Hodgkinson makes stunning return ahead of Worlds

PA Media/DPA Warsaw Keely Hodgkinson made a winning return to action on Saturday at the at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial meeting of Diamond League in Silesia, Poland, in her first race since the Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old Olympic champion was back in action following a 376-day absence and showed she has put her hamstring issues behind her by setting a new 800 metres meeting record of 1 minute 54.74 seconds. Hodgkinson sustained a hamstring injury in February and her return was delayed by a number of setbacks. But the British athlete made a statement in Chorzów ahead of next month's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Hodgkinson finished clear of Lilian Odira from Kenya and Botswana's Oratile Nowe in Silesia with the second fastest time of her career, just 0.13 off her personal best. Hodgkinson told the BBC: 'That was so much fun. It's amazing, I really wanted to have this opportunity. 'I don't have much time to get ready for the Worlds, so I have to put something down.' The men's 100 metres, which featured a top-class field, was won by the world's best performer this year - Kishane Thompson. The Jamaican ran 9.87 seconds to edge out Olympic champion Noah Lyles. The American, who narrowly defeated Thompson in Paris a year ago, managed 9.90. A year on from their historic battle in the Olympic final in Paris, Thompson and Lyles were neck and neck on the line at the 12th Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season, but the Jamaican clocked 9.87 to beat Lyles by 0.03 seconds and equal the meeting record. Pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis cleared 6.10 metres this time, after setting a latest world record on Tuesday in Budapest with 6.29. In the 400 metres hurdles, world record holder Karsten Warholm from Norway shone with a season-leading 46.28.
