Maruti Suzuki's new 'Dzire' secures 5-star safety rating in India

(Corrects paragraph 3 to say Maruti will fit all its models with 6 airbags by the end of fiscal 2026, not April) (Reuters) -Maruti Suzuki secured a five-star safety rating for its popular 'Dzire' small car, India's transport minister said on Wednesday, marking a milestone for the country's largest carmaker that has for long lagged its rivals in safety. Its upgraded 'Dzire' model, launched in November, secured the highest rating of five stars under India's local safety standard, Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the first such Maruti model to hit the milestone. As part of its efforts to catch up to local rivals, Maruti has said it would fit all its cars with six airbags by the end of fiscal 2026, as Indian buyers seek safer options. Smaller rivals Tata Motors and Mahindra already have several Bharat NCAP five-star rated cars in their lineup. "It's heartening to witness mainstream models setting new benchmarks in vehicle safety," India's Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said in a post on X.

BHASHINI and CRIS to develop AI-driven multilingual solutions for Indian Railways

The Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for Indian Railways. The collaboration is set to enhance the way passengers interact with railway services by providing support in 22 Indian languages. The move is a step towards improving linguistic inclusivity and digital transformation in the Indian Railways. The MoU was signed by BHASHINI CEO Amitabh Nag and CRIS Managing Director G.V.L. Satya Kumar in the country's capital. The initiative will see the integration of BHASHINI's advanced language technology stack, including Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-to-Text Translation, Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), into CRIS-managed systems such as the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) and RailMadad. Nag said: 'This collaboration will transform how millions of passengers engage with railway services daily. Through BHASHINI's AI capabilities, we are ensuring that language is no longer a barrier to accessing vital public services.' The partnership's objectives extend to co-developing chatbots and voice assistants for multilingual passenger support, creating multilingual interfaces for railway enquiry setups, and scaling services through both cloud and on-premises infrastructure. These AI capabilities are planned to be deployed across various platforms, including websites, mobile apps, kiosks, and call centres, supporting real-time, speech-based interaction in multiple Indian languages. Joint technical workshops and pilot deployments are scheduled to begin in the coming months. Kumar said: 'CRIS is proud to partner with BHASHINI to implement inclusive, AI-powered solutions across our digital platforms. This will enhance accessibility, transparency, and efficiency in our passenger-facing services.' In a related development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the first of 1,200 Siemens Mobility D9-9000 HP electric locomotives, manufactured at the Indian Railways factory in Dahod, Gujarat. The D9 locomotive is touted as the "second most powerful" in Indian Railways, following the 12,000 horsepower WAG-12B. After Google, Meta loses public policy head in India

Meta's head of public policy in India, Shivnath Thukral, is leaving the social networking company, nearly three and a half years after joining, and just months after his counterpart at Google stepped down. Thukral spent over seven and a half years at Meta and took over as public policy lead for the South Asian market — the company's largest user base — in November 2022, after his predecessor Rajiv Aggarwal left. 'Having helped build some of the systems and processes, I do feel it is a good time to let the engine and the team work on their own. As my next journey begins, I want to recognize the work of my team, which is the best in business and one of the reasons why this is such a difficult decision for me,' Thukral said in a LinkedIn post on Wednesday. Thukral's exit comes just months after Meta won relief in India over WhatsApp's 2021 data-sharing policy, which had earlier resulted in a five-year ban by the country's antitrust regulator. The company had warned that the antitrust ruling could force the rollback of its features. Nonetheless, Meta, which has the biggest user base for Facebook and WhatsApp, and the largest market for its Meta AI usage in India, still faces regulatory challenges as the country moves toward enacting its anticipated data privacy rules that may require parental consent to serve children. Meta also faces criticism from Indian telcos, as WhatsApp has over 500 million users in the country, and a large segment of them uses the instant messaging service instead of traditional telecom services for communicating over text, voice, and video calls. Similarly, WhatsApp is often criticized for not restricting spam on its platform in India, although the app did bring changes that were touted to restrict unsolicited business communication. 'It is not an easy decision to make, but I feel very confident that our policy engagement with stakeholders is at a credible and constructive juncture, and we can only build further on that. There is always more to do, and I know the team is well equipped to navigate the waters well,' Thukral wrote. Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that the company has not appointed Thukral's replacement. In February, Google's policy head, Sreenivasa Reddy, quit. Reddy had replaced former Indian antitrust official Archana Gulati, who resigned in 2022 just five months after joining. Google has not yet appointed a replacement for Reddy, and his exit occurred amid the search giant's antitrust cases in the country, some of which are yet to be settled. 'Shivnath Thukral is leaving Meta to pursue new opportunities,' said Kevin Martin, Meta VP and head of global policy, in a prepared statement. 'As a member of the India leadership team, he played a key role in navigating and shaping policy and regulatory conversations and engagements that were critical for the industry and Meta in India over the last 7.5 years. We thank him for his leadership and contributions, and wish him well in his future endeavors,' he added.
