't at East Lake for the first time in his career, the result of a rib injury that cost him two months at the start of the season. He never quite found any momentum in his game with his swing out of sync. 'It would be nice to have three months off. That would be ideal if we were being honest,' Schauffele said at the BMW Championship. 'I feel like I need to get as far away from golf as possible very soon. That's how I feel.' That's not the reality, however. Schauffele had such a big year in the majors last year — winning the PGA Championship and the British Open, top-10 finishes in the other two — that he was among the first to clinch a spot on the Ryder Cup team. Three months? The Ryder Cup starts in 38 days. Schauffele was among the players who confirmed to The Associated Press in July that the U.S. team planned to play at the Procore Championship in Napa, California, the week of Sept. 8-14, two weeks before the Ryder Cup. The exception would be Bryson DeChambeau, suspended when he bolted to Saudi-funded LIV Golf in 2022 and then was among those who sued the PGA Tour. It might also be missing Schauffele. 'I'm not sure,' Schauffele said when asked if he would be there. 'I haven't signed up yet. It would be nice to play, but if I don't think playing is going to help me, then I won't play.' Despite his recovery from a rib injury that led to his swing getting out of sorts, Schauffele extended his cut streak to 71 — exactly halfway to the record held by Tiger Woods. He also managed six finishes in the top 12 and two top 10s in the majors. 'I think I understand more than I did before,' he said. 'The frustration before was more not understanding why I was doing certain things. Now I know why I'm hitting it bad and don't know how to fix it. So, frustration for different reasons. I don't know what's worse.' He kept his attitude in good shape — the California native is renowned for his positive attitude regardless of his results — and he looks forward to sorting it out. 'I love golf. I love trying to figure it out,' he said. 'But it's been a trying year. I definitely need to hit the reset button. The next step will be to come back with a solid plan and stick to it.' Walker Cup Niall Shiels Donegan, the Scottish lad raised in the San Francisco Bay area, had a big week at the U.S. Amateur by going from a 20-for-17 playoff all the way to the semifinals. Francisco Alvarez exits Mets game early with thumb injury in major concern

Try it free WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Francisco Alvarez's season took another bad turn Sunday, as the catcher suffered another injury scare in a 7-3 win over the Mariners in the Little League Classic. Alvarez was removed prior to the eighth inning after injuring his right thumb on a headfirst slide into second in the bottom of the seventh. He'll return to New York and get an MRI on the thumb Monday, manager Carlos Mendoza said. He was checked out by trainers and initially remained in the game before he was replaced by Luis Torrens to start the eighth. 'We don't know what we're dealing with,' the manager said. Alvarez wanted to play catch between innings to see if he could remain in the game, but Mendoza didn't want to risk it. Given Alvarez's history with hand and wrist injuries, this one is 'concerning. I'm not gonna lie. It's the third time, but I'm not gonna sit here and speculate,' Mendoza said. Earlier this year, Alvarez suffered a left hamate fracture, and when he struggled on both sides of the plate coming back from that injury, he was sent down to Triple-A Syracuse. Alvarez also underwent surgery on his left thumb last season. He'd impressed the Mets with both his production and work ethic after the demotion, and his play remained improved after his return to the majors. Alvarez entered Sunday on a 6-for-16 tear, with four extra-base hits, including three homers. Then he added two doubles and a single before leaving the game. Nolan McLean's past few days began with him at Triple-A Syracuse before being called up to make his MLB debut with the Mets on Saturday at Citi Field, then traveling with the team to the Little League Classic in his second day as a major leaguer. 'It was a crazy turn of events for me,' McLean said prior to the Mets facing the Mariners on Sunday night. 'From being in Rochester [with Syracuse] to Citi Field to now Williamsport, I kind of can't believe it.' CHECK OUT THE AND McLean delivered a much-needed boost to the underperforming Mets rotation with 5 ¹/₃ scoreless innings in Saturday's win in Queens. 'Once I got out of the game and then when it was over, the Gatorade bath caught me off guard,' McLean said. 'Hearing the crowd was surreal for me. It was the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of, so that was special.' The 24-year-old allowed just two hits and four walks and struck out eight against the Mariners. He began the year with Double-A Binghamton before moving to Syracuse after five impressive outings, then put up a 2.78 ERA in 16 games (13 starts) at Triple-A before getting called up. Saturday's debut by McLean was highly anticipated, mostly due to how poorly much of the rest of the rotation has pitched lately, while McLean and Brandon Sproat — and more recently Jonah Tong at Triple-A — have impressed in the minors. Tylor Megill took an encouraging step to a return to the rotation in a rehab start Sunday with Double-A Binghamton, as the right-hander whiffed nine in 3 ¹/₃ innings. He threw 55 pitches as he works his way back from an elbow strain that has sidelined him since mid-June. Ryan Helsley, who'd been scored upon in his previous four appearances (seven runs, five earned, in 2 ¹/₃ innings), tossed a scoreless eighth inning. … The start of Sunday's game was delayed by rain. … Luisangel Acuña served as the 27th man for the Mets.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez missing time with injury could ‘throw him off for the rest of the year'

Try it free The Mets hadn't announced the results of Francisco Alvarez's MRI exam as of Monday, a day after the catcher suffered an injury to his right thumb while diving into second base during Sunday's win over Seattle, but they know how much they can't afford to lose him for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, they've had experience with that before, a history Carlos Mendoza noted Sunday night, when he acknowledged there was 'concern' over the thumb. Alvarez had surgery on his left thumb last year after bracing himself when he fell on the bases and fractured his hamate bone on a swing this spring. Both injuries have been a part of a downward trajectory in Alvarez's young career that resulted in him being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in June. But after compiling an OPS of just .652 through 35 games before being sent to Syracuse, Alvarez returned with a flourish a month later. Following Sunday's three-hit game, Alvarez had an OPS of 1.054 with 11 extra-base hits in 21 games since being recalled. And he'd been even hotter of late, going 9-for-20 with six extra-base hits in his past five starts behind the plate. 'Whatever he did in the minors — or whatever they did with him — worked,' one National League scout said Monday. 'But something like this could throw him off for the rest of the year. We've seen it with him before. It can take him a while to get going again.' Without Alvarez, the Mets would have to turn again to Luis Torrens, a capable backup, but of the 36 catchers with at least 220 plate appearances this season, just two have a lower OPS than Torrens' .581. The Mets likely can't afford any more slips, given their place in the standings. They entered Monday in second place in the NL East and third in the wild-card standings and begin a three-game series against the last-place Nationals in Washington on Tuesday, followed by three at fourth-place Atlanta. Then they have to host the first-place Phillies and third-place Marlins before trips to front-running Detroit, as well as Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Francisco Lindor was named NL Player of the Week on Monday. The shortstop had gone hitless in five straight games, part of an 0-for-21 skid, before he snapped out of it Aug. 12 against the Braves. And over his past five games, Lindor has done nothing but hit. He's had five consecutive multi-hit games, going 13-for-21 with three doubles, three homers, seven RBIs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases. The Mets lost three of those five games, but typically, Lindor's success at the plate mirrors that of the team. CHECK OUT THE AND In wins this season, he has an OPS of .991, compared to .535 in losses. The Mets announced Monday they requested waivers to grant Paul Blackburn his unconditional release. Blackburn had been designated for assignment to open a roster spot for Nolan McLean. Acquired a year ago from the A's, Blackburn was sidelined by right knee inflammation and didn't make his season debut until June 2. He had a 6.85 ERA in seven games, four starts.
