ITV and Hera Pictures have today released first look images from I Fought The Law, a brand-new drama starring BAFTA winning actor Sheridan Smith.
Sheridan portrays Ann Ming in the heart breaking and inspiring real-life story of a mother who, driven by unimaginable grief, finds strength to challenge the centuries-old Double Jeopardy Law to see her daughter's murderer finally brought to justice after a 15-year battle.
Produced by Hera Pictures (What It Feels Like For A Girl, Mary & George, Hamnet, Temple, Honour) the four-part series is written by Jamie Crichton (All Creatures Great and Small, The Last Kingdom, Grantchester) and is based on Ann Ming's book 'For The Love of Julie'. The series will launch the autumn season for ITV and STV and will be available to stream on ITVX and STV Player.
The drama follows the tragic, moving, and deeply inspiring journey of the Ming family after the murder of their beloved 22-year-old daughter, Julie. In the wake of multiple police failings, Ann relentlessly pressures the authorities to uncover the truth and ensure the man responsible is brought to justice - despite initially seeming he will get away with murder.
Driven by love, grief, and extraordinary determination, Ann and her family campaign tirelessly in Julie's name. In her steadfast and indomitable style, Ann takes on the entire justice system - challenging the Crown Prosecution Service, the Law Commission, prominent defence barristers in television debates, the Government, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General, and two Home Secretaries - as she bravely 'fought the law.'
As a consultant throughout the production process, Ann Ming commented on the television adaptation: 'I am very pleased that ITV and Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the Double Jeopardy Law. My daughter's killer was wrongfully acquitted, and I wasn't going to let this law stand in my way of getting justice for Julie. I'm overwhelmed that Sheridan Smith will be playing me. Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful.'
On her role, playing Ann, Sheridan Smith commented: 'I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the Double Jeopardy Law to be changed. She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.'
Commissioned by ITV's Director of Drama Polly Hill, I Fought The Law also features Daniel York Loh (Scarborough) as Ann's husband, Charlie Ming, and Enzo Cilenti (The Crown) as DS Mark Braithwaite.
The series also features Marlowe Chan-Reeves (Doctor Who), Olivia Ng (Phoenix Rise), Jake Davies (Grace), Victoria Wyant, Kent Riley (Mr Bates vs. The Post Office), Jack James Ryan (Passenger, Vera), Andrew Lancel (Unforgotten) and Rufus Jones (Hijack).
Hera Pictures produced the series in association with All3Media International. The Executive Producers for Hera Pictures are Liza Marshall and Charlotte Webber. The series is directed by Erik Richter Strand (The Crown) and produced by Mark Hedges (Time).
I Fought The Law will air on ITV and STV and be available to stream on ITVX and STV Player this autumn, followed by I Fought The Law: The Ann Ming Story documentary.
Produced by MultiStory Media the documentary, which is narrated by Sheridan Smith, takes a detailed look at the case from Julie's disappearance in 1989 until the murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006, becoming the first person convicted under the changed law.
Featuring exclusive interviews with Ann, her family and friends, retired police officers, and other key individuals close to the story, the documentary will also include rare archive and images that tell the story of one mother's unwavering resolve to get justice for her daughter.
The documentary shows Ann's extraordinary campaign, her unshakable determination, and how her fight for justice has since helped secure other landmark convictions, including those of Stephen Lawrence's killers.

ITV The Fortune Hotel's Stephen Mangan hits back at comparisons to The Traitors
ITV's hit series The Fortune Hotel returns for a second series tonight - and host Stephen Mangan has addressed some fans' claims that the show is similar to BBC One's The Traitors ITV's gameshow The Fortune Hotel is back tonight, with a new cast of contestants hoping to take home a suitcase carrying £250,000 from the Caribbean resort. Hosted by actor Stephen Mangan, the new series is set to kick off with a major twist - as one couple is kicked off the show before they even make it to the hotel. Since premiering last year, the show has faced some comparisons to BBC One hit The Traitors - however, Stephen has insisted that the two series are very different. "I don't mind at all - The Traitors is a great show and there's plenty of room for more than one show," he told The Mirror in an exclusive chat. "I think it's clearly very different. We have those really tense sessions at the end but there's also a lot of fun in our show. It's really fun to watch. People are hilarious in it. "But I'm flattered by those comparisons. The proof of the pudding is always in whether people watch it and a lot of people watched out first series so that's the best thing really." Stephen Mangan spent a month in the Caribbean to film ITV 's The Fortune Hotel, but it wasn't all plain sailing - with the TV presenter admitting that it was 'tough' being away from his family for that long. The 57-year-old, who shares two sons with wife Louise Delamere, said: 'It was during term time so my family couldn't join hard phoning home when your wife's doing the school run in the rain in November and you're complaining about it being too hot on the beach. It doesn't go down very well.' As tensions rise and couples squabble, Stephen reveals that he struggles to watch the contestants bicker on the beach - which they do several times in the series. 'I don't like people falling out in front of me,' he says. 'I know some people go through life creating that drama but I'm not one of those people.' With the show now under his belt, Stephen admits that he now has no excuse not to do I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here. 'I would like to say that I wouldn't want to go away from my family for that long to the jungle but clearly I'm doing it,' he says. While he's not too keen for the jungle, Stephen wants to bring back classic Channel 4 sitcom Green Wing after two decades. 'That would be fun to see them 20 years later,' he says. 'Comedy will always be my first love and I'll always come back to it.' The Fortune Hotel airs tonight at 9pm on ITV1.

Coronation Street legend in tears as wedding day 'ruined' ahead of soap exit
Coronation Street legend Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) broke down in tears after his wedding to Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) took a dramatic turn on the latest episode of the ITV soap Dev Alahan was left in tears after his wedding day went awry on Wednesday night's episode of Coronation Street. The Weatherfield businessman was set to tie the knot with Bernie Winter on the latest instalment of the ITV soap. But things didn't exactly go to plan when the bride-to-be was late and then collapsed on the spot as they were about to say their vows, and that was just the beginning of their troubles. It was set to be a flamboyant day full of bright colours and costumes at the Street's token restaurant, but ambulance had to be called when Bernie struggled to breathe and she was quickly whisked off to hospital. It soon transpired that Bernie had had an allergic reaction to the lilies that were in her wedding bouquet, and had been supplied by Preston's Petals. It comes after bosses confirmed that a Coronation Street legend will be returning to the cobbles after seven years away. While all this was going on, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) took it upon herself to entertain the congregation with a rendition of the Grease classic Hopelessly Devoted To You, and she then proposed to boyfriend Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan). Meanwhile, Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) eventually became the second Mrs Alahan when she and Dev said their vows as she sat in the hospital bed and she was discharged later that day. As viewers will know, Dev, who was previously married to the late Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati), had been kept in the dark about the fact that his son Aadi (Adam Hussain) has ran up £6,000 worth of debt in the shop, which he was left in charge of when his dad took a break a few months ago. But Dev managed to get it out of his son later in the episode. Furious, Dev, who has been played by Jimmi Harkishin since 1999, told him: "You are pathetic. Why did you keep all that from me? All those debts. I purposely kept my eyes and hands of the books so that you could prove yourself. And now, you are the definition of a failure. Shame on you! And you've brought shame on me." However, Bernie was aware of just how much her long-lost grandson Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) had been involved in the situation having staged a robbery as a failed insurance scam, and she had spent weeks trying to cover things up. Earlier in the day, Brody and Aadi had a violent confrontation after it became apparent that he had held her up in getting to the venue on time as he asked her for advice on how to take care of his sisters now that both of his parents are in prison. After Bernie overheard the confrontation between Dev and Aadi, she explained to Dev: "Two words. Insurance scam. Aadi got Brody to stage a robbery, and when that went belly-up, I tried to help. I got you to bring the wedding forward so we could get our hands on Aunti Rani's cash. I thought we could pay off the debt that way. " As viewers will know, Aunty Rani (Josephine Lloyd-Welcome) was due to present Dev and Bernie with thousands for the wedding, and Bernie had hoped to use most of the money to pay off Aadi's debts whilst keeping it all from her significant other. Deciding that now was the time to tell the truth, she told Dev: "I did the wedding on the cheap so there'd be a bit left over, otherwise, you'd be head-to-toe in Saville Row." In disbelief, Dev simply shook his head and muttered "No, no..." as he walked straight out of number seven. He headed over to the now-empty Bistro, where Bernie followed soon after. She told him: "I thought I could fix everything without you knowing, keep everything sweet between father and son. I've ruined our wedding, haven't I?" Dev was on the verge of tears as he put his head in his hands, and he begged his now-wife that the lies had to stop. She promised this would be the case, and the pair finally got to have their first dance together as husband and wife. But just moments later, Brody confronted Aadi on the Street and warned him: "Don't ever get in my face like that again because I won't be held responsible for my actions. I know we're like relatives now but stay as far away from me as possible. Laters." Fans will know that Aadi is set to leave the soap, but no exit date has been announced as yet. Could he face prison, or might he be kicked out by his relatives? Viewers certainly think so and that somehow it's all linked. They have wondered if a sad exit is on the cards as he burns bridges with those on the cobbles. One fan posted online: "Aadi is out of his depth with this robbery and love life. Everything is getting on top of him," as another predicted: "I wonder if this will be when Aadi exits the show?"

Amid his plans for teenagers Dylan Penders and April Windsor, fans think Ray will end up with someone in the village. The love interest could be none other than a character linked to April and others in the Dales, and it could spark an ultimatum if it was to happen. Fans can't help but question whether Ray will be caught up in a romance, taking his dealing storyline into another direction. It comes as Ray made it clear who he was targeting this week, with a drug drop planned for one terrified teen. So if the female in question dopes embark on a romance with the villain, it would definitely divide villagers. Fans think that unlucky in love Laurel Thomas will be Ray's love interest. She's not had the best of luck recently, from a near-kiss with ex Marlon Dingle, as well as her brief fling with vicar Charles Anderson, eight years on from the death of her husband Ashley Thomas. Laurel seems to be single for now, and with her offscreen a fair bit recently fans are guessing she has a storyline on the way. Amid fears about who else Ray may target, and whether Laurel's teen son Arthur Thomas will get involved, fans are speculating Laurel and Ray will end up together. Taking to social media, one fan said: "Joe [Absolom] said Ray has charm so I'm sure he's gonna end up with someone and Laurel is at the top of my list." Another fan replied: "I'm rooting for her and Ray now." So will Laurel end up in a forbidden romance with the village villain who's targeting teens in a dark plot? It's not yet clear how long Ray is on the show for and what will happen with the storyline. It comes as he was heard telling a mystery person about April "being of use" for their dodgy dealings. It wasn't revealed who he was on the phone to, but fans think they know the identity of the caller. Some fans have gone back to the Joe Tate theory about a possible teaming up, believing they are working together. Another theory speculated that fellow newcomer Celia might be linked to Ray. One theory said: "Anyone else curious as to who Ray was on the phone with? I reckon it's someone we know like Joe." Another post echoed this theory saying: "Is Ray working with Joe?"
