BIS raids Flipkart, E-Kart, Meesho, Amazon warehouses
The enforcement drive was part of the ongoing nationwide initiate to curb the sale and distribution of non-certified and unsafe products.
BIS teams seized about 25 categories of consumer products, including LED bulbs, toys, electronic material and table fans, which lack mandatory BIS certification or the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) mark, thereby violating Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, said BIS Vijayawada director and head Prem Sajani Patnala, on Tuesday.
'Based on specific intelligence and digital surveillance, it has been found that several e-commerce platforms are facilitating the sale and distribution of uncertified and potentially hazardous products. The seized products are being sold in contravention of mandatory QCOs,' Ms. Prem Sajani said.
BIS Vijayawada deputy director V.V. Reddy said that there are over 800 products under BIS mandatory certification. All the products must possess ISI, CRS or Hallmark.
'Any manufacture, storage or sale of goods without BIS approval is punishable under law. Use of BIS Care App, available on Google Play Store and Apple Store. Public are requested to report misuse of BIS marks on the App,' the Director said.
'BIS will continue the enforcement and consumer outreach efforts to ensure only safe and certified goods reach the market,' Mr. V.V. Reddy said.

Plea in SC seeks 'right to know' on product quality, seller details
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to declare that consumers have a "right to know" about the quality, purity and certification of products, besides details of distributors and sellers for redressal against unfair restrictive trade practices. It has also sought directions to the Centre and the states to ensure that every distributor, trader and shop owner displays details of registration, including name, address, phone number and number of employees at the entry gate in bold letters on a display board visible to people. The plea is slated to come up for hearing on July 21 before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. The petition filed by petitioner Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay said "right to know" was crucial for consumers to make informed choices and to protect themselves from unfair or restrictive trade practices and unscrupulous exploitation. "Right to know helps consumers avoid falling prey to a fraudulent or deceptive distributor, dealer, trader, seller and shop owner, who might misrepresent a product/service or disappear after sale, purchase and money transaction," said the plea, filed through advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey. It said that if a consumer has an issue with a product or service, knowing details about the distributor, dealer, and seller is essential for filing a complaint and seeking redressal through consumer redressal forums. "When a distributor, dealer, trader, seller and shop owner are transparent about their details, it fosters a fair and competitive market where consumers can make informed choices," the plea said. It said in essence, the right to know empowers consumers to be informed or protected and to make choices when engaging in sales, purchases and money transactions. The plea has sought to direct and declare that "every consumer has 'right to know' not only about quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard, manufacturing date, expiry date and BIS/FSSAI certification of good/products, but also about the details of the distributor/dealer/ trader/seller and shop owner, so as to seek redressal against unfair restrictive trade practices and unscrupulous exploitation in spirit of sections 2(6), 2(9), 2(10) and 2(11) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019".

Chhattisgarh police book Flipkart after knife used in Raipur murder was ordered online
Representative photo RAIPUR: In a chilling case that has raised serious questions over unchecked e-commerce deliveries, Chhattisgarh Police have registered an FIR against e-commerce giant Flipkart after a knife allegedly ordered through the platform was used in a violent theft attempt leading to murder at a petrol pump in Raipur. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 17, around 3 AM, at Umariya village under Mandir Hasaud police station limits. Chhattisgarh Police have booked six persons linked to e-commerce platform Flipkart and its delivery partner Elastic Run Courier for allegedly facilitating the online sale and delivery of a deadly weapon used in the crime. The case has triggered sharp concern over the online availability of potentially lethal items. Additional SP Vivek Shukla told TOI, 'Two youths, Sameer Tandon (21) and Kunal Tiwari (24), were arrested within hours of the incident in which a petrol pump employee, Yogesh Miri (26), was stabbed to death and another, Anil Gaikwad (22), was injured during a robbery attempt around 3 AM on July 17. Police said the murder weapon—a sharp-edged knife—was ordered online via Flipkart and delivered by Elastic Run Courier. The accused had even placed orders for two more knives, which were en route at the time of their arrest.' During the course of investigation, police examined the mobile phone of accused Kunal Tiwari and confirmed that the knives were ordered from Flipkart using his registered mobile number. Both accused confessed to using the knife delivered online for the violent robbery, which escalated into murder, he said. What makes the case graver is that Raipur Police had earlier issued written instructions to e-commerce companies including Flipkart and Amazon, warning them against delivering dangerous weapons like knives. Despite these directives, the companies continued to allow such deliveries, prompting police to now initiate criminal proceedings under BNS Section 125(B), 3(5) and relevant Arms Act provisions. Taking serious note of the violation, police have arrested six individuals linked to Flipkart and Elastic Run Courier. These include managers, delivery handlers, and logistical coordinators who allegedly ignored the warnings and facilitated the delivery of the knife. Raipur SSP Lal Umed Singh ordered swift action, directing multiple units including the Anti-Crime & Cyber Unit and Mandir Hasaud Police to investigate all individuals involved in the delivery chain. Additional SP Vivek Shukla, who is leading the probe, said the arrests followed detailed electronic and forensic analysis and would continue as the investigation progresses. Police said further arrests may be made as they probe deeper into the operational roles of other company officials responsible for violating standing orders regarding weapon sales.
