Following the incident, there was confusion over which police station had taken Deshmukh in for questioning or treatment following which Pawar and Awhad started looking for him.
A video circulated on social media shows Pawar visibly angry, confronting a police officer at Azad Maidan station. In the clip, he is heard saying:
"
Don't raise your voice.
If you're not able to speak, don't speak."
Pawar later told reporters at Vidhan Bhavan that a police officer had raised his voice and failed to provide clear information, which led to the argument. 'We only came to ask about our colleague. Instead of helping us, the police were vague and evasive,' he alleged.
An official said the leaders later met Deshmukh at JJ Hospital. He is believed to have suffered injuries during the alleged assault.

In a strongly worded statement, Rohit Pawar accused the police of acting on political instructions.
'After goons attacked our party worker Nitin Deshmukh in the Legislative Assembly, instead of arresting the goons—who are accused under MCOCA—Nitin Deshmukh himself was arrested. Due to the assault on the spot where he had surgery two months ago, we demanded to meet him to inquire about his condition, but the police made us run around to four or five different police stations for 3 to 4 hours, giving evasive answers and even treating Awhad Saheb disrespectfully with gestures,' he said.
'If the police administration is going to act according to the law, we will cooperate. But what if some police act on political orders? Whom should we seek justice from? If police acting on political orders do not even respect elected representatives, what must be the plight of the common people? There are countless incidents—like that of the elderly woman whose land was grabbed, Gyaneshwari Munde, the Deshmukh family, the Suryavanshi family—where the accusations are against those in power.
Should they expect justice or not?", he added further.

India is going to take control of this island due to..., it is located in...(Representational Image) The Lakshadweep administration is considering the acquisition of Bitra, one of the 10 inhabited islands in the archipelago, for defence purposes. The move invited a strong protest from Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed, who extended complete support to the local residents of the island and promised them to explore political and legal avenues to resist it. At present, there are 105 families on the island. And several have opposed the move. A recent government notification outlined this proposal for the Department of Revenue to take over the entire land area of Bitra Island, reported news agency PTI. The intent is to transfer it to relevant defense and strategic agencies of the Centre. What is the reason behind acquiring Bitra Island? The notification, issued last week, clarified that the initiative is driven by the strategic location of the island, its national security relevance, and the inherent logistical and administrative challenges posed by the civilian habitation. According to the news agency PTI report, the territorial administration would take over the island as per the relevant provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resetlement Act, 2013 for which Social Impact Assessment study has to be undertaken for the affected area. District Collector Shivam Chandra, in the order, said all stakeholders, including grama sabhas, would be consulted as part of the Social Impact Assessment initiatives. The survey of the proposed area under the acquisition would be completed within two months from the date of the publication of the notification on July 11, it stated. Why are some locals opposing the government's decision? On the other hand, Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed has stood up firm against the move to take over Bitra island by the UT administration. He stated that the real objective behind the move is to displace the indigenous population. In a statement issued by his office, the MP said Bitra is the smallest inhabited island in the UT and he would strongly protest against the administration's attempt to acquire it under the pretext of defense requirements. He also demanded that the decision be withdrawn immediately. Sayeed pointed out that the land required for defense purposes has already been acquired by the government in several islands. He stated that targeting Bitra, which has had a permanent population for decades, without considering any of these alternatives, is completely unacceptable. Why is Bitra Island strategically important for defence? Furthermore, he criticised the administration for initiating such actions without any consultation with the indigenous residents, especially at a time when there are no functioning of local panchayat in the islands. He stated that this kind of unilateral action undermines the democratic system and violates the constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens. In a statement, the MP assured that he would stand with the people of Bitra and would explore all political and legal avenues to resist the move. In addition, he also stated that he would raise the issue in the upcoming Parliament session, urging the central government to intervene immediately. Hamdullah Sayeed, MP for Lakshadweep, in a video message has given assurances to the people of Bitra not to panic or feel anxious about the notification. 'As your MP, we held a conference that included leaders from Bitra and Lakshadweep and discussed it in detail. We have decided to fight with the people of Bitra, politically and legally,' Hamdullah Sayeed stated, as reported by The Times of India.

‘Animals with no regard for life': 8 Indian-origin men held in US for kidnapping, torture, extortion; FBI links gang to murders in India

Authorities in California and the FBI are investigating eight Indian-origin suspects arrested in San Joaquin County for allegedly kidnapping and torturing a man as part of an international extortion scheme. The gang, led by Pavittar Singh, wanted in India for multiple murders, targeted Indian-Americans. JALANDHAR: Investigating the eight Indian-origin suspects arrested in San Joaquin County, California, on July 11, county authorities and FBI said the international Punjabi street gang kidnapped a local man, stripped him naked, and tortured him for hours as part of a brutal extortion racket that stretches from California'to murder plots in India. The authorities have urged Indian-Americas to report such extortion threats. Addressing a joint press conference, they revealed the gang leader, Pavittar Singh, was also wanted in India for multiple murders and firearms offences, including a killing in Batala, Punjab. FBI also cited earlier US arrests of Indian gang leaders: Gurdev 'Jassal' Singh (RPG attacks), Harpreet Singh, also known as Happy Passia, Lawrence Bishnoi's brother Anmol , linked to the murder of singer Sidhu Moose Wala, and others. 8 Indian-origin suspects face life in jail without bail Eight suspects, led by Pavittar, now face charges of kidnapping for ransom, torture and illegal weapons that carry life sentences. A multi-agency SWAT sweep on July 11 had netted machine guns, an assault rifle, and $15,000 cash stashed in a ceiling vent. Sheriff Patrick Withrow said they were tipped off on June 21 about a horrendous crime that occurred on June 19 in the Manteca area. They contacted the victim and, on July 11, their AGNET Unit — alongside SWAT teams from FBI, Stockton police, Manteca police and Stanislaus County sheriff's office — executed five coordinated search warrants across the county and arrested the suspects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Withrow said the purpose of the torture was to extract names of other potential extortion targets in the Indian-American business community. Elaborating on the federal and international angle, Sid Patel from FBISacramento field office said Pavittar was wanted in India for firearm violations, assault and multiple murders abroad. He revealed six of the eight suspects were picked up by ICE ERO for immigration proceedings, and FBI was coordinating with India and Canada on extradition after US sentences. San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas told the press conference that they filed two complaints charging the eight men with serious gang-related crimes, including kidnapping, torture, extortion, witness intimidation, and multiple weapon violations. They said the suspects faced life in prison, with no bail and no exceptions. Apart from Pavitar, other members of the gang included Dilpreet Singh, Sarbjit Singh, Gurtaj Singh, Amritpall Singh, Vishal Singh, Arshpreet Singh, and Manpreet Randhawa. According to the sheriff and FBI, the gang operations included extortion of Indian-American business owners, forced free labour, violent truck cargo hijackings along Central Valley, weapons and drug trafficking, and international political violence (RPG attacks, assassinations, grenade assaults on police stations in India). Each of the accused faces a life-in-prison baseline for kidnapping for ransom, along with firearm and gang enhancements that could push to life without parole. The sheriff even said, "Suspects are animals with little or no regard for human life." Announcing the setting up of an anonymous tip line specifically for this case, the sheriff urged Indian-American residents to report extortion and intimidation attempts. "Help us hunt the rest of this gang — call us."
