Daytona 500 live updates: 2025 NASCAR Cup Series opener delayed by rain after just 11 laps

Yahoo16-02-2025
It's been 14 weeks since Joey Logano won his third NASCAR Cup Series championship in Phoenix and now it's finally time to start the 2025 campaign with the Daytona 500.
We've covered driver movement, previewed the season as a whole and kept track of a pretty significant lawsuit in the offseason, but now let's focus on the 'Super Bowl of motor racing events.'

One interesting aspect of the #DAYTONA500 today is that rain is expected around 3:30pm. Is that enough time to get to the end of Stage 2? Also how does that affect the fuel saving game that now dominates super speedway racing? @NASCARonNBC

But let's just hope the rain misses the speedway entirely.

The biggest race on the NASCAR calendar also features a unique qualifying format not used on any other race weekend. On Wednesday night all entered cars will turn one lap at top speed, the order of which is determined by a Tuesday night draw of numbers. The top 10 drivers then go into a shootout with the top two times from that session setting the front row for Sunday's race.
The remaining cars are dropped — as evenly as possible, along with the top two qualifiers — into two 60-lap qualifying "duels" to be run Thursday night that set the field from spots three through 40. The finishing order for the first duel determines the inside row slots and the finishing order from the second duel sets the outside.
Restrictor plate racing presents a randomizing element that makes handicapping the results challenging, and that's reflected in BetMGM's odds. Three drivers enter the week with identical 12-to-1 odds and 10 drivers come in at 20-to-1 or better.

Due to a new rule this year, a provisional is granted for a 'world-class driver' who does not run the Cup series full time to join the field for any event as the 41st car. Teams must put in the request at least 90 days ahead of time and only Trackhouse Racing did so on behalf of four-time Indianapolis 500 champion Hélio Castroneves. Castroneves will still attempt to qualify for the race and if he posts one of the top 40 times, there will be only 40 cars running on Sunday. If he doesn't make it on time, the Daytona 500 will have its largest field in 10 years.
Seven-time series champion and winner of the 2006 and 2013 Daytona 500s Jimmie Johnson will attempt to make the field in a third entry for the Legacy Motor Club team that he owns. Johnson, 49, has run in the event twice since retiring from full-time racing in 2020, with a best finish of 28th.

Eagles' A.J. Brown lands ahead of CeeDee Lamb on the NFL's Top 100 players list for 2025

A.J. Brown is one of the best players in the NFL, and a top thirty selection in this year's Top 100 players list. The Eagles' All-Pro landed at No. 29 on the list, ahead of NFC East rival and Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb, who was No. 35. Brown didn't rest on his laurels after winning Super Bowl 59. He chose to get right back into the gym and take his skills to another level as the Birds look to repeat as Champions. Brown is a motivational speaker and a team captain. He recently traveled to the most "dangerous gym in America" to test his mind, body, and spirit. Brown is taking things to another level. Despite missing three games due to injury last season, Brown led the team with 1,079 receiving yards. He also ranked 1st in receiving average (16.1) (min. 60 catches) and 3rd in receiving yards per game (83.0) (min. 13 games), behind Ja'Marr Chase (100.5) and Justin Jefferson (90.2). Smith posted a career-high 8 TDs in the regular season and hauled in a 46-yard TD in Super Bowl LIX. During the run to the Super Bowl, he became the franchise's all-time leader in postseason receiving yards (595). This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: A.J. AJ Brown injury update: Status, latest news on Eagles WR's hamstring

The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with an injury to one of their key playmakers ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Wide receiver A.J. Brown has been absent from practice while dealing with a hamstring injury. The Eagles have been mum about his status and how much the soft-tissue injury could affect him in the weeks leading up to the team's Sept. 4 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Here are the latest updates on Brown as his injury lingers into preseason Week 3. A.J. Brown injury update Brown is not participating in the Eagles' Monday, Aug. 18 practice because of his hamstring injury. However, Brown's absence appears to be precautionary. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Eagles are keeping the veteran receiver sidelined at they "take their time to make sure he doesn't suffer any setbacks." And while Brown wasn't dressed for practice or working out with the receivers, he did take some time to throw to his fellow wide-outs during Monday's session. That's A.J. Brown throwing passes to the WRs. #Eagles It isn't clear exactly how long the Eagles will keep Brown from practicing. Coach Nick Sirianni was focused on getting the veteran receiver ready for Week 1 when asked about his status after practice on Thursday, Aug. 14. "Our goal is to get all these guys ready to be firing on all cylinders once the season hits," Sirianni told reporters. "Not gonna get into too much of that stuff. He's working through some things, and he'll be back out there when he can." While Sirianni's comments raised some alarm among Eagles fans, Garafolo reported he didn't "sense any great concern" about the long-term availability of the three-time All-Pro second-teamer. "I just sense that it's a guy that they want to make sure that they have right heading into the season," Garafolo said of Brown in an Aug. 14 appearance on NFL Network. "He's got three weeks to get right. I saw him when I was at the practice. He was moving around on the sideline and certainly engaged. So, A.J. Brown back to work at some point in the near future it feels like is the hope for the Eagles at this point." A.J. Brown stats 2024 Brown led the Eagles in receiving yards during the 2024 NFL season. He posted his third consecutive 1,000-yard season, and fifth in six NFL campaigns, while finishing just behind DeVonta Smith in total catches and touchdowns. Below is a look at Brown's stats from 2024: Brown also added 12 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns during the postseason en route to winning his first Super Bowl ring. Eagles WR depth chart Brown is the top receiver on Philadelphia's depth chart. Below is a look at how the Eagles' top six receivers currently align, according to the Eagles' official website. * Denotes starter. The Eagles just traded for 25-year-old Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III, so it isn't clear where he will fit into the team's pecking order. It also isn't clear whether Brown's hamstring injury inspired Philadelphia to add more pass-catching depth or if the team simply wanted more competition for Dotson, Wilson, Smith and Marshall. Either way, Brown will remain perched atop the Eagles' depth chart as long as he remains healthy enough to play.

Vic Fangio's most important quality isn't getting mentioned enough

One of Vic Fangio's most endearing qualities is one that isn't getting mentioned enough. We were told to move on weeks ago. Still, occasionally, we ponder what we witnessed from the Philadelphia Eagles in February. Total domination of the Kansas City Chiefs- That's perhaps the best way to describe it. You've probably heard that once or twice or described it as such. One of the heroes played zero snaps. In his first run as defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio devised a plan to befuddle the defending champs. Zero blitzes... Six sacks... Zero points scored by Kansas City until the game was finally decided and out of reach. Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes had zero answers. That night will be talked about in Eagles lore forever, but it wouldn't have happened if Fangio failed at perhaps the most critical part of coaching. Vic Fangio's most endearing coaching quality Philadelphia refuses to label itself as the defending Super Bowl champions. We all understand why, but that's precisely what they are. Since he accepted the role of defensive coordinator, Fangio has been quite a pleasant surprise. He's funnier than we assumed he'd be. He answers every question asked of him in greater detail than expected. Truth be told, we didn't see that coming from one of the game's wise men, especially one who is so old-school in his approach. At first glance, you wonder if Coach Fangio would struggle in finding ways to connect with a roster full of young talent. As it turns out, that might be his most surprising, satisfying, and needed quality. One of the more intriguing portions of the Vic Fangio Eagles story is the winding road that led him to the defensive coordinator chair. He served as a consultant to the Eagles organization in 2022. Jonathan Gannon had moved on. Philadelphia probably would have hired Fangio then (2023), but he had already taken a job with the Miami Dolphins. How do we say this and do so politely? Miami wasn't fond of Fangio's old-school approach. They ran him out of town, and Philadelphia landed the guy they wanted, albeit one year later. The Birds were coming off a nightmare finish to what began as a promising season. The 2023 campaign will be forever remembered for a collapse and the decision by players to ignore their defensive coordinator. Sean Desai was unable to connect with players and thus alienated them. Philadelphia allowed Matt Patricia to assume playcalling duties, and things immediately spiraled from bad to worse. Though it's hard to believe this now, there were whispers about the Fangio hire. How was he going to connect with players in Philadelphia when he had failed to do so after taking his talents to South Beach? Who knows what he said, but thank goodness he said it. Coach got his players to buy in, and Philadelphia is better for that. Many of the crucial cogs in Fangio's defense are still playing under the terms of their rookie contracts, so if the math is correct, we're discussing an age gap of four decades or more in certain instances. Those years can sometimes feel like 'dog years', but Philadelphia makes it work. Credit a mature locker room with youngsters who are mature beyond their years. Nolan Smith even joked that learning from Coach Fangio was a smooth transition after learning from another old-school thinker. Kirby Smart was his head coach in college while with the Georgia Bulldogs. It's from these wise old men that Smith has developed a larger appreciation for the hard work it takes to be great. So, yes, Fangio can shut down a high-powered Chiefs offense. He has probably forgotten more about the game than great coaches will ever know or remember, but coaching acumen means little if your layers don't buy in and back you. Ask Sean Desai. Ask Matt Patricia.
