How much money does Indianapolis 500 winner get? What we know about 2025 purse

Yahoo25-05-2025

A sunny Sunday afternoon will see 33 of the fastest drivers in the world compete for the ultimate prize in American open-wheel racing: the Indianapolis 500.
The historic race is one of the biggest events in the motorsports world and mentioned in the same breath as NASCAR's Daytona 500, Formula 1's Monaco Grand Prix and endurance racing's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Winning the Indy 500 is one of the greatest achievements any driver can reach.
For the last two years, Josef Newgarden's reigned supreme at the iconic 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The two-time IndyCar champion became the first driver in 22 years to win back-to-back Indy 500s with his last-lap pass on Pato O'Ward in 2024.
His win in 2023 came in similar fashion with a last-lap pass on Marcus Ericsson on a last-lap restart. This year, he has a shot at history to become the first driver to win three Indy 500 races in a row.

DAVID LETTERMAN: Former late-night host has storied history with Indy 500
Hundreds of thousands of people will be in Speedway, Indiana, to see if Newgarden makes history, another prior winner takes the checkered flag or if a new winner will emerge. Rookie Robert Schwartzman starts from pole position - the first rookie to do so since 1983.
Whoever wins will have their name in IndyCar glory and enjoy the iconic bottle of milk in victory lane. That tradition began in 1936 and the American Dairy Association of Indiana will provide the winner with a bottle at the completion of the hours-long race.
But that's not all the winner will receive. Here's what we know about this year's Indy 500 purse:
The winner's purse has increased steadily in recent years. Newgarden earned $3.666 million in 2023 for his win and that went up to $4.288 million in 2024. His second victory purse included a bonus for being a repeat winner.
Organizers do not announce the specifics for the purse until after the race, but we have a good idea of what it could be. If Newgarden wins again, his purse would be slightly bigger than someone else's due to another rollover bonus.
All drivers can expect at least $3.8 million which would be in the result of no increase from last year and no rollover bonus.
Helio Castroneves' win in 2009 set the record for the most prize money at $3.048 million, and the winner's purse stayed at that total for years. Ericsson's win in 2022 broke that record at $3.1 million before Newgarden's winnings.
The total purse is determined by multiple factors including sponsors, television networks and sanctioning body fees. Newgarden's $4.288 million in winnings last year came out of a $18.456 million total purse.
Yes. Final order at the checkered flag determines the winnings and every driver receives some money. The polesitter also gets a large cut of the total purse and drivers earn extra money for each lap led.
Considering that it costs $1-2 million per entry, some drivers who finish farther down the order could lose money on this year's race.

The Irishman, chasing his first major victory since 2019 at The Open, got off to a rough start at Oakmont Country Club, sitting at 2-over par through seven holes when he reached the drivable par-4 17th hole. Advertisement That's when his frustrations hit a boiling point. Lowry tried to chip his ball out of the thick rough but his ball barely moved and a microphone paid the price. Lowry, who finished at 4-over 39 through the first nine holes, added three bogeys and two double bogeys on his final nine holes. His highlight of the day was an eagle on the par-4 third hole where he holed out from 160 yards out. Lowry was considered one of the favorites in the event after he held the 54-hole lead in 2016, the last time the US Open was held at Oakmont. Shane Lowry tossed a microphone in frustration. Shane Lowry finished his opening round of the U.S. Open at 9-over. Getty Images 'It is exhausting,'' Lowry said earlier this week. 'I'm not going to do much else today. Just a lot of rest.' McIlroy, fresh off completing golf's Grand Slam after his Masters win in April, said, 'It felt impossible.' The Northern Irishman, who won the U.S. Open in 2011 at the Congressional Country Club, finished with a 4-over 74. Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Open champion, also struggled Thursday and wrapped his opening round at 3-over 73.

Fernando Alonso Sends Strong Message to Lewis Hamilton's Critics

Fernando Alonso Sends Strong Message to Lewis Hamilton's Critics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fernando Alonso has come to Lewis Hamilton's defense amid mounting criticism surrounding the seven-time world champion's challenging first season at Ferrari. Advertisement Hamilton, still searching for his podium in red, has faced growing doubts as Ferrari continues to underdeliver. But ahead of the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, Alonso offered a timely reminder of just how quickly the narrative can change in Formula 1. 'Lewis is a very good driver,' Alonso said, responding to questions about the scrutiny facing his longtime rival. 'On circuits like Canada, he is able to exploit all his strengths.' It was a pointed show of support from a man who knows Hamilton better than most. The two battled through one of the sport's most intense intra-team rivalries at McLaren in 2007 and have remained key figures on the grid ever since. While Hamilton has shown flashes of pace this season, consistency has eluded him. The Ferrari package has failed to deliver, and the pressure of performing for Formula 1's most iconic team has added another layer of difficulty. But Alonso believes the situation is far from hopeless. Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2024 F1 testing in Fox - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images 'He's suffering now,' the Spaniard admitted, 'but he can turn the situation around very quickly.' Advertisement That message carries weight coming from a driver who has repeatedly reinvented himself across two decades in the sport. It also speaks to the respect Hamilton still commands inside the paddock, even during one of the toughest stretches of his career. Alonso also stressed the importance of patience, noting: 'After 24 years we'll do the math.' With more than half the season still ahead, he suggested Hamilton has plenty of time to silence the critics. View the original article to see embedded media. Ferrari, meanwhile, sits behind McLaren in pace, consistency and championship standings. While Charles Leclerc has managed three podiums so far, Hamilton's adjustment to life in Maranello has been more turbulent. Advertisement But if the two-time world champion's words are any indication, few in the paddock are counting him out just yet. Hamilton may be under pressure but the fire, and the belief from those who've raced him hardest is still very much alive.
