Greg Cannom, Oscar-winning Makeup Innovator Who Turned Brad Pitt Into Benjamin Button, Dies at 73

Yahoo20-05-2025
Greg Cannom, a five-time Oscar-winning makeup and prosthetics artist celebrated for the incredible transformations of Robin Williams in 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993) and Brad Pitt in 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), died on May 3 at the age of 73.
Cannom's death was announced by his former mentor and longtime collaborator Rick Baker. The two famously worked together on several projects, including Michael Jackson's 1982 'Thriller' music video and the 1977 science-fiction film 'The Incredible Melting Man.'

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 706 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild also announced Cannom's passing in a poignant message on Facebook on Thursday.
A GoFundMe page launched for expenses said he experienced health challenges for two years, including 'severe shingles, a staph infection, sepsis and heart failure.'
Born in Los Angeles, Cannom was mystified by the world of motion pictures from a young age, finding a particular interest in horror films. He even called himself a 'monster geek.'
It wasn't until he attended Cypress College in Orange County when he began his training in stage makeup, learning the ins and outs while working on around 200 plays. By age 25, Cannom had landed a job as Baker's assistant, the artist best known for his work in 'Star Wars.' Their first project together was the 1978 'It's Alive sequel, It Lives Again,' creating baby monster prosthetics.
Cannom and Baker later brought to life many legendary characters, including Jim Carrey's green alter-ego in 'The Mask' (1994) and Gloria Stuart's 101-year-old persona in 'Titanic' (1997).
Indeed, turning Stuart into a 101-year-old lady in 'Titanic' was nothing like the aghast characters he'd constructed before. Yet, it was projects like this that helped solidify his reputation as an irrevocable makeup architect that could not only produce the inconceivable, but master realistic visions, too.
Cannom also transformed brother duo Marlon and Shawn Wayans into white female twins with blond hair in 2004's 'White Chicks' and reconstructed Danny DeVito's hands to look like penguin feet in 1992's 'Batman Returns.'
For more complicated jobs, Cannom would enlist up to 20 assistants to help him handle intricate facial molds. He advised on every detail and every facial expression, pointing out tiny changes that build an entirely new visage.
Cannom later landed a job on the film 'Vice,' as a character makeup designer — the project that secured him his final Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in 2019.
WWD has contacted the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild and Baker for comments.

Kirsten Dunst reveals son James suffered 'serious health scare' while shooting new film

Kirsten Dunst's next turn on the big screen may earn big laughs, but there was some harrowing drama off-screen. The Oscar-nominated actress, who shares two children with husband and fellow actor Jesse Plemons, revealed that her son James suffered a medical emergency while shooting her upcoming film, "The Entertainment System Is Down." The dark comedy, written and directed by Ruben Östlund, was shot in Budapest and stars Dunst, 43, alongside Keanu Reeves and Tobias Menzies. In an Aug. 20 interview with Town & Country Magazine, Dunst shared that the medical ordeal took place while Plemons, 37, and their children were staying with her in the Hungarian capital. Although Dunst and Plemons had rented a home, with plans of remaining for the film's production, things changed course when James, 4, had a "serious health scare." While the actress didn't go into details on James' medical ordeal, Dunst confirmed that "everyone is fine now." After the incident, Plemons took James and their other son, 7-year-old Ennis, back to Los Angeles while Dunst remained in Budapest. Kirsten Dunst gets nostalgic: 'Bring It On' star recites cheer in surprise appearance at movie screening Dunst, who returned home in April for a brief visit, said she experienced some parental anxiety after the health scare, likening her fear to the horror film "'Final Destination,' where you're imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst-case scenarios happening to your child." "I have never seen that movie, but I know the concept," Dunst added. "That's how it feels to be a mother at times." Dunst and Plemons welcomed their first child, son Ennis, in May 2018, followed by James in May 2021. The couple married in July 2022. Kirsten Dunst interview: 'Civil War' actress talks rehearsing with her 5-year-old Dunst told Town & Country Magazine that James' health scare "brought us together as a family in such a deeper way." The actress added that she and Plemons will soon be heading to The Bahamas for a family vacation. Why the tropical getaway? Dunst said James' request was simple: "I want to go to a beach where my sandcastle won't wash away."

Outside Lands' biggest performer just canceled three festival appearances

Fans who caught Doechii 's electrifying Outside Lands performance in San Francisco earlier this month lucked out, because the rapper will not be hitting the stage again any time soon. The Grammy-winning singer abruptly canceled three European appearances on Monday, Aug. 18. She was scheduled to perform at France's Rock en Seine on Thursday, Aug. 21; All Points East in London on Saturday, Aug. 23; and Bristol's Forwards Festival on Sunday, Aug. 24. While each festival issued its own statement on social media, none of them provided a reason for the Florida native's absence. The 'Anxiety' hitmaker herself has not yet made any comments about the cancellations. Doechii's only other appearance since wowing festivalgoers at Outside Lands was at Pukkelpop in Belgium on Sunday, Aug. 17. Doechii's School of Hip-Hop spectacle at Golden Gate Park show drew tens of thousands of fans — a noticeably larger crowd than Doja Cat, whose headlining set followed on the first day of the festival. The highly-choreographed production featured songs from her 2024 EP 'Alligator Bites Never Heal' in addition to a handful of singles such as 'Alter Ego.' While many of her European fans won't get to see her live this summer, the Bay Area will have one more opportunity to witness the hip-hop artist in action this fall. She is scheduled to bring her Live From the Swamp Tour to San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Nov. 7. All 12 scheduled shows on her tour are sold out.
