
Plans approved for 410 student housing rooms in Glasgow
Graham Investment Projects has requested permission from Glasgow City Council to develop the site of a dilapidated office building at 138 Hydepark Street.
The site, which Fresh will operate, will provide accommodation for 410 students across 236 studios and 174 cluster flats across 25 floors.

The proposal was met with objections from concerned local residents who shared concerns over the height and closeness of the development to existing homes.

Residents of the River Heights building at Lancefield Quay also shared concerns over noise, privacy, and light restriction, as the new development will be twice the size of their building.
Aaron Hepburn, who told us earlier this year of the terrifying moment the 'building collapsed' during demolition on the site next door, spoke up at the meeting.
He said: "Our building will be uninhabitable if this is approved. The noise and vibrations from the six-month demolition were bad enough; we can't put up with two or three years of that.
"It was like living in an earthquake zone, with no place to relax and feel safe with your family.
"A ceiling in our building collapsed under the vibrations of the demolition, and we're concerned that there's been damage to our building in that process."

Councillor Angus Millar echoed the residents' concerns and also raised concerns over 'the amount of student accommodation in the city'.
However, councillors on the committee in attendance at the meeting voted in favour of the proposal, and the motion was passed eight to two.
The plans include a reception, roof terraces, a game area and lounge, a cinema, a group study area, a karaoke room, an e-games room, a fitness room, a social laundry, and a quiet study room.
Residents would also have access to cycle storage and be within walking distance of the city centre, SECC, and Anderston train station.
The plans say there would be eight people employed on site once the development is completed.
The Student Accommodation Need and Demand Assessment states: "The site is in the Anderston area, which is outside the areas of over-concentration of student residences."
There are also no listed buildings on the site, and it is not located within a conservation area.
The planning statement reads: "The PBSA accommodation will contribute to the vitality of Glasgow through their demand for cultural activities, independent businesses, and social spaces, boosting footfall and supporting regeneration efforts.
"The diversity of student populations introduces new cultural ideas and traditions, enriching the local identity and creating distinctive, dynamic places."

Ron McClure has been serving hungry customers from all over the world for the past 34 years at Ron's Quality Snax in East Kilbride. I've been a chef for 60 years altogether, and my hands are now very painful and sore. 'There's no cure, but it's just one of those things you get with old age. If I could've carried on, I would have carried on until I was 90 or 100. 'I love it and I have a passion for it. I can't do any more wrapping, tapping, and making it happen. I'm going to miss it dearly.' The social media star explained that it had been his grandson's idea to bring Ron's Quality Snax onto the global platform. (Image: Colin Mearns) Ron added: 'I'm not a technophobe, but I'm rubbish with technology. I was surprised by the way TikTok took off. 'I didn't know how to do it, and my grandson knows, so he said, 'I'll show you papa'. We closed at 1pm that Saturday, we'd cleaned up, and the customers were all away. 'I cooked something, and then he put it on TikTok. My phone was dinging like mad all day. By 5pm on Saturday night, it had half a million views. 'On Sunday morning, it was over one million; it just went viral. My business had suffered greatly during COVID, and TikTok, my goodness, it helped it go up and up. 'It made a difference.' More than two years later, Ron has gained 75,000 followers on TikTok and has amassed 1.2million likes across his videos. He also created a line of merchandise featuring baseball caps and aprons with his branding. Then I was the manager of Buck Rodgers, a sci-fi themed restaurant on Queen Street. 'I opened a restaurant in Bathgate called Chef's Kitchen, and the last thing I did before this was I was the operations manager for Dunkin' Donuts. 'Then I was made redundant, and I decided to open up Ron's Quality Snax. The journey has been good. 'There have been ups and downs, but the business grew and grew. I've got good staff. Glasgow facing £80m financial black hole even with 10% council tax rise
Glasgow City Council is facing a significant £110m budget gap by 2028. Even if the local authority increases council tax by 5% for the next two years, it would still face an £80m black hole. More than £65m of the shortfall is from pressure associated with homelessness, the council's latest financial outlook report said. It comes amid weak economic growth and a downturn in business across the UK and 'significant challenges' in public funding for the Scottish Government. Glasgow's finance director, Robert Emmott, said housing and homelessness remains one of the council's biggest expenses. It was previously reported that Glasgow houses around 4,000 asylum seekers, which the council warned in April is putting too much pressure on the city's services. It was also reported that a decision by the previous UK Government to speed up the processing of asylum claims had led to more people presenting as homeless in Glasgow. Nevertheless, councillors agreed in March to cover the cost of a UK Government decision to speed up the processing of asylum claims for another year. Unless policy changes, the costs of that decision will rise to £43m in 2025/26 and £66m in 2026/27. Mr Emmott's latest report said a 'pause' in both asylum dispersal to Glasgow and the requirement to house asylum applicants from outwith Scotland would reduce estimated costs to £36m in 2025/26 and then to £13m in 2026/27, if implemented from October 2025. Glasgow's city administration committee report will recommend seeking more money and further help from the UK and Scottish Government's on the impact of homelessness within the city. Glasgow City Council has been asked for comment. Glasgow congestion charge risks ‘displacement of business'
It comes as Glasgow City Council is to discuss plans that would also include a charge for the Clyde Tunnel. Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, warned over the move.
