Driver escapes sinking car after Tesla falls off ferry near Montreal

Yahoo2 days ago
A car fell off a ferry in the Montreal area on Wednesday afternoon, but its driver managed to escape the sinking vehicle and make it to shore.
The car, a Tesla, fell into the water around 5:20 p.m. as it was disembarking from the Paule II, a small ferry that carries six cars between Île-Bizard and Laval, just north of Montreal.
A Laval police spokesperson said one of the ferry's mooring lines detached as cars were disembarking, causing the ferry to drift away from the dock. Police say the Tesla fell into the gap.
A 67-year-old man was at the wheel of the vehicle at the time. He managed to escape the car before it sank and a ferry employee jumped into the water to help him make it to shore.
He was transported to the hospital to be treated for shock.
The car has been removed from the water and is considered a total loss, according to police.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said in a news release it was sending a team to investigate the incident.

Stellantis names new North American dealer strategy leader

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Stellantis appointed Jason Stoicevich to lead dealer strategy and performance in North America, a company spokesperson confirmed in an email to Automotive Dive. Stoicevich will report directly to Tim Kuniskis, who recently was named to head the automaker's American brands and the revival of the company's SRT performance division, the spokesperson said. In a LinkedIn post, Stoicevich said he rejoined the company as SVP, dealer strategy and performance. Prior to rejoining Stellantis, Stoicevich had been working as VP of sales at Sierra Automotive Group since July 2024, per his LinkedIn profile. Stoicevich spent several years with Stellantis and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Between January 2018 and January 2021, he was director of the California Business Center for FCA. Stoicevich also served as chairman, president and CEO of Stellantis Canada between February 2023 and February 2024. His appointment follows a string of high-profile leadership changes at Stellantis over the past year as part of an effort to turnaround the struggling automaker. In December, former CEO Carlos Tavares resigned amid falling revenue and shrinking market share in North America. In February, the automaker named a new CEO for its Jeep brand. The company in May named former Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa as its global CEO who the automaker said has a track record of growing vehicle sales and strengthening its U.S. operations. Filosa began his tenure as Stellantis CEO on June 23 and announced a new leadership team on the same day. Recommended Reading Stellantis taps Ram CEO as new head of its American brands

Driver in his 70s dies after car crashes on to railway track

A driver in his 70s has died after his car crashed on to railway tracks, police said. North Yorkshire Police received reports at 3.19pm on Friday that a car was on the line near Stray Rein in Harrogate. Officers found a silver VW Golf on the tracks with one person inside. The driver, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the vehicle was travelling in York Place before it left the road and went down the railway embankment. Officers are 'appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage taken in the area, to come forward as a matter of urgency'. They asked anyone with information to email mcit@ or call North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference 12250132761. Superintendent Andy Nunns said: 'We will continue to work with Network Rail and the British Transport Police to minimise disruption. 'My thoughts at this time remain very much with the man's family and I would like to thank the public for their patience.'
