Horsham steward praises volunteers after club's title win
Dave Ward, 50, has been volunteering in the role for three years and watched on in delight as Dominic Di Paola's side beat Hashtag United 5-1 to claim The Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division title for the first time in their history, pipping Billericay on goal difference by a solitary strike.
The result means the Hornets will take their place in the National League South next season after Lucas Rodrigues' brace and goals from Ola Ogunwamide, Harvey Sparks and Jake Elliott were enough to top the division, despite Billericay's 4-2 win over Cheshunt.
Ward said: 'It was one of those worthwhile moments where everything came together, it was a fantastic day for the club and it was great to be there.
'I do not think any of us actually thought we were going to do it because we all thought Billericay were going to win quite comfortably.
'There were murmurs in the crowd they were 2-0 down and then at the end of the game when we found out [Billericay had not scored enough], people began to cheer in the crowd and then everyone went absolutely mad.
'It was a complete joy for the club, and it was an unbelievable moment.
Ward, who moved to Horsham five years ago and works in the club's carpark, also praised the incredible impact of the club's army of volunteers.
He explained that since his time at the club, he has seen the number of volunteers working with him grow from two to five, while crowds have risen from approximately 600 to being routinely four figures.
'I think the people who give up their time to be here are incredible,' continued Ward, whose day job is as a driver.
'I did not realise when I first started how much people put in, week in, week out, it really is a labour of love.
'The club would not be able to afford to pay offsite people to do what we do.
'We all do it for the love of the club, the friendships and the family feel. It is fantastic what everyone does.
'I would not want to be paid to do what I do if I am being honest. The club brings the whole town together and the celebrations last Saturday showed that.'

Calum Ward is looking to put a smile on supporters' faces Calum Ward hopes Motherwell can put a smile on fans' faces by knocking St Johnstone out of the Premier Sports Cup. Motherwell will head to McDiarmid Park in Perth as favourites in the last-16 clash, but Ward is conscious that they haven't won a league game yet. However, the English keeper is confident that the Steelmen will progress in the competition, kick-starting their campaign. He said: 'St Johnstone have started the season really strongly, six points out of six. 'They'll probably do really well in that league. We know it's going to be a tough place, but we're confident in ourselves that we can go and play the football we do and try and beat them next week. 'You really want to do really well in the Cups. It's another good chance to keep the fans happy. Going on a cup run is really important for the club and we'll try and do our best next week.' Ward, 24, was called into action to save from Alex Gogic as Motherwell battled out a 0-0 draw with St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday, while at the other end, Shamal George saved smartly from Ibrahim Said and Callum Slattery. The Essex-born shot-stopper said: 'Possibly it was a fair result, but I feel like we could have taken all three. 'We played some really good stuff in the first half and some really good stuff in the second. 'We just lacked that cutting edge at the end. We always knew it was going to be tough coming here. We said at half-time, if we can't get the goal and get the win, we'll take the point.' On his second-half save, Ward said: 'I had to judge that he's going to win that ball, and just drop off and then flicked it on and just did my job. It had to be a strong hand because I had to get it over the bar. I was happy with it. 'We knew that they put crosses in the box, corners, and they caused us problems in the first half and second, and then that ball was coming, it was windy, it was tough.' Having drawn 1-1 at home to Rangers Motherwell have two points so far, but Ward is content with that, from difficult games. He said: 'It's better than two losses, for sure. We obviously want to win games like everyone, but if we can't get the three points, we'll take the draw, especially at a place like this. 'Obviously we were confident in ourselves last week going into the game, but we obviously take the point. 'We could have won the game easily at the end. And chances we had, we just lacked that little bit of finishing touch. 'And if we had that, we would have clearly had six points out of six, but we'll take the two.' Ward came through the youth set-up at AFC Bournemouth and was sent out on loan for a few spells before landing permanently at HIFK in Finland, and from there he moved to AC Oulu, and Motherwell. Having signed a contract extension at the start of this season, Ward is happy in Lanarkshire. He said: 'I got the chance to start the season, play a few pre-season games to get used to how the manager wants me to play and the team to play. 'So I'm happy with how we've played so far, yeah. 'It wasn't the greatest start getting lobbed in the Premier Sports Cup [against Clyde], but then we just worked on it. We played well in the game. We just implemented that style of play that we want to do. 'It has been good. I've enjoyed taking my chance and just trying to continue to do that. 'In the first half and a lot of the game last week, it looks really good when it works. Obviously, we're going to make mistakes but the manager said that to us and we're getting that on board. 'We know that mistakes will happen, but we'll keep doing the right things and keep being brave. When it is successful, it looks really good.'

Liverpool have been linked with a summer swoop for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and a former Eagles star reckons his old team-mate would be a shrewd signing for the Reds Joel Ward says his former Crystal Palace team-mate, Marc Guehi, would be the perfect fit for Liverpool amid fresh reports linking the England defender with a move to Anfield. Guehi, 25, is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and his future remains uncertain. Palace value the former Chelsea man at around £45million given his contract status and risk losing him for free next summer if they do not sell before the transfer window shuts. Liverpool have spent just shy of £300m this summer and are now understood to be keen on adding a centre-back to their ranks before the transfer deadline next month. Guehi is a player Liverpool have been keen on for the last year with his contract in south London running down. And Ward, who played alongside Guehi for years at Palace before leaving earlier this summer, reckons it's a no-brainer for Liverpool to pursue a deal for his old team-mate. 'You look at the player makeups that Liverpool have, they need someone who's mobile and agile, and Marc fits everything they would need, whether it's now or further down the line,' Ward told TNT Sports. 'Whoever gets him will be lucky to have Marc. He's a top player, top guy, he's a leader, so he offers you more than just the footballing side of things, he offers you so much more than that. 'He's got his eyes set high, and the sky's the limit for him. He's an unbelievable guy and an unbelievable player.' Liverpool have just three recognised senior centre-backs on their books in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, though Gomez is currently injured. Sunday's Community Shield showdown with Crystal Palace - which Ward was speaking ahead of - gave the Reds a chance to get an up close look at Guehi in action. The match finished 2-2 after Palace plundered a late equaliser through Ismaila Sarr after goals from Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong had nudged Liverpool into a 2-1 lead.
