‘Bharat First': EaseMyTrip's official statement as Indian players opt out of India-Pak clash at Legends Championship

Mint19 hours ago
Travel-tech platform EaseMyTrip has issued an official statement addressing its involvement in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). The company confirmed that although it entered into a five-year sponsorship agreement with WCL two years ago, it has decided not to associate with or participate in any matches that involve the Pakistan team.
The travel tech platform emphasised that its position has always been clear. EaseMyTrip supports the India Champions and stands firmly by the team. However, the company maintains that it does not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan.
EaseMyTrip reaffirmed its commitment to Team India, expressing its desire to see the cup brought home.
On Sunday, in a post on X, EaseMyTrip wrote, 'Despite entering into a 5-year sponsorship agreement with the World Championship of Legends (WCL) two years ago, our stance has always been clear--EaseMyTrip will not be associated with or participate in any WCL match involving Pakistan. We proudly continue to support the India Champions and stand firmly by our team. However, as a matter of principle, we do not support or promote any match that includes Pakistan. This position was communicated unambiguously to the WCL team from the beginning. EaseMyTrip supports Team India, but will not engage in any match featuring Pakistan. Let's bring the cup home. Bharat First. Always.'
Meanwhile, the organisers of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) have officially called off the India-Pakistan match and apologised for hurting the sentiments and hopes of people.
In its statement, WCL said that it had announced the India-Pak fixture after a recent volleyball match between the two countries to create happy memories for fans. The tournament says that this may have ended up hurting the feelings of many and caused discomfort to the Indian legends.
In the wake of this, a decision to call off the fixture was taken. WCL further apologised for hurting sentiments.
Earlier, several Indian players like Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan also informed the media that they would not be playing the India-Pakistan game.
In a post on X, Shikhar Dhawan shared an email he had sent to the tournament organisers, stating that the decision not to play against Pakistan had been communicated on May 11. The email cited the prevailing geopolitical situation as the reason behind the decision.
In his post, Dhawan said, 'Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota. (I standby the decision I took on May 11. My country is everything for me and nothing is bigger than the country)'
Set to take place from July 18 to August 2 across Birmingham, Northampton, Leicester, and Leeds, WCL 2025 will showcase legendary cricket stars in a summer extravaganza officially sanctioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Humpy on Song, makes Chess World Cup semis; Divya Holds Harika to play tiebreaks; Heartbreak for Vaishali

1 2 3 Nagpur: India's most experienced Grandmaster and world No.5 Koneru Humpy made China's 19-year-old Yuxin Song dance to her tunes to enter the semifinals of the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, on Sunday. While Humpy split the point with young Song in 53 moves in the second game to clinch the quarterfinal contest 1.5-0.5, to set her semifinal date with an experienced Chinese GM and top seed, Lei Tingjie. The world No.3, Tingjie, ended the campaign of Georgia's Nana Dzagnidze with a 2-0 triumph. Tingjie utilised her opening advantage with the white pieces to register a hard-fought 72-move win over Dzagnidze and entered the semifinal in style by winning both her games in the classical format. The classical battle between compatriots, Divya Deshmukh and D Harika, ended in an entertaining 60-move draw. The all-Indian quarterfinal will now be decided in the tiebreaks to be played in the rapid and blitz formats with different time controls. Another India-China clash saw a marathon game where China's world No.8 Tan Zhongyi ended Vaishali Rameshbabu's campaign. In a marathon 88-move Semi-Slav defense, Vaishali failed to defend with her black pieces, losing the second game and bowing out of the quarterfinals 0.5-1.5. The contest between an experienced Indian GM and China's young International Master (IM) saw a Queen's Pawn Opening game of Chigorin Variation, with Humpy defending an unusual position where Song lined up her pawns by the 19th move. Aiming to come out of that unusual position, Humpy brought her rook into the field and made a dubious move on the 32nd turn. The position protecting Song's kingdom remained the same until the 35th turn when Humpy checked her Chinese opponent, and both exchanged their queens. Humpy then utilised the services of her attacking pawn while bringing her rook into a better position. With Humpy all set to become two pawns up, both players repeated their moves, and the game ended in a draw after 53 moves. Humpy said, "It feels happy to qualify for the semifinal without playing tiebreaks. I could have played better, but in time trouble, I slipped out. I will utilise the rest day in preparing as my semifinal against Tingjie is going to be a very tough match. Being a top seed, she is one of the strongest opponents." In the battle of compatriots, defending with her black pieces against an experienced Harika was always a tough task for Divya. The 19-year-old came under severe time trouble, and despite an advancing pawn in an equal position with both having a rook and three pawns at the 42nd turn, Divya had to compromise more time to bail herself out. She did that by bringing her king to the centre, and both were left with a rook and two pawns in the endgame. Though Divya became a pawn up on the 52nd turn, she was severely low on time, and Harika had placed her king in a better position. Within the next eight moves, both Divya and Harika signed the peace treaty to head into the tiebreaks for a place in the semifinals set to be played between Indian and Chinese masters. India No.3 and 15th ranked Vaishali suffered a heartbreaking defeat against China No.4, Tan. For the second successive day, Vaishali and Tan played out a lengthy game and were the last to finish their contest. Defending with the black pieces against Tan was always a tricky task, but Vaishali successfully brought the position equal in the midgame. A blunder on the 58th turn made Vaishali lose a pawn in an equal position with both having a rook, bishop, and a couple of pawns. On the 73rd move, Vaishali lost her rook and became a piece down with an extra pawn. The 2546 Elo Tan utilised her rook to force Vaishali to resign in the 88th move. With Vaishali's exit, the World Cup semifinals will be a battle between Indian and Chinese masters. The only thing remaining is to identify Tan's opponent — experienced Harika or young Divya.
