Aiden Markram was named ICC Player of the Month for June 2025 after leading South Africa to a WTC win. Hayley Matthews won the women's award for her performance.
South Africa's World Test Championship (WTC)-winning star batter Aiden Markram has been named as the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s Player of the Month for June 2025.
Markram made 136 runs and picked up two wickets to help the Proteas beat Australia at Lord's and end a 27-year wait for a senior ICC trophy. He was awarded the Player of the Match in the final, too.
'It is a privilege to receive this award. To contribute to an ICC World Test Championship win for our team and South Africa is something that means a lot to me," Markram said, as quoted by the ICC.
'Winning the final at Lord's is a historic moment for South African cricket, and it is something we will all remember forever. This victory was only possible due to the combined efforts of the entire team, with crucial contributions from KG (Kagiso Rabada) and Tembs (Proteas captain Temba Bavuma)," he added.
Markram overcame he disappointment of a duck in the first innings to anchor South Africa in the big chase of 282 runs. He put up a 147-run stand alongside Bavuma for the third wicket, which helped them recover from 70/2. He got out after a 207-ball marathon but had done enough to escort the Proteas to the brink of victory.
Meanwhile, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews took home the award in the women's category. It is her fourth such accolade. Her best performance came in the three-T20I series against South Africa, where here twin 60s helped the Windies overturn a 1-0 deficit. She also won the Player of the Series trophy for it.
'It's an honour to receive the Player of the Month award again. I've been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it's been great to contribute to the team's success — especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa," Matthews said about the ICC award in a statement.
'Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what's ahead. There's a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team. We're heading in the right direction, and I'm excited about where we can go from here."

No India-Pakistan At Olympics 2028? Only 1 Asian Team To Directly Qualify

Only one team from Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa will directly qualify for the 2028 Olympics. With USA taking the fifth sport, the remaining will have to play a qualifier. Cricket has taken a major step towards increasing its global appeal by securing a ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. However, only six teams will be able to make it to the final T20 matches to compete for the Gold, and that includes the host, the United States of America, leaving five other teams. According to a report in Forbes, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to use regional rankings to decide which teams will go ahead. This means only the top-ranked team in Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa will automatically qualify for the tournament. The final pace will be decided by a qualifier. Earlier, there were concerns about finding a window in cricket's already packed calendars for the qualifiers and other logistical doubts. However, as per the report, the ICC is happy with hosting one qualifying tournament. Separately, the West Indies, which comprises several small islands and is not a recognised country, are likely to hold their individual tournament to determine which country will play the qualifier. Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup will determine the women's Olympic spots and there's uncertainty over the USA's participation. Cricket's return to the Olympics after over a century will take place at the Fairgrounds Stadium in the city of Pomona, about 50km from Los Angeles, starting on July 12, with the medal matches scheduled for July 20 and 29, 2028. 'When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighbourhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy. We are already delivering that legacy as we announce there have been more than one million enrollments in PlayLA. I want to thank LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for making these programs possible and for their continued work to host the greatest Games yet," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in a recent statement. USA cricket given more time Meanwhile, the report added, USA Cricket is set to avoid suspension of its ICC membership. The world body is set to give it three months to address its governance issues. The ICC had earlier asked the board to resign en masse, but faced resistance. The board is under increased scrutiny in light of the Olympics. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. With Sports Bill On Cards, Will BCCI Wait And Allow Roger Binny To Continue Beyond 70?

The incumbent BCCI president Roger Binny turned 70 on Saturday but there is no immediate clarity on whether he would be continuing till the AGM in September or demit office with immediate effect with vice-president Rajeev Shukla taking charge as the interim head. To add another twist to the tale, a Draft National Sports Bill is in the pipeline, which will be tabled by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during the upcoming monsoon session of the parliament and it carries a provision of increasing the upper limit of an age cap to 75 from the existing 70 for an administrator. Even though the BCCI constitution which was drafted by Justice Lodha Committee has kept the age cap of 70 for cricket's parent body but once the Sports Bill comes into effect, the BCCI as a National Sports Federation (NSF) is expected to come under its ambit. While BCCI doesn't depend on government grants but with Indian cricket teams all set to be a part of the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, it is expected that the country's richest sporting body will adhere to the new Sports Bill. When PTI approached sources close to Binny, it was learnt that the septuagenarian is expected to get in touch with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and the legal department on the way ahead for him. So what does the Draft Sports Bill state about the Age Cap? As per Draft Bill which is in possession with PTI, on page No. 8 in Chapter II under National Sports Bodies sub clause (2) (e), the age-cap tenure rule is specified. "A person shall not be qualified to contest election or seek, nomination to, the executive committee, unless that person complies with International Charters and Statutes and Bye-Laws relating to age and term of the executive committee: "Provided that person shall not be more than 70 years of age on the last date of the nomination for election: "Provided further that any person aged between 70 and 75 years may contest elections or seek nominations if permitted by the international charters and statutes and the bye-laws and in such case, person elected shall serve full term." If one interprets the age-clause, then in theory, if someone aged 69 years and 364 days on the date of nomination, if elected for any office bearer's post can continue his full term beyond the age of 70 once the bill comes into effect. While Binny, on Saturday, completed 70 years, which is BCCI age-cap for any office bearer, the new Sports Bill, if it comes into effect by August can ensure that the 1983 World Cup hero back at the helm, and he can have at least another three year term if not five, obviously with a rider. Provided that the powerful people, who run the show at the BCCI decide that Binny can be continued for another three if not five years as per new bill, if the international body (ICC in this case) doesn't have any age-cap provision, then one can continue till 75 years. Till date, ICC charter doesn't have any age-cap rule in other sports bodies such as FIFA and IOC. So where does it leave Shukla? Till the Bill comes into effect, the Congress Rajya Sabha MP can continue to be the interim leader even if it is not explicitly put in letter and spirit. However in the BCCI itself, there are informal deliberations and discussions about whether to elevate Shukla for two months or quietly wait for the Sports Bill to come into effect. There is a school of thought in the BCCI circles that president's post should preferably be carried by some former India cricketer of repute just like Sourav Ganguly or Binny. Dhruv Jurel Set To Replace Rishabh Pant In Manchester? New Video Makes Big Reveal

Jurel has been India's second-choice keeper-batter ever since his Test debut last year against England at home. India are in Manchester, gearing up for the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, which begins July 23. The defeat at Lord's has put them in a precarious situation as they can't afford to lose any of the remaining Test matches. Moreover, the doubt looms over the participation of vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who has been nursing a finger injury. Pant injured his finger while keeping wickets in the first innings of the Lord's Test. He left the field and didn't put back the keeping gloves thereafter. Though he batted across innings and even got a fifty, Dhruv Jurel stepped in for him behind the stumps. Dhruv Jurel In Line The injury in the Lord's Test raised question marks over Pant's participation in the fourth Test. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Jurel worked intensively with fielding coach T Dilip. ESPN Cricinfo shared the video of the session, sparking further doubts over Pant's availability for the must-win game in Manchester later this week. However, if assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeshcate is to be believed, then Pant will be fit on time to don the keeping gloves again. Speaking to reporters in Manchester after India's first practice session on Thursday, Doeschate said that Pant will bat before the match, but the team management is being cautious with his finger injury. 'He will bat in Manchester before the Test. I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test, and it's only going to get easier on his finger," Ten Doeschate said. 'Keeping is the last part of the process. We need to make sure that he can keep—we don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through an inning," he added. Shastri Issues Warning Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has advised India against playing Rishabh Pant in the fourth Test if he can't keep wickets. 'I don't think he should go in as a specialist batter if he can't keep because he will have to field," Shastri said on the ICC review podcast. 'If he fields, that will be worse. With the gloves, at least there is some protection. Without gloves, if he gets something that stings in there, then it won't be very good. It'll only worsen the injury," he added.
