Iconic '80s Rocker Dead at 79, Leaving Band ‘Devastated'
In the heyday of rock bands, one British heavy metal band captivated audiences in a film documenting their first United States tour in six years.
There was something different about this 'rockumentary,' though. The band–and their comedy of errors documentary–was entirely a farce.
This is Spinal Tap, the beloved Rob Reiner 1984 mockumentary, returned to the headlines last March with the announcement that Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will hit theaters on September 12. Before its satirical 'end' on the silver screen, though, the much-adored rockers have another, far more serious, end to contend with.
David Kaff, 79, known for his portrayal of fan-favorite character Viv Savage, keyboardist in This is Spinal Tap, passed away on July 11. His current band, Mutual of Alameda's Wild Kingdom, announced his death on Facebook with a touching tribute.
'Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday,' the band wrote. 'We are devastated by this event.'
The message went on to say, 'David always had a kind word and a quick wit that would slay you where you stand. Then he'd make you smile doing it! RIP dear brother.' The band did not share a cause of death.
Rolling Stone reported that Kaff was not slated to appear in the long-awaited This is Spinal Tap sequel, despite boasting one of the most memorable lines in the original film. When asked what his life's motto is, Kaff as Savage says, "Have a good time… all the time."
Born in Kent in south-east England as David Kaffinetti, Kaff started his career in rock 'n roll as a keyboardist with the progressive rock band 'Rare Bird'. He followed this tenure with a spot in the short-lived 'supergroup' Natural Gas in 1975 according to a BAM interview with the rockstar in 1991, and was even a studio artist for Chuck Berry in 1972, People reported.
Kaff went on to land the part of Viv Savage in This is Spinal Tap, a role that became so synonymous with his name that any time he changed his address, he had to also submit change of address paperwork for Viv Savage. 'There really are people who write to me and put Viv Savage on the envelope!" he told BAM with an emphatic laugh.
Kaff performed several live shows with the fictional Spinal Tap band after the film's release, including a Saturday Night Live performance in 1984, before continuing his music career with bands like the Oakland-based Model Citizenz, according to BAM.
Despite his prolific musical career, Kaff did not mind his fictional character's popularity.
'I played him very close to my heart," he told BAM, "just a little bit dimmer. If people like that character, chances are they'll like me."

Interestingly, Guggenheim's Madisynn almost crossed over with Agatha Harkness and her coven, but Agatha All Along head writer Jac Schaeffer just couldn't make it work. 'I really wanted to include Madisynn because I think she's so deeply funny, and she talked about Jake the goat,' Schaeffer recalled in a November House of R podcast. 'We were all banging our heads against the wall trying to figure out, 'How do we make the goat our literal and figurative gateway to getting Madisynn on the [Witches] Road?' and it just didn't work. Clearing the Way: Robin Kaye's Legacy as a Champion for Music Supervision
The entertainment industry remains deep in mourning over the death of Robin Kaye, the longtime music supervisor for American Idol, who was found murdered along with her husband, Thomas Deluca, in their home in an apparent double homicide. Kaye's contemporaries are remembering her as a consummate professional who had a keen talent for working with creatives, and for her stewardship as an advocate in championing the music supervision profession as a whole. 'She was working with the Guild early, she produced our award show, she believed in the goal of helping improve the craft and make sure the bigger supervisors were helping the smaller ones.' Jill Meyers, who spent over a decade as music supervisor on rival music contest The Voice, said she shared a close bond together with Kaye and Ginsburg, adding that 'it felt like we worked for each other, three people from competing shows who loved each other and constantly did our best to help and boost the others up.' Maureen Crowe, the Guild's founding president, called Kaye 'such a bright light in our community,' lauding her efforts as an early Guild board member and vice president, and for her work on building out the Guild of Music Supervisors Award show. 'She was empowered with an incredible skill set to make great things happen, and she put those skills to work in the service of others to empower them and help them succeed,' Crowe said. 'Her legacy will continue inspire. She and Tom will more sorely missed.' While Kaye's reach in the business was wide, those successes she'd cultivated for others is most apparent with Idol, which had imparted her with more influence compared to the more typical music supervision assignment. Aside from the incredibly high number of clearances she had to get done for the show, while a more typical program selects songs merely to soundtrack a particular moment, on a singing contest, those clearances can decide an artist's career. 'If they get the right song, that can be the difference in having a career or not,' McHugh says. 'In a way, Robin's work was a gateway for nurturing artists' careers. Sometimes artists got 30 seconds, a minute to get a thumbs up or down, Robin was the kind of person that would always go to the wall and make sure that if that's the song that someone wanted, she would try to get there if she could.' Idol judge Randy Jackson said on Instagram this week that Kaye 'consistently went the extra mile, meticulously ensuring songs were placed and cleared for the show.' One of her more famous cases was securing Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' for Adam Lambert in 2009, a notable success given how notoriously protective Zeppelin is about permitting its music for use on film and TV. 'We always were talking about Led Zeppelin because everybody knew that we couldn't do Led Zeppelin,' Kaye recalled in an interview in 2009. 'I think Adam brought it up and I said, 'no, you can't do it.' When we started really seeing how talented Adam was, I had a feeling they would consider him. I couldn't have asked them just in general 'let us do it this year.' They wouldn't have said yes, but it made sense with Adam.' 'It's always worth asking,' Kaye continued. 'I never take a 'no' from anybody as a permanent 'no.' This business changes too much and situations change.' As Kaye's longtime friend Jacquie Perryman, a consultant for Paul McCartney's MPL Music Publishing, remembers: 'She was particularly good at advising artists and creatives. She could really help find music for the younger kids who maybe didn't know the older songs.' Perryman says Kaye was like a sister to her, adding that they first worked together in the '90s after she hired Kaye at PolyGram to build out the label's licensing department. Kaye, Perryman says, was 'completely respected and liked because she was an authentic person who didn't put on airs.' 'I screamed when I heard the news, it's so devastating,' she says. 'Robin and Tom were in the prime of their lives, they were lovely people who were good to everyone around them.' Both McHugh and Perryman emphasize that it was Kaye's unmatched relationships with music publishers that gave her an edge in the business. 'She could actually clear amazing songs for the show because her reputation and her relationships were parallel to none,' Perryman says. 'The business has a lot of egos, but she was able to work with everybody. She wasn't a self-promoter at all, she didn't make it about her. She just believed music supervision was a job that people should recognize and respect. And she loved artists, and she loved music.' I Watched Clueless All The Way Through For The First Time, And Wow, What Have I Been Missing Out On?

You know how there are those movies that everyone seems to have seen for years, but you're only just getting around to enjoying them? Yeah, that's how it's been with Clueless for me. Clueless is probably considered one of the best '90s films, but for some odd reason, I never saw the entire film until now. I'm not sure what led to that – maybe I've been too busy trying to keep up to date with all of the big movies on the 2025 movie schedule, or the amount of other award-winning films out there – but Clueless was a movie I just never got around to. However, in honor of its thirtieth anniversary (yes, thirty years), I decided to really sit down and give it a go. And wow, I did not expect to love this film as much as I did. I Always Knew The Movie Was Iconic Let me preface this by saying that I have always known Clueless is iconic. I have for many years. I've even recommended it to people here when I've discussed the film and how it sometimes appears on our list of the best free movies to watch. But truthfully, that was always based on the clips I've seen from years past, or how I've sat down to watch it with family and friends, but never fully sat through the film from beginning to end. In those few instances where I saw clips, I really enjoyed the movie. What led me to think it was already iconic, though, was that it feels like this movie has such a hold on pop culture. There are numerous references from it that we still discuss today. And with that in mind, I knew that if I didn't sit down and physically watch this film from beginning to end, I would never quite understand its greatness. So I did. And what a doozy it was. However, I Think I've Officially Joined The Cult Many movies have shaped who I am as a person. I've talked at length about how much I love the Harry Potter films and how they inspired my passion for fantasy. I've also discussed Legally Blonde and my affection for Reese Witherspoon movies, as they greatly helped me embrace my femininity. However, I am 99% certain that if I had watched Clueless as a kid, this film would have had just as much of an impact on me. When I tell you that this movie roped me in so quickly, I mean it. I fell for this story as quickly as I did Penn State football when I stepped on its campus. I became so engrossed in the world of Clueless that I spent hours researching memes, lines, and more, because I loved it so much. Director Amy Heckerling truly took this movie and made it into the impactful cultural moment it is today, years later, where many people reference it, and it still holds us in its grasp. And now, I am happily a part of it and willing to offer my throat as well. However, there are three distinct reasons why I feel this way. Alicia Silverstone Is An Absolute Star The first is that Alicia Silverstone is an absolute star. I did grow up knowing who Silverstone was, but for years, I never understood why she was such a big name. I had heard about her from my mother, but only from Clueless, and didn't understand why it was such a big deal. But watching her as Cher solidified that for me. She's so good. This movie should have been the film that set her off on a string of mega-hit successes, much like Legally Blonde did for Reese Witherspoon and The Princess Diaries did for Anne Hathaway. However, I realized that Clueless is what Alicia Silverstone is really known for, with some minor appearances in TV shows and other movies. And that really shocked me because she should have been as big as some of her co-stars, like Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd. It's great that a TV series based on the movie is in the works with her returning. The Story Is So Ridiculous That I Can't Help But Love It What also lends Clueless its cult-like status is that the plot is ridiculous, but the fact that it's loosely based on a Jane Austen classic transforms it into something even better. If you didn't know, Clueless is loosely based on Emma, and the plot follows a teenager who is the most popular girl at school and wishes to perform "good deeds" to improve her life and her place in the world. While she tries to help a new student become popular, she starts to question herself about who she is and what she creates. For a film with a deeper meaning beneath its surface-level plot, it's amusing, and the way they play with the story is enjoyable. The jokes all land even now, and for me, that's hard to do with a teen movie that often revolves around '90s jokes and references. But it's still fun, and oh my god, the Clueless quotes are endless. The Fashion Legit Makes Me Want To Reevaluate My Closet The primary reason I've joined the Clueless cult is that I love the fashion. My god, the Clueless fashion is literally everything I could have asked for and more, and it's so dang good. SO good. I'm in love with literally every aspect of it. As someone who doesn't consider herself very fashion-forward, it's been my goal over the last year or so to step outside my comfort zone and try new pieces of clothing I wouldn't normally wear. I've done a good job of that, but this movie made me want to do that so much more. It made me want to rethink my wardrobe entirely. The dresses are fantastic. The combinations are fire. The confidence oozes out of these amazingly-dressed teenagers like sap from the bark of a tree. And it made me want to be more confident in myself. I've never cared about fashion once in my life, and yet, here I am, enjoying the entire closet of Clueless. The costume designer behind this film deserves a raise. I Really Think This Has Become One Of My Favorite Movies In terms of my favorite films, Clueless is now up there, which is honestly something I can't say about many movies I decide to watch years after their release. Often, when I watch a film that everyone has hyped up, it either lives up to expectations or falls dramatically short, mostly the latter. But Clueless lived up to the hype and more. It's somewhat remarkable to finally understand what everyone is talking about when they say this was one of the best films of that decade, yet also a movie that defined a generation. I wish we could have something like this for my generation. Now I feel the need to rewatch again, and again - until I recreate that entire closet from Cher. Solve the daily Crossword
