Indonesia foils attempt to smuggle 1,200 endangered birds

environment and forestry ministry

Officials found the huge cache of birds in eight cages on Friday, including 140 that died, at a port on Flores island in eastern
Indonesia
, Joko Waluyo, an official at a provincial conservation agency, told reporters Sunday.
The birds were due to be taken by ferry to Surabaya, a city in the east of Indonesia's main island Java.

"The alleged perpetrator, who has not yet been found, brought Javan white-eye birds in 8 bird cages. The number of birds that were attempted to be transported was 1,260, 140 of which were found dead," said Joko.
The surviving white-eye birds were released back into the wild.
"The release aims to save all secured (birds), increase the population in nature, and raise public awareness," he said.
Under Indonesian law, poaching or trading of protected species is punishable up to 15 years in prison.
Indonesia's illegal trade in wildlife along with habitat loss has driven numerous
endangered species
, from the Sumatran elephant to the orangutan, to the brink of extinction.

Agra: Six people, including five members of a Delhi-based family, were killed and at least 20 were injured, some critically, in two separate road crashes -- one involving a car and the other a bus, within a span of 30 minutes and a few kilometres apart -- on the busy Yamuna Expressway in Mathura early on Saturday. In both incidents, police said prima facie, it seemed that the drivers dozed off at the wheel. I n the first incident, a car with eight people travelling from Delhi to Agra collided with a heavy vehicle, possibly a truck, near milestone 140 close to Sarai Salwan around 3:30am, leaving six occupants dead on the spot. Two women were critically injured, police said, adding the impact left the vehicle completely mangled. Gang involved in rigging govt recruitment exams busted in Patna, 2 held
Patna: With the arrest of two people, a gang involved in manipulating govt recruitment exams for money was busted in Patna on Saturday. Police arrested both men from a flat during a raid in an apartment under the Ramakrishna Nagar police station area of the city. They also seized various documents and roll numbers of 45 candidates, who appeared in the state's constable recruitment exam, as well as electronic gadgets from their room. Those arrested have been identified as Prem Prakash Patel (32) from Nalanda district and Subodh Kumar Yadav (22) from Jamui district. City SP (East) Parichay Kumar said that during interrogation, the arrested men revealed that they work for someone and collect money from the aspiring candidates only on commission. "Among the items seized include three walkie-talkies, several cellphones, including two iPhones; a laptop, many certificates, some blank cheques, and two bikes. Prem claimed to have completed engineering from NSIT Bihta," the SP said.
